Choose the built-in PS5 storage if you want to spend nothing and can manage space by deleting or moving games. Choose a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD if you want additional storage from which PS5 games can be downloaded, updated, and played. Choose a USB extended-storage drive if your priority is archiving PS5 games for later transfer or playing PS4 games directly from the drive. The key distinction is that PS5 games stored on USB extended storage cannot be played there; they must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD first.
That is the practical answer to “Should I get an M.2 SSD or an external hard drive for my PS5?” Decide whether added games need to be ready to play immediately, whether they are mostly an archive, or whether you need to run PS4 games without using internal space. Then check the exact compatibility requirements before buying either type of drive.

The three PS5 storage choices at a glance
Your PS5 uses its built-in storage for games, saved data, and other content by default. You can add capacity in two fundamentally different ways: an M.2 SSD installed inside the console, or a USB drive formatted as extended storage. They solve different problems, so capacity alone should not determine the purchase.
| Option | What it can do | What it cannot do | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in console storage | Stores and runs PS5 and PS4 games, saved data, and apps without extra hardware. | Its available space is fixed; when it fills, you must delete or move content. | Players who want the simplest, no-cost solution. |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Stores, downloads, updates, and launches PS5 and PS4 games; also stores media apps. | Requires a correctly sized, cooled, compatible drive and physical installation. Third-party compatibility is not guaranteed. | Players who want more space with PS5 games ready to play. |
| USB extended storage | Runs PS4 games directly; stores PS5 games for later transfer; can hold moved content. | PS5 games on the USB drive cannot launch until copied to internal or M.2 storage. | Players who archive PS5 games or play a PS4 library from external storage. |
Games can be moved between the built-in storage, an installed M.2 drive, and USB extended storage. That makes USB useful even when it cannot provide direct PS5 gameplay: it can hold a large game until you are ready to move it back.

When the built-in storage is the right choice
The internal drive is the baseline because it costs nothing, needs no installation, and has no compatibility checklist. If you are comfortable rotating games, start here. Deleting an installed game does not remove your purchase; PlayStation’s storage guidance says a deleted purchase can be downloaded again from your game library.
Use deletion when you will not play a game soon
Delete a finished or inactive game when you need room for a new download. Keep saved data separately according to your normal backup routine, and remember that reinstalling a game later may require another download and any applicable updates.
Move games when you want to preserve a local copy
Moving a game to USB extended storage preserves the installation files without consuming internal space. For a PS5 game, this is an archive workflow rather than a play workflow: move it back before launching. A game moved to an M.2 SSD remains directly playable from that M.2 drive.

- Players with a small installed library who rarely run out of space.
- Players who are happy to redownload games from the library.
- Anyone who does not want to open the console or manage an external drive.
Why an M.2 SSD is the expansion choice for direct PS5 play
An M.2 SSD is the add-on option when you want PS5 games available from added storage without copying them back every time. Once installed and formatted, it can hold, download, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. PlayStation’s 2021 expansion announcement describes the same capabilities: M.2 storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media apps.
Current M.2 requirements from PlayStation Support
The following limits come from the current US PlayStation Support guide. A drive must satisfy the interface, capacity, dimensions, and cooling requirements together; matching only the advertised read speed is not enough.

| Specification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe |
| Keying | M Key |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Supported form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110 |
| Maximum width | 25 mm |
| Supported lengths | 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm |
| Maximum total thickness, including cooling structure | 11.25 mm total, with up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it |
| Recommended sequential read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster |
| Cooling | Effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required |
M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. A drive with a built-in heatsink should not receive another heatsink, because the additional material can exceed the console’s clearance limits. Measure the complete assembly, not just the bare SSD.
Why matching the specification still does not guarantee compatibility
PlayStation explicitly says it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed characteristics. It also notes that some games may not perform exactly as they do on the internal SSD, even when an M.2 drive exceeds the recommended sequential read speed. Treat the table as a required screening checklist, not as a promise that every qualifying product will behave identically.

What an M.2 installation involves
Installation is more involved than plugging in USB storage. PlayStation’s guide calls for a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and tells you to follow the instructions for your specific PS5 model. The drive must be formatted the first time it is used, and formatting erases data already on that SSD.
- Prepare the drive. Use an empty M.2 SSD or copy anything important elsewhere. Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, M Key, capacity, form factor, length, width, thickness, and cooling dimensions before opening the console.
- Shut down and prepare the console. Follow the model-specific PlayStation installation instructions. Do not power on or play with the console cover removed.
- Install the M.2 SSD. Use the recommended #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and secure the drive and its spacer or retaining hardware as directed for your model. Do not improvise a thicker cooling assembly.
- Close the console and start it normally. On first use, the PS5 will require the M.2 drive to be formatted.
- Format only after checking the contents. Formatting permanently erases existing data on that M.2 SSD. Once complete, choose the M.2 storage location when downloading or moving games.
If the drive is not detected, turn the console off and recheck seating, the retaining screw or spacer position, the heatsink dimensions, and whether the SSD is actually PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe rather than SATA. Do not assume that a drive’s M.2 connector alone proves compatibility.
When USB extended storage is the better expansion
USB extended storage is a separate workflow from an installed M.2 SSD. It is appropriate when you want a large local archive, want to play PS4 games directly from the drive, or do not want to open the console. It is not the right choice if your main requirement is launching PS5 games from the added drive.

USB requirements
PlayStation requires a commercially available compatible USB drive using SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later, with capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Not every device is guaranteed to work. The drive must connect directly to the PS5 rather than through a USB hub, and only one USB extended-storage drive can be used at a time.
| USB question | Required answer |
|---|---|
| USB speed | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Connection | Direct connection; USB hubs are unsupported |
| Simultaneous extended-storage drives | One at a time |
| Formatting | Required for first use and erases data already on the drive |
What you can play from USB
- PS4 games: You can install and play compatible PS4 games directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: You can move them to USB to free internal or M.2 space, but you must copy each game back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing.
This makes a USB drive useful as a “cold” or “warm” library: games are local and do not need to be redownloaded, but PS5 titles are not immediately launchable while they remain on USB.
Set up and disconnect USB storage safely
- Choose a qualifying drive. Verify the 5 Gbps-or-faster SuperSpeed requirement and the 250 GB-to-8 TB capacity range. Avoid relying on an unverified hub or adapter chain.
- Connect it directly to the PS5. Use a direct console connection and wait for the system to recognize the drive.
- Format it as USB extended storage. Formatting erases everything already on the drive, so back up or empty it first.
- Move or install content. Set the appropriate storage location in the PS5 storage controls, or move selected games between storage devices.
- Eject before unplugging. Use the PS5’s safe-disconnect control before removing the cable. Unplugging during activity can cause data loss or corruption.
M.2 SSD versus USB drive: the decision that matters
| Reader priority | Best fit | Trade-off to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid buying or installing anything | Built-in console storage | Available space is the constraint; delete or move games as needed. |
| Play PS5 games from added storage | Compatible internal M.2 SSD | Check interface, dimensions, cooling, and fit; third-party compatibility is not guaranteed. |
| Keep PS5 games archived for later | USB extended storage | Copy each archived PS5 game back before playing. |
| Play PS4 games without using console storage | USB extended storage | The drive must meet the qualifying USB requirements and be connected directly. |
| Minimize installation work | USB extended storage | It does not provide direct PS5 gameplay. |
| Keep a frequently played PS5 library ready | M.2 SSD | Physical installation and formatting are required. |
Choose M.2 if your bottleneck is launching PS5 games
If you regularly alternate among large PS5 titles, an M.2 SSD removes the copy-back step. Games can be downloaded or moved to that drive and launched there. Verify every physical measurement, including the heatsink, before purchase.
Choose USB if your bottleneck is keeping games locally
If your concern is redownloading a large PS5 game, USB extended storage keeps a local copy while freeing faster play storage. Plan for the transfer time when you decide to return to that game. USB is also the direct-play solution for compatible PS4 games.
Keep both when your library has two different jobs
A practical mixed setup is built-in storage or M.2 for games currently in rotation, plus USB for PS5 titles you want to retain and PS4 games you play less often. The console supports moving games among the three storage locations, so you can assign each device a role rather than treating them as interchangeable.

How to organize games after adding storage
Keep active PS5 games on internal or M.2 storage
Use internal or M.2 space for games you expect to launch soon, because both support direct PS5 gameplay. If the internal drive becomes crowded, move the least active PS5 titles to USB rather than deleting them.
Use USB as an archive, not a performance promise
USB extended storage preserves installed PS5 game data, but it does not turn the USB drive into a PS5 play location. Copy the game back before starting it. The official guidance does not establish a universal transfer time, so the duration will depend on the game and hardware rather than a guaranteed figure.
Keep PS4 games on USB when convenient
Compatible PS4 games can remain on USB and run there, leaving internal or M.2 capacity for PS5 titles. If a particular title behaves differently, check its compatibility and the console’s current storage instructions rather than assuming every PS4 release has identical requirements.
Move instead of reinstalling when you need temporary space
Moving content between recognized storage devices preserves the local installation. Deleting and redownloading is simpler but requires another download. Choose the operation based on whether you value immediate free space or avoiding a future download.

Formatting, data safety, and common mistakes
Formatting is destructive
Formatting an M.2 SSD or USB drive as PS5 storage erases data already on that device. Back up anything important or use a blank drive before confirming the format. Do not treat a newly purchased drive as safe until you have checked whether it contains files you need.

Do not buy by capacity alone
An M.2 drive can have an attractive capacity and still fail the PS5 checklist because it is SATA, uses the wrong PCIe generation, exceeds the width or thickness limit, lacks effective cooling, or has an unsupported physical length. USB storage also has a defined speed and capacity range; a generic external drive is not automatically qualifying extended storage.
Do not stack heatsinks
If an M.2 SSD already includes a built-in heatsink, adding another one can exceed the permitted thickness. Measure the complete cooling structure and follow the console’s clearance limits.
Do not route USB storage through a hub
PlayStation’s USB guidance requires a direct connection and says hubs are unsupported. If the drive is not recognized, remove the hub or adapter from the chain before investigating the drive itself.
Do not unplug an active USB drive
Use the PS5 safe-disconnect command before removing USB extended storage. An unsafe removal can lead to data loss or corruption, especially while a game is moving or updating.
Do not expect every qualifying M.2 to behave identically
PlayStation does not guarantee all third-party M.2 drives, and some games may not perform exactly like they do on the internal SSD even when the drive exceeds the recommended 5,500 MB/s sequential-read speed. Keep that limitation in mind when deciding whether the extra installation effort is worthwhile.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The PS5 does not detect the M.2 SSD
- Confirm that the SSD is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe with M Key, not M.2 SATA.
- Check the supported length, width, and total thickness including the heatsink.
- Power the console down and reseat the drive according to the instructions for your PS5 model.
- Check the spacer, retaining screw, and cooling structure.
- Do not operate the console with its cover removed.
The USB drive is not recognized
- Confirm SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Connect the drive directly instead of through a USB hub.
- Check that another USB extended-storage drive is not already being used; only one can be active at a time.
- Remember that first-use formatting erases the drive’s existing data.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
That is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Copy the game from USB extended storage to the built-in console storage or installed M.2 storage, then launch it from that location.
A game disappeared after deletion
Deleting the installed copy removes local game data, not your purchase entitlement. PlayStation says purchased games can be downloaded again from the game library, subject to the account and platform conditions that normally govern your library.

Before buying an M.2 SSD
- Is it PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe and M Key?
- Is capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB?
- Is its form factor one of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110?
- Is its length 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm and its width no more than 25 mm?
- Is total thickness, including cooling, no more than 11.25 mm, with no more than 8.0 mm above and 2.45 mm below the board?
- Does it provide effective heat dissipation?
- Is sequential read speed at least the recommended 5,500 MB/s?
- Does the seller avoid claiming guaranteed PS5 compatibility that PlayStation itself does not guarantee?
Before buying a USB extended-storage drive
- Does it support SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later?
- Is capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB?
- Can you connect it directly to the console without a hub?
- Are you prepared to format it and erase existing data?
- Do you understand that PS5 games must be copied back before play?
Before choosing no added drive
- Are you comfortable deleting games and downloading them again later?
- Would moving inactive games to USB solve your space problem?
- Do you mostly play PS4 games that could run from USB?
Bottom line: match the drive to the way you play
Built-in storage is the simplest starting point. An M.2 SSD is the correct expansion when added PS5 capacity must remain directly playable, provided the drive and cooling assembly meet every PlayStation requirement. USB extended storage is the better archive and PS4-play solution, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back before launch. If your library needs both an active PS5 tier and a larger local archive, use M.2 or internal storage for current games and USB for the rest.
