How to Choose Graphics and Performance Settings for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on Nintendo Switch 2

Start with the base presentation if you want every displayed frame to come from the game and you are sensitive to interpolation artifacts. Choose optional frame generation if smoother-looking motion matters more to you than the possibility of ghosting. Capcom producer Naoto Oyama says the Nintendo Switch 2 edition targets 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. Its frame-generation option interpolates additional frames to create a visual presentation equivalent to 60 FPS; it does not make the underlying game render natively at 60 FPS. Oyama also cautions that interpolation can produce a slight ghosting effect in some scenes, and the feature can be toggled by the player.

That makes this a preference decision rather than a universal quality setting. Compare both options in the way you actually play—handheld, TV, or both—and keep the one whose motion and image behavior you find more comfortable.

What the two performance choices actually mean

Base presentation: a 30 FPS target

Oyama describes the base frame-rate target as 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. In this presentation, the game is not using generated in-between frames to create the motion effect. If your priority is seeing the game’s own rendered frames without interpolation, this is the natural starting point.

A target is a design aim, not an independent benchmark. Oyama’s statement does not establish that every scene reaches the target without variation, nor does it provide frame-time measurements, resolution figures, or a controlled test of demanding locations. Treat the number as Capcom’s stated base target rather than as a laboratory result.

Frame generation: a 60 FPS-equivalent appearance

Frame generation inserts interpolated frames between the game’s base frames. Oyama characterizes the result as a visual experience equivalent to 60 FPS. That wording matters: the game’s underlying rendering target remains 30 FPS, while the displayed motion is made to look smoother through interpolation.

Interpolation estimates how objects should move between rendered frames. When the estimate is convincing, camera pans and character movement can appear more fluid. When the scene is difficult to interpret, the inserted frame can disagree with the rendered image and create a ghosting-like trail or other reconstruction error.

Why neither option is automatically “best”

Capcom’s description establishes a trade-off, not a ranking. Base presentation favors un-interpolated frames and avoids the stated interpolation artifact risk. Frame generation favors smoother-looking motion but can show a slight ghosting effect in some situations. Capcom’s description does not establish a universal winner, a particular advantage for handheld or TV mode, or a numerical difference in image quality, responsiveness, resolution, or frame pacing.

Base presentation versus frame generation

Choice What is established Best fit for Potential drawback
Base presentation Capcom’s stated target is 30 FPS in handheld and TV modes. Frames are not being supplemented by the optional interpolation feature. Players who prefer original rendered frames, dislike reconstruction artifacts, or want the simpler presentation. Motion will not receive the smoother-looking effect described for frame generation.
Frame generation The option interpolates frames to create a visual experience equivalent to 60 FPS over the 30 FPS base target. Players who value smoother-looking movement and are comfortable evaluating interpolation for themselves. Oyama reports that some scenes can show a slight ghosting effect.

The table describes the choice using developer-reported behavior, not independent testing. Capcom has not published a supported numerical comparison of image quality, input latency, resolution, or frame pacing for the released Switch 2 build.

  1. Decide what bothers you more: visible interpolation errors or less-fluid motion. If a faint trail around a moving character, object, or camera edge is distracting, begin with the base presentation. If judder from the base cadence is what you notice first, test frame generation.
  2. Launch with the base presentation. Play long enough to judge ordinary exploration, camera turns, combat, and traversal rather than making a decision from a static menu image. You are establishing your reference for the game’s native presentation.
  3. Enable frame generation using the game’s available toggle. The final product allows the feature to be switched, but Capcom’s published information does not document a precise menu path or the complete list of graphics controls. Look for the frame-generation control in the released Switch 2 settings interface rather than relying on labels from another platform.
  4. Repeat the same activities. Use comparable camera movements, combat encounters, and travel routes. A direct A/B comparison is more useful than judging one setting on a calm scene and the other during a busy fight.
  5. Inspect moving edges, not just the overall smoothness. Watch a character crossing a detailed background, foliage or effects moving near the camera, and rapid turns. The relevant question is whether the smoother motion outweighs any ghosting-like behavior you can see.
  6. Test in your normal display mode. Repeat the comparison in handheld mode if that is how you play, and in TV mode if you use the dock. Capcom states the same base target for both, but Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published descriptions do not establish that the subjective result will be identical on every screen or viewing distance.
  7. Keep the option that remains comfortable over a full session. A setting can look impressive for a few seconds yet become tiring when you follow a moving target or rotate the camera for hours. Comfort and consistency are more useful criteria than a label such as “performance mode.”
  8. Revisit the choice when your circumstances change. Switching from a small handheld display to a large TV, changing viewing distance, or becoming more aware of trails can change which trade-off you prefer. The toggle exists so the decision can remain personal.

Choosing for handheld play

When the base presentation is the safer starting point

Choose the base presentation first if your handheld priority is a clean, direct image and you are especially sensitive to ghosting. Smaller screens can make some artifacts less obvious, but that is not a guarantee; Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published descriptions do not provide a controlled handheld image-quality study. The base option also gives you a straightforward reference before you evaluate any generated motion.

When to try frame generation

Try frame generation if camera movement and character motion feel more important to you than preserving an entirely un-interpolated presentation. Judge it at the distance and brightness you normally use. Do not infer from the 60 FPS-equivalent description that the handheld mode has a native 60 FPS render rate; the stated base target remains the same.

Choosing for TV play

Use your actual viewing setup

On a TV, sit where you normally sit and repeat the same A/B test. A larger display may make both smoothness and artifacts easier to notice, but Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published descriptions provide no measured docked-versus-handheld resolution or performance comparison. Avoid assuming that TV mode deserves frame generation—or deserves the base presentation—simply because it is connected to a larger screen.

Do not treat a display’s refresh specification as proof

A TV’s advertised refresh rate does not change the game’s stated base target. Frame generation can alter the appearance of motion, but Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published descriptions do not quantify input latency, frame pacing, or the exact signal behavior of the Switch 2 output. Make the choice from what you see and feel in the game, not from the TV’s maximum specification alone.

How to recognize and handle interpolation artifacts

What the warning means

Oyama says interpolation can be difficult in some scenes and leave “a slight ghosting effect.” This is an observation attributed to the producer in the interview, not a claim that every scene will show the effect. A ghosting-like trail may be most noticeable when an object moves quickly against a detailed or contrasting background, although Oyama’s statement does not enumerate specific triggers.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If you notice trails or doubled edges

  1. Pause and confirm that frame generation is enabled, so you know which presentation you are evaluating.
  2. Repeat the same movement with the feature disabled. If the trail disappears, the interpolation trade-off is the likely reason for the difference you are seeing.
  3. Try another scene or activity. The warning concerns some situations, not every frame of the game.
  4. If the artifact remains distracting, leave frame generation disabled. There is no requirement to use the smoother-looking option.
  5. If you prefer the smoother motion despite a minor artifact, re-enable it and decide whether the effect is acceptable during normal play rather than during a deliberate search for defects.

Do not describe a brief visual error as proof that the entire game is malfunctioning. Conversely, do not dismiss a persistent artifact if it makes the game uncomfortable for you; the intended control is the ability to toggle the feature.

What is—and is not—known about other graphics settings

Capcom’s published description establishes the base frame-rate target, the optional interpolation feature, and the reported ghosting risk. It does not enumerate every graphics setting in the released Switch 2 menu. That means this guide cannot responsibly provide a verified list of resolution modes, texture options, shadow controls, quality presets, sharpening sliders, or additional performance toggles.

Use only controls that are actually present in your copy of the game. Do not import a menu path or setting name from a PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or another Nintendo Switch 2 title. If a control is not visible, no published Capcom description supports claiming that it exists or recommending a value for it.

Information that has not been established by the cited sources

  • A measured average or minimum frame rate in a particular location.
  • A build-specific frame-time or frame-pacing chart.
  • Resolution values for handheld or TV mode.
  • A controlled input-latency comparison between the two choices.
  • A numerical image-quality comparison.
  • A separate recommendation for demanding scenes, combat, towns, or traversal.
  • A complete menu map for the released Switch 2 version.

These omissions are important when interpreting the 30 FPS and 60 FPS-equivalent descriptions: both are product behavior reported by Capcom producer Naoto Oyama, not independent measurements.

Practical decision profiles

You want the cleanest un-interpolated presentation

Use the base presentation. It matches the game’s stated native target and avoids the specific interpolation artifact risk described by Oyama. Reconsider only if the motion cadence bothers you more than the absence of generated frames.

You prioritize smooth-looking camera movement

Try frame generation. Its purpose is to provide the visual impression associated with 60 FPS while the base game remains targeted at 30 FPS. Keep it enabled if the smoother motion is more valuable to you than occasional ghosting-like behavior.

You are unsure whether you notice interpolation

Run the A/B procedure in the section above and include both handheld and TV play if you use both. Look at moving edges and follow a target through ordinary gameplay. A setting should earn its place through sustained comfort, not through the promise implied by its name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You share a system with players who disagree

Because the feature is toggleable, each player can use the presentation they prefer. Save the choice that suits your own play session rather than treating another player’s sensitivity to artifacts or motion as a universal standard.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling frame generation native 60 FPS. The described 60 FPS-equivalent appearance comes from interpolated frames over a 30 FPS base target.
  • Assuming the same subjective result in both modes. The base target is stated for handheld and TV, but no evidence establishes identical perceived smoothness or artifact visibility across displays.
  • Choosing from a specification sheet alone. Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published descriptions do not provide the latency, resolution, or frame-pacing measurements needed to make a purely numerical choice.
  • Extrapolating from one scene. Oyama’s warning concerns situations in which interpolation is difficult; one clear scene does not prove that every scene will be clear, and one artifact does not prove that every scene will show it.
  • Inventing missing menu controls. The complete Switch 2 settings list has not been established in Capcom’s and Nintendo’s published material, so use the controls visible in your released game.
  • Assuming a named “performance” option must be superior. The available developer guidance presents a preference-sensitive trade-off rather than a universal best setting.

Bottom line for Switch 2 players

For Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on Nintendo Switch 2, begin with the base presentation if you want un-interpolated frames or are intolerant of ghosting. Test the optional frame-generation feature if smoother-looking motion is your priority, remembering that its 60 FPS-equivalent appearance is created through interpolation over the 30 FPS base target. Compare both choices in the mode you actually use, and keep the one that feels better over a complete play session. Capcom’s own description supports that conditional approach; it does not establish a single best setting for every player, display, or scene.
