Then compare the exact PS5 and Xbox Series X versions sold in your market, including disc drives, current prices, subscription plans and any storage you expect to need. Neither console is universally cheaper or better for every player.
Start with the games you most want to play
Make a short list of games you expect to play—not just games that might interest you someday—and check each title’s current platform availability, edition and any subscription requirements. A game being included in a service can change, and a title’s availability may differ by region or plan.
Then consider the people you play with. If your friends already use one platform, that may affect where you want to buy multiplayer games and subscriptions. Check each game’s cross-play support rather than assuming players on PS5 and Xbox can play together.
Can you keep playing games you already own?
Xbox Series X
Xbox says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations, including most Xbox One games. Compatibility is title-specific: consult the Xbox backward-compatible games list for supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. For supported disc-based games, keep the disc; features can also vary by game. Xbox describes Series X on its official product page.

PS5
PlayStation says digital PS4 games are available from your account library on PS5 after you sign in. Check individual titles and editions before buying or assuming a particular version will work. PlayStation also describes PS4-to-PS5 account continuity and PS Plus cloud saves on its PlayStation ecosystem page.
For either console, compare the games you already own in the format you own them. A digital purchase and a disc collection do not necessarily carry over in the same way, and compatibility for one game does not establish compatibility for every game in its series.

Compare the exact console configuration and local price
Do not compare a headline price for one model against a different configuration. Confirm storage capacity and whether the console includes a disc drive, then compare current local retailer listings for the specific PS5 and Series X models you are considering.
Xbox announced on June 25, 2026, that worldwide console prices would rise effective August 1, 2026: US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. It also said the 2 TB model would be sunset. Those announced changes are not a live price comparison between PS5 and Xbox, and they do not establish what a retailer currently charges in your market. Check the current listing for each configuration before deciding. In its announcement, Xbox attributed the changes to higher costs, saying console storage and memory prices had increased by more than 2.5 times. Hardware features can affect the comparison as much as the sticker price. Xbox identifies native 4K output and a UHD Blu-ray disc player as Series X features. Check which PS5 model is being sold and whether it has a disc drive; do not assume every PS5 configuration handles discs. If you buy physical games or watch Blu-ray films, include that use in the decision. If you buy digitally, a disc drive may be less important.
Work out the subscription cost you will actually use
A subscription is an ongoing cost, so compare the features and games your household expects to use—not just the biggest catalog or the most expensive tier. Both services can change, and availability may vary by region, plan and platform.

Factor in discs and storage
If you have a physical game collection, expect to buy used discs, or want a console disc player, verify that the model you are pricing has a drive. For Series X, Xbox lists a UHD Blu-ray disc player. For PS5, check the drive configuration of the exact model and bundle rather than relying on the PS5 name alone.
Storage expansion is optional. Xbox says its dedicated Storage Expansion Card adds space while replicating the custom SSD experience. Before adding one to your budget, check compatibility and current local cost; do not assume you need an expansion card at purchase. You may be able to start with the console’s included storage and decide later based on how many games you keep installed.
