You’ll need a supported model, a compatible controller, a reliable internet connection and, for most games, an eligible Game Pass plan. Some supported free-to-play games are exceptions.
How Xbox cloud gaming works on a TV
The game runs on Xbox’s cloud servers and streams to your TV over the internet. Your controller inputs travel back to the service, so you can play without a console connected to the television. That also means performance depends on your connection, location and device, and streamed play may not match playing locally on a console.
Xbox documents possible limitations in video resolution, audio output, save storage, companion-app support, and accessories or peripherals. Cloud saves are used; don’t assume every console feature or accessory will work while streaming. Xbox’s TV page lists the service requirements and limitations.
Which TVs and streaming devices are supported?
Support is limited to select models. A brand name or a TV’s release year alone does not confirm compatibility. Xbox’s US support page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists these categories:

If your TV isn’t listed, one of the specified Fire TV devices may provide another route, provided your TV has a compatible HDMI input.

A compatible TV or streaming device
First check the exact model and operating system, not just the manufacturer or year. App availability and the supported-device list can change, and support may differ by market.

A compatible controller
Xbox Cloud Gaming requires a controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox’s TV FAQ names Xbox and PlayStation controllers among the options, along with others; verify your specific model against Xbox’s controller compatibility information before relying on it.
Internet access
Xbox recommends a high-speed connection. Its TV guidance specifies 20 Mbps down for consoles, PCs and tablets and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data; it also highlights wired internet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for TV play. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth streaming: connection quality, location and device all matter. Check Xbox’s current network guidance for the TV setup.

A plan or an eligible free-to-play game
Most games available through the Xbox app on TVs require an active Game Pass subscription and a supported game. Xbox’s broader cloud-gaming FAQ names Ultimate, Premium or Essential for access to hundreds of games, while noting that selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. The game catalog and eligibility vary by plan, region, platform and time, so check the live catalog and plan terms for the title you want rather than assuming it’s included. See the Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ.
Set up Xbox cloud gaming on your TV
- Check your device: Find the TV’s exact model and operating system version, then compare them with Xbox’s supported TV information. For Samsung, check Samsung Gaming Hub’s device list; for VIDAA, consult VIDAA support. If native TV support isn’t available, check whether one of the listed Fire TV generations fits your television.
- Confirm regional and game availability: Check that Xbox Cloud Gaming is offered in your region and that the specific game is playable through the cloud on your device and plan.
- Check what the game requires: Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan; confirm whether your chosen title is included or is one of the selected free-to-play exceptions.
- Connect your controller: Pair a verified compatible controller over Bluetooth or plug it in by USB.
- Optimize the connection: Use wired internet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available, and compare your connection with Xbox’s published guidance. If play is unstable, connection, location and device can all contribute.
TV app or Fire TV device: how to choose
Native TV support avoids adding a streaming device, but only if your exact TV is on the compatible list and the app is available in your market. A listed Fire TV device can be an alternative for an unsupported TV with an HDMI input, but it adds a separate device to buy and set up. Xbox’s published information establishes compatibility categories, not current device prices or a quality ranking.
