Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S play digital games. Choose Series S if its 1440p design target and storage options fit your screen and library; choose Series X if you want its native-4K positioning, more built-in storage choices, or the option of a disc-drive model. Series X is also available in a 1TB all-digital configuration, so buying digital games does not mean you have to choose Series S.
What matters most when choosing for digital games?
For a digital-only library, compare the console’s resolution target, the exact storage configuration, your likely installed-library size, and the local price. The disc drive matters if you may want physical games or disc playback later, but it is not required for digital play on Series X.
Xbox’s product pages describe Series S as designed for 1440p and able to upscale to 4K, while Series X is positioned for native 4K. These are product-level targets, not guarantees that every game renders at those resolutions. Game output varies by title. Xbox Series S · Xbox Series X

Which console fits your screen?
Choose Series S for a 1440p-focused setup
Series S is the more natural fit if you are content with its 1440p design target and want the option to upscale to a 4K display. Upscaling does not mean every game renders natively at 4K, so check title-specific details if a particular game’s resolution is important to you.
Choose Series X for native-4K positioning
Series X is the better match if native-4K positioning is a priority. Actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game; Xbox’s “up to 120 FPS” capability also requires supported content and a compatible display. Neither figure should be read as a guarantee for every game.

How much storage should you get?
Xbox lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB options, and Series X in 1TB and 2TB options. Availability can vary by market, so compare the capacity on the exact listing rather than relying on the console family name.
If you keep many large games installed at once, the higher-capacity configuration may reduce how often you need to manage installs. If you are comfortable uninstalling games you are not currently playing and downloading them again later, a smaller configuration may be workable. This is a library-management trade-off, not a claim about game performance.

What are the storage expansion options?
Xbox Storage Expansion Card
Both console lines support the Xbox Storage Expansion Card. Xbox says the card matches the internal SSD experience; it is an optional add-on sold separately. Consider it if you want more installed-game space without relying on a USB hard drive. Xbox’s comparison page identifies the supported expansion options.
USB 3.1 external hard drive
Xbox also lists USB 3.1 external HDD support. The product information does not make the same internal-SSD performance claim for a USB hard drive, so do not assume the two options are equivalent. Check Xbox’s support details for the specific drive and use you have in mind.

Will your digital games work across the consoles?
Xbox says Smart Delivery provides the best available version of a supported game for the console you play on after a single purchase. The qualification matters: Smart Delivery applies to supported games, not automatically to every digital title. Xbox also says owned digital games in its backward-compatible catalog can be installed on these consoles; that claim is limited to the catalog.

How should you make the final choice?
- Start with your screen. If Series S’s 1440p design target and 4K upscaling suit your setup, it remains a digital-gaming option. If native-4K positioning matters more, favor Series X.
- Pick a storage configuration. Compare the listed 512GB or 1TB Series S and 1TB or 2TB Series X options against how many games you want installed at once.
- Decide whether discs may matter later. Series S is all-digital. For Series X, confirm whether the specific listing has a disc drive or is the 1TB all-digital configuration.
- Compare local prices. Xbox says prices and configuration availability vary by market and retailer. Compare current offers for the exact capacity and drive configuration; no single price gap applies everywhere.
