Before you start, check which settings can be changed later: some are reversible, while others can alter content or restart a chapter.
Start with the experience you want
Decide what you want this playthrough to emphasize: story and atmosphere, exploration, resource-management tension, combat challenge, or puzzle-solving. Then identify what is making the game difficult. A broad preset can change several things at once, even when only one of them is a problem.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 describes this distinction: difficulty can come from different game scenarios, and players may want to adjust individual mechanics rather than accept one bundled setting. For example, a player could reduce combat challenge while keeping puzzles difficult, or adjust puzzles without changing combat. The guideline is design guidance, not a promise that any particular game offers those controls. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108
Adjust the source of friction
Use the categories below as a checklist when reviewing a game’s settings. They are possible adjustment areas, not features present in every survival-horror title; consult the game’s own menu and official help for exact labels and effects.

#1 Best Overall
- Combat: Look for player or enemy damage, enemy aggression or accuracy, aim or dodge assistance, and timing-window options. These may reduce combat demands without simplifying puzzles.
- Puzzles and progression: Check for a separate puzzle difficulty, hints, or a puzzle-skip option. Confirm whether a puzzle setting changes the content or progression of the game.
- Navigation and exploration: Navigation guidance, traversal assistance, ledge protection, or cues for interactable objects can help with orientation and movement without necessarily changing combat.
- Input demands: Button remapping, hold-versus-toggle controls, repeated-press requirements, camera assistance, and automatic weapon switching can reduce particular control demands.
- Sensory presentation: Subtitle size, color and background; speaker labels or direction; text-to-speech; high-contrast display; and visual warnings for sound-based information can change how game information is presented.
- Pressure systems: Where available, review resource scarcity, save rules, checkpoint frequency, timers, and oxygen or stamina demands. These can affect tension and the consequences of failure independently of combat skill.
Accessibility options can preserve other challenges
Accessibility settings are not necessarily an all-or-nothing reduction in difficulty. Some change how information is communicated or how inputs work, allowing other parts of the game to remain challenging.
The Last of Us Part II provides examples in its official accessibility materials: navigation assistance, simplified traversal, ledge guard, infinite breath, puzzle skip, enhanced listen mode, text-to-speech, traversal and combat audio cues, combat vibration cues, awareness indicators, subtitle customization, combat assists, and input remapping. Its page also notes that some puzzle progression may not be fully accessible to blind or low-vision players and recommends using the skip option in that circumstance. These are examples from one game, not a standard feature list for the genre. PlayStation’s accessibility page and PlayStation Blog’s feature article

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Settings may also alter core mechanics rather than merely presentation. EA’s PS5 Dead Space page describes Story, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Impossible difficulties, with differences involving player and enemy damage, oxygen duration, automatic healing, and enemy grappling. It also lists quick-time-event input, sprint and aim toggles, automatic weapon swapping, and aim assistance. This example applies to the game’s PS5 settings as described by EA; available options can vary by edition and platform. EA’s Dead Space PS5 gameplay settings
Check what can be changed later
Do not assume a setting is reversible just because it appears in the options menu. Check whether a change can be made mid-playthrough, whether it changes game content, and whether it restarts a chapter or run. Official examples show why this matters:

- Silent Hill 2: In a support answer dated October 7, 2024, Konami says combat difficulty can be adjusted later in the Settings menu, but puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed mid-playthrough. This applies to the support context for that title, not to survival-horror games generally. Konami’s Silent Hill 2 support answer
- The Evil Within: The Xbox 360 manual says only Casual and Survival are initially available, with additional difficulty settings unlocked after clearing the game. Difficulty cannot be raised during gameplay; it can be lowered through Options, but doing so restarts the chapter. The manual calls Casual recommended for first-time survival-horror players and describes Survival as ideal for experienced players. This is a historical example for that release, not guidance for other editions. The Evil Within Xbox 360 manual
A practical way to set up a playthrough
- Choose your priority. Decide whether you most want story and atmosphere, exploration, resource tension, combat challenge, or puzzle-solving.
- Identify the obstacle. Is the friction coming from aiming, repeated inputs, navigation, sensory information, combat pressure, or puzzle difficulty?
- Look for a specific setting. Prefer an adjustment aimed at that obstacle over changing a broad preset that may affect several mechanics.
- Check the consequences first. Read the game’s help or manual to find out whether the setting is changeable later, affects content, unlocks only after a clear, or triggers a restart.
- Revisit if needed. If the game permits mid-playthrough changes, adjust the same source of friction rather than assuming you must restart or accept an uncomfortable setup.
Option names, effects, and reversibility can differ by game version, platform, patch, and region. For the exact title you are playing, verify current in-game menus and official documentation before committing to a setting that may be locked.

- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
