Choose the Xbox Game Pass tier around where you play and which benefits you will use: Essential is the basic console option, Premium adds a larger catalog and cloud gaming, Ultimate adds day-one releases and more bundled services, and PC Game Pass is built for PC players. Microsoft’s current US lineup has all four plans, but plan features and game availability vary by region, platform and time.
Compare the four plans at a glance
Microsoft’s current US plan pages list the following library counts and headline differences. The counts are approximate figures shown on undated official pages accessed on October 4, 2026; Microsoft says the catalog changes and varies by plan, region and platform, so check whether the specific games you want are currently included.
| Plan | Best starting fit | What stands out | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Console players seeking a basic library and online multiplayer | 50+ games and online console multiplayer | No new release titles on day one. |
| Premium | Console or multi-device players who want a larger catalog and cloud play | 200+ games; cloud gaming; new Xbox-published games arrive within 12 months of launch | No day-one releases or the bundles listed for Ultimate. |
| Ultimate | Players who value day-one access and multiple included services | 500+ games; day-one releases; EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew; enhanced cloud features | Its higher tier is worthwhile only if you use enough of those benefits; check local pricing. |
| PC Game Pass | PC-first players | 300+ PC games, day-one titles and EA Play | Cloud gaming is not included, according to Microsoft’s FAQ. |
Counts and plan descriptions come from Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass comparison and Xbox Game Pass plan FAQ. They are Microsoft’s displayed figures, not independent counts or a promise that any particular title is included.
Decide whether day-one releases matter
Release timing is one of the clearest differences between plans. Ultimate and PC Game Pass include day-one titles. Premium’s stated benefit is access to new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch, rather than at launch. Essential does not include new releases on day one. If you usually wait to play, Premium may fit better than paying for day-one access; if launch access is a priority, compare Ultimate and PC Game Pass based on your device.

Match the plan to your device
Choose Essential for basic console use
Essential is the entry point if you mainly want a console library and online multiplayer. Microsoft says access to multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player, so that benefit alone may not justify a subscription if you only play free-to-play titles.
Choose Premium for a broader catalog and cloud play
Premium suits console or multi-device players who want a larger listed catalog and cloud gaming but do not need day-one releases. Check the current catalog for your region and platform before subscribing, because a headline count does not mean the same games are available to everyone.

Choose Ultimate when you will use its additions
Ultimate combines day-one access with EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew, alongside enhanced cloud features. Those inclusions are most valuable when you actually want the games or services; do not count a bundle as savings if you would not otherwise use it.
Choose PC Game Pass for PC-first play
PC Game Pass is the straightforward fit for a Windows PC player seeking PC games, day-one titles and EA Play. Microsoft’s FAQ says this plan does not include cloud gaming, so do not choose it on the assumption that cloud access comes with every tier.

Check cloud gaming details before paying
Microsoft’s comparison lists cloud gaming for Essential, Premium and Ultimate, while its FAQ says monthly cloud limits vary by plan and excludes PC Game Pass. The comparison describes Premium as having unlimited cloud gaming and shorter wait times; it describes Ultimate as offering unlimited cloud gaming, the shortest wait times, best streaming quality up to 1440p on supported titles and devices, and streaming for select owned games. Because the official pages do not fully align on cloud limits, verify the current terms for your plan rather than assuming one limit applies everywhere.
- Cloud gaming is available only in supported regions and requires a supported device.
- Check the plan’s current monthly limits and streaming features before subscribing.
- Supported devices are sold separately, and games outside the Game Pass library may need to be purchased separately.
Check the live catalog and local checkout terms
Before choosing, search the live library for the games you expect to play and confirm they are available on your plan, platform and in your region. Catalog membership can change, so a game count is a poor substitute for checking your actual shortlist.

A practical decision checklist
- Start with your device. Pick a console-oriented plan if you play on Xbox; consider PC Game Pass if you mainly play on PC. Confirm supported devices and regional availability for any cloud use.
- Decide on release timing. Choose between day-one access with Ultimate or PC Game Pass, Premium’s within-12-month window for new Xbox-published titles, or Essential without day-one releases.
- Look up games you will actually play. Check the current catalog instead of choosing by the advertised number of games.
- Count only useful extras. Consider EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics or Fortnite Crew only if you intend to use them.
- Verify cloud and renewal terms. Check current cloud limits and local checkout details before subscribing.
