What do you get in Sonic X Shadow Generations?
SEGA released SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS on October 25, 2024, as a one-player high-speed action adventure. It combines two campaigns rather than simply adding a Shadow character to the older game. SEGA described it as “two unique high-speed adventures in one incredible collection!” in its release announcement.

The remastered Sonic campaign
SONIC GENERATIONS returns as a complete remaster, bringing Classic and Modern Sonic together across 2D and 3D stages. SEGA lists upgraded visuals and bonus content, including hidden Chao to rescue and Casino Nights pinball. This is the familiar part of the package for players who know the earlier game; it is not a wholly new Sonic campaign. See SEGA’s game overview for the campaign description.
The new Shadow campaign
SHADOW GENERATIONS is a distinct, new campaign. Shadow confronts Black Doom, visits stages tied to his history, and explores an expansive hub. His Doom Powers support combat, water traversal, and platforming challenges. Its protagonist, abilities, and hub structure make it a different experience from the Classic and Modern Sonic stages.

Which Sonic game is right for you?
There is no universal best Sonic game: choose by the campaign and style you want, not by assuming this collection replaces every other entry.

Is it worth buying if you already own Sonic Generations?
That depends on the value you place on the new Shadow campaign and the package’s additions. The Sonic portion is a remaster of SONIC GENERATIONS, so returning players should not count that campaign as entirely new. The separate Shadow adventure is the main reason to consider the collection for its new story and gameplay. SEGA announced that the game had sold more than two million units worldwide on January 24, 2025; that publisher-reported milestone counts physical and downloaded copies across platforms and is not a current sales total.

Check platform and format before buying
SEGA’s launch product information lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The Xbox and PC versions are listed as digital-only. Confirm current support, local availability, and whether a listing is physical or digital before you buy, since platform and stock can vary by market.
Nintendo Switch 2 physical edition
SEGA says the Switch 2 physical edition uses a game-key card, not a card containing the complete installed game. Playing for the first time requires broadband internet and a 24 GB download; updates and other content may need additional space. Check SEGA’s Switch 2 announcement and the local listing if storage or offline access matters to you.

Standard, Digital Deluxe, or Collector’s Edition?
Choose an edition for the extras you will actually use or want to own. A higher tier’s contents do not, by themselves, establish better value; prices and availability depend on platform and region.

SEGA’s April 3, 2025 Switch 2 announcement also describes the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack, which adds movie-inspired Tokyo stages and a movie Shadow skin. The pack requires the base game and is described as included in Digital Deluxe or available through a Digital Deluxe upgrade. Treat this as platform- and edition-specific; verify the current store page for the version you plan to buy.
