For a current Magic: The Gathering set, choose a Play Booster for Draft or opening packs for fun; choose a Collector Booster when you want a collecting-focused opening with premium treatments. For Sealed, first check the event’s pack specification: there is no universal pack count established for every Sealed event. Pack contents and terminology can vary by set, so check Wizards of the Coast’s official page for the set you plan to open.
Which booster fits your goal?
| What you want to do | Pack to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Draft or another Limited event | Play Booster, or the set’s designated Limited-play booster | Confirm the current set’s product details and the event’s rules. |
| Sealed | The booster type and quantity specified by the event | Do not assume every Sealed event uses the same pack count. |
| Open packs for fun | Play Booster | Review set-specific contents and accept that results vary. |
| Collect premium treatments | Collector Booster | Check the set’s listed treatments and contents; these are not universal. |
Wizards describes Play Boosters as suitable for Draft play or opening for fun. Collector Boosters are aimed at special treatments and collecting, rather than ordinary drafting. Neither type is a reliable way to obtain a particular card; if you need a specific card, a pack’s random contents cannot guarantee it.
What to buy for Draft
For an ordinary current-set Booster Draft, use the set’s Play Booster or the booster product the event identifies for Limited play. Wizards’ Booster Draft guide describes a format for up to eight players: each player opens a pack, chooses a card, and passes the rest. Players repeat this process across three packs, alternating the direction they pass packs.
At the end of the draft, a player has about 45 drafted cards, then builds a deck of at least 40 cards, adding basic lands as needed. Those are the format’s general mechanics; follow the event’s instructions if its setup differs.

What to buy for Sealed
Use the pack type and quantity named in the event rules or event listing. Play Boosters are designed for Limited play, but the available official product guidance does not establish one pack count that applies to all Sealed events. A store event, tournament, or special format may specify its own pool-building rules, so confirm those before buying packs.
When a Collector Booster makes sense
Choose a Collector Booster if your priority is a premium, collecting-focused opening and you are comfortable with the specific set’s contents and odds. Its card slots and treatments are set-specific, and it is not the ordinary choice for drafting. Check the set’s official contents page before deciding; a Collector Booster’s premium presentation still does not promise a particular card.

Example: Reality Fracture pack contents
Wizards of the Coast’s 2026 Reality Fracture set archive gives a useful illustration of how contents differ by product. These figures apply to that set, not to Magic boosters generally.
| Reality Fracture product | Rarity contents listed | Foil or special details listed |
|---|---|---|
| Play Booster | 1–5 Rare or higher, 2–6 Uncommon, 5–8 Common, and 1 Land | Contents and treatments are set-specific; consult the archive for full details. |
| Collector Booster | 5 Rare or higher, 5 Uncommon, 4 Common, and 1 Land | 0–2 Surge Foil and 11–12 Traditional Foil cards. |
The same archive says the Headliner Mythic Rare appears in fewer than 1% of Reality Fracture Collector Boosters. That rate is specific to this card and set; it should not be applied to other Collector Boosters.

Check the set’s details before buying
Booster terminology and contents change over time. A historical explanation of Play Boosters by Wizards designer Mark Rosewater describes the original combination of Set and Draft Boosters, but present-day set pages are the better guide to a pack’s actual contents. Check the current set’s official product or collecting information for card slots, treatments, and disclosed odds, then match the product to your play or collecting goal.

In an October 5, 2026 announcement, Wizards said that beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, Play Boosters will be called Booster Packs. The announcement also says foil commons and uncommons will be removed from those packs and a foil will no longer be guaranteed. It describes a God Pack containing 14 rare or mythic rare cards in 1 of every 1,000 Booster Packs, as well as increased access to traditional foil Japan Showcase cards. These are announced changes for that set boundary, not descriptions of current Reality Fracture packs; check the relevant set page for its details.
