The right handheld for upscaling depends on the games you play, the image quality you accept and whether you normally play on battery or at a wall outlet. Steam Deck OLED targets 1280 × 800 gaming with a 4–15 W APU and SteamOS, while the 2024 ROG Ally X targets 1920 × 1080 at up to 120 Hz and includes Windows plus AMD upscaling and frame-generation options. Neither specification proves a universal performance winner. Choose by testing your own games at matched render resolutions, graphics settings, power modes and software versions.
Start with the screen and the power setting
Upscaling lowers the resolution at which a game is rendered, then reconstructs an image for the display. That can reduce GPU work, but the benefit depends on the game, the chosen quality preset, the graphics settings and the handheld’s power limit. A 1080p handheld and an 800p handheld are not aiming at the same native pixel count, so comparing their frame rates without recording render resolution is misleading.

Valve lists Steam Deck OLED with a 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display, up to 90 Hz, a 50 Wh battery and an AMD APU configurable from 4 to 15 W. Valve’s stated battery life is 3–12 hours depending on content, so it is a manufacturer estimate rather than a fixed runtime. See the Steam Deck OLED technical specifications.
ASUS lists the 2024 ROG Ally X (model RC72LA) with a 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz display. Its published game examples use Turbo mode while connected to AC power at 30 W, with a particular BIOS, driver and software configuration. That is a plugged-in test condition, not an equivalent to Steam Deck running from a battery-limited 4–15 W setting. The complete model page is ROG Ally X (2024).

What the documented models actually provide
| Model or feature | Documented specification or capability | What it means for an upscaling decision |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | 6 nm AMD APU; Zen 2, 4-core/8-thread CPU; 8 RDNA 2 compute units; 4–15 W APU; 16 GB LPDDR5; 1280 × 800 HDR OLED up to 90 Hz; 50 Wh battery; Valve-stated 3–12 hours; SteamOS 3. | The lower native target can require fewer rendered pixels than 1080p. Its low-power range and SteamOS workflow are central to the experience, but actual frame rate remains game- and setting-dependent. |
| ROG Ally X (2024, RC72LA) | AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme with RDNA 3 graphics; 24 GB memory; 1 TB storage; Windows 11; 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz display. ASUS advertises Radeon Super Resolution and AMD Fluid Motion Frames. Published examples identify Turbo, AC-connected 30 W testing. | The 1080p panel is sharper at native output but asks for more pixels. Higher-power plugged-in results cannot be treated as battery results or as a matched Steam Deck comparison. |
| Original ROG Ally and Z1 models | ASUS’s 2023 announcement lists FSR and RSR support for both Z1 models and a 1080p, 120 Hz display for the original Ally. | Do not assume the original Ally has the Ally X’s memory, battery capacity or sustained power behavior. Identify the exact Z1 or Z1 Extreme model before comparing settings. |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Windows 11; Ryzen Z2 A; 16 GB LPDDR5-6400; 512 GB SSD; 7-inch 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz VRR display, according to Microsoft’s product page. | This is a newer Xbox-branded model, not another name for the 2024 Ally X. Confirm game support and current firmware rather than transferring older Ally results. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Windows 11; Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme; 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000; 1 TB SSD; 7-inch 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz VRR display, according to Microsoft. | The X suffix and Xbox branding do not establish the same performance as an Ally X (2024). Treat it as a separate generation and model. |
The Xbox-branded specifications are listed by Microsoft on ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally. Availability, firmware and supported feature lists can change, so record the model year when you shop or test.
Upscaling, frame generation and native rendering are different
Game-integrated FSR
AMD’s guidance describes FSR as a setting exposed by a supported game. In AMD’s words, you can launch a game, turn on the supported FSR version in its in-game graphics or video options and select an FSR quality preset in that same menu. Read the current guidance at AMD FSR Technologies.
This means FSR is not a switch that works identically across every title. One game may offer several presets and a render-scale control; another may offer no FSR at all or an older implementation. A lower internal resolution can improve performance, but reconstruction can soften fine text, foliage, distant geometry or moving objects. Judge the result at the handheld’s actual viewing distance, not only from a paused screenshot.

Radeon Super Resolution
ASUS advertises Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) as an Ally X capability and its published examples identify gameplay at 720p with RSR in selected titles. RSR is a driver-level option rather than the same thing as a game’s integrated FSR implementation. The game, display mode and driver behavior determine whether it engages as intended, so verify the exact resolution and fullscreen or windowed mode used in each title before drawing a conclusion.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames
AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is frame generation. It creates additional interpolated frames between rendered frames; it does not lower the game’s internal render resolution by itself. A counter can therefore show more displayed frames without the same increase in input sampling or simulation updates. Generated frames may make camera motion look smoother, but they can also change latency and produce artifacts during rapid movement, interface transitions or scene changes. Keep AFMF off when measuring native rendering performance, then evaluate it separately if the game and driver support it.
A practical decision method
Use the following process instead of choosing from a feature name or a single vendor chart.
- List three to five games you genuinely play. Include at least one demanding title and one game where text clarity or competitive responsiveness matters. Upscaling support is title-specific, so a device that suits one game may not suit another.
- Set a display target for each handheld. For Steam Deck OLED, start at 1280 × 800 or a lower 16:10-compatible output. For a 1080p Ally model, decide whether you want native 1920 × 1080 output or a lower output such as 1280 × 720 with an upscaler. Do not compare a 720p render on one device with a native 1080p render on another and call the resulting frame rates equivalent.
- Choose the game’s graphics preset first. Record the preset, texture quality, shadows, ray tracing and any resolution scale. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to know whether an upscaler or a preset change produced the result.
- Record the upscaling method and quality preset. Write down whether the game uses integrated FSR, another in-game scaler, driver-level RSR or no upscaling. Preserve the exact preset name, because “Quality,” “Balanced” and “Performance” do not render at the same internal resolution in every game.
- Record frame generation separately. Mark AFMF or any in-game frame-generation option as on or off. Never place generated frames in the same column as a native-rendering result.
- Fix the power and electrical state. Note the handheld’s wattage or performance mode and whether it is plugged in. Steam Deck’s documented APU range is 4–15 W; ASUS’s cited Ally X examples use Turbo at 30 W on AC power. Those are different operating conditions, not a controlled head-to-head test.
- Keep software versions visible. Record SteamOS or Windows build, BIOS, graphics driver and game version. ASUS cautions that results can vary with configuration and newer drivers, so a result without versions is difficult to reproduce.
- Use a repeatable scene. Test the same save, route, camera movement or built-in benchmark for each setting. Capture average frame rate together with frame-time consistency, image quality and control feel.
How to interpret the results
Frame rate is only one measurement
A higher average can hide uneven frame pacing. Look for stutter when entering a new area, traversal hitching, shader compilation and sudden drops during combat. If frame generation is enabled, inspect the base rendering rate and input response as well as the displayed counter.
Image quality changes with the content
Upscaling artifacts are most visible around thin wires, foliage, hair, text and particles. Compare a moving scene, a dialogue or inventory screen and a distant landscape. On Steam Deck OLED, a 1280 × 800 output can make a moderate internal reduction less conspicuous than the same reduction expanded to a 1080p panel, but this is a viewing judgment rather than a guaranteed quality advantage.

Battery and acoustics are part of performance
A setting that is excellent at 30 W while plugged in may drain a handheld quickly or increase fan noise on battery. Valve’s 3–12-hour Steam Deck OLED estimate varies by content; do not treat it as an upscaling benchmark. Similarly, do not infer the Ally X’s AC Turbo behavior from a short battery session.
Which type of player fits each model?
Steam Deck OLED: lower-resolution target and SteamOS simplicity
Steam Deck OLED is a sensible fit if you value a 1280 × 800 OLED display, a console-like SteamOS interface and the ability to operate across a 4–15 W APU range. Many games can be configured around that lower output target, reducing the number of pixels the GPU must render compared with native 1080p. You still need to check each game’s compatibility, controller behavior and available scaling options. The display’s 90 Hz ceiling does not make a 90-frame-per-second result automatic; the game and chosen settings determine whether the hardware can sustain a given rate.
Its 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and 50 Wh battery are fixed platform characteristics. Valve’s runtime range is expressly content-dependent, so demanding games and higher brightness can produce a different result from light 2D titles. SteamOS may also require more setup for games outside the Steam library than a Windows handheld, depending on the launcher and compatibility layer you need.

The Ally X suits players who need Windows game-library flexibility, want a 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz panel and are willing to tune power modes and drivers. Its 24 GB memory and 1 TB storage are documented hardware figures, while RSR and AFMF are advertised features. Those features expand the options you can test; they do not guarantee that every game will look or feel better with them enabled.

When reading ASUS results, retain the complete context: game, preset, output and render resolution, Turbo mode, AC connection, BIOS, driver and software versions. A 30 W plugged-in result should not be used to promise the same frame rate in a lower-power handheld mode.
Original ROG Ally: similar display concept, different hardware context
The original Ally’s 1080p, 120 Hz display and advertised FSR/RSR support make it a natural comparison point, but it is not interchangeable with the Ally X. Memory, battery and sustained power behavior can differ by model. Confirm whether a listing is the Z1 or Z1 Extreme version and document its exact settings before using it in a comparison.
ROG Xbox Ally models: newer names require careful identification
Microsoft lists two separate products. ROG Xbox Ally has Ryzen Z2 A, 16 GB LPDDR5-6400 and 512 GB storage; ROG Xbox Ally X has Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 and 1 TB storage. Both are listed with 7-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz VRR displays. These specifications make them current alternatives to investigate, but they do not supply a matched Steam Deck or 2024 Ally X benchmark. Use the full product name and year in any buying decision.
Setting up a fair upscaling comparison
Baseline without upscaling
Begin with the chosen output resolution and the game’s native internal resolution, with frame generation disabled. Record the frame rate, frame-time graph, fan behavior and power mode. This tells you what the hardware can render without reconstruction or generated frames.

Integrated FSR test
Open the game’s graphics or video options, enable its supported FSR version and test each available quality preset one at a time. Keep the output resolution, graphics preset and power mode unchanged. Record the resulting internal resolution if the game exposes it, then inspect text and motion for artifacts.
Driver-level RSR test
If the handheld and driver expose RSR, follow the device’s current instructions and verify that the game is running at the intended lower output, such as the 720p examples ASUS identifies. Do not enable the game’s own FSR at the same time unless you are deliberately testing a combined configuration; otherwise you will not know which scaler is responsible for the image.
Frame-generation test
After choosing the best base-rendering setting, test AFMF or the game’s frame generation as a separate pass. Note the base frame rate, displayed frame rate, camera smoothness, input delay and artifacts. A generated-frame result should be labeled as such in your notes and should never replace the native-rendering baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing different wattages: A 30 W AC Turbo result and a battery-limited 10–15 W result answer different questions. Match the power condition or label the comparison explicitly.
- Comparing different resolutions: Native 1080p, 800p output and a 720p render reconstructed to 1080p are not equivalent workloads or image targets.
- Treating feature support as proof of performance: FSR, RSR and AFMF names establish available options, not a guaranteed frame rate, latency improvement or image-quality result in every title.
- Mixing model generations: Original Ally, Ally X (2024), ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X have different documented hardware. Write the complete model name and year.
- Ignoring frame pacing: Average FPS can look strong while traversal stutter or 1% lows make a game feel poor. Include a repeatable scene and frame-time observations.
- Leaving software unspecified: Driver and BIOS updates can alter behavior. Record versions and retest after major updates.
- Assuming accessories change upscaling: A microSD card, dock, charger or controller can change storage or usability, but it does not by itself improve the GPU’s reconstruction quality or rendering performance.
A buying checklist
- Have you identified the exact games and the settings you are willing to compromise?
- Do you prefer SteamOS simplicity or Windows launcher and compatibility flexibility?
- Is the lower 1280 × 800 target of Steam Deck OLED preferable to a 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz target?
- Will you usually play on battery, or can you use a wall outlet for high-power modes?
- Are you comfortable evaluating image artifacts and latency rather than relying only on a frame counter?
- Have you distinguished integrated FSR, driver-level RSR and frame generation?
- For an Ally or Xbox-branded model, have you confirmed the exact processor, memory, storage and model year?
Verdict
Choose Steam Deck OLED when its 1280 × 800 OLED display, SteamOS workflow and lower-power operating range match your priorities. Choose an Ally-family handheld when Windows access, a 1080p/120 Hz display and additional Radeon options matter more, while accepting that high-power results are often measured plugged in. Consider the newer ROG Xbox Ally models separately rather than assuming their names indicate Ally X performance.
The only reliable way to decide which handheld is better for upscaling is to test your own games under matched conditions: same scene, graphics preset, output and render resolution, upscaler and quality preset, frame-generation state, power mode, electrical state and software versions. The official Valve, ASUS, AMD and Microsoft pages establish specifications and feature availability, but they do not establish one universal Steam Deck-versus-Ally winner.
