Choose RAM in this order: confirm what your PC supports, pick enough capacity for the games and other work you run, then select a speed the processor and motherboard can use. Start with the exact PC or motherboard model—not a kit’s brand or advertised speed. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and a kit’s rated profile may require compatible hardware and a BIOS setting.
What RAM is compatible with my PC?
Look up the specifications for your exact PC or motherboard model before shopping. The documentation should establish the supported DDR generation, module form factor, number of memory slots, maximum capacity, supported module density and speeds. For a prebuilt desktop or laptop, check the system maker’s documentation; motherboard specifications alone may not cover restrictions imposed by the complete system.
Four basic checks help narrow the choice: DDR generation, DIMM versus SO-DIMM form factor, module density and speed. Check the exact memory kit’s part number against the motherboard’s Qualified Vendor List (QVL), then compare it with the processor maker’s memory guidance. AMD specifically advises checking whether memory is listed on the motherboard QVL and validated for its rated speed, timing, voltage and features such as ECC: AMD memory troubleshooting guidance.
DDR4 and DDR5 cannot be mixed
A DDR4-only motherboard cannot take DDR5 memory, and a DDR5-only board cannot take DDR4. The generations differ in physical keying and electrical specifications; buying a newer generation is not a way to upgrade a platform that does not support it. Crucial’s broad comparison lists DDR4 at 2133–5100 MT/s and DDR5 at 3200–8000+ MT/s, but those ranges do not tell you what speed a specific PC supports: Crucial’s DDR4 and DDR5 comparison.

Check DIMM, SO-DIMM and soldered memory
Desktop PCs generally use full-size DIMMs; laptops generally use smaller SO-DIMMs. These module types are not interchangeable. Some laptops and compact PCs have memory soldered to the board, have only some upgradeable slots, or impose other system-specific limits. Confirm the device documentation rather than assuming a module can be added or replaced.
Use the platform specifications, not a general rule
As one platform-specific example, AMD says Socket AM5 uses DDR5 with Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors. AMD also notes that Ryzen 8000 or 9000 processors on 600-series motherboards may require a BIOS update. This applies to that AMD platform; it does not establish compatibility for other sockets or manufacturers. See AMD’s Ryzen processor information and verify the exact board and CPU documentation.

How much RAM do you need for your computer?
Capacity depends on the games, applications and multitasking you actually do. Crucial’s September 23, 2025 guide recommends at least 8GB for casual browsing and media, at least 16GB for intermediate office work and multitasking, and at least 32GB for gaming, professional work or graphics-intensive creation. These are Crucial’s recommendations, not universal minimums or a guarantee that every PC or application will perform well at those capacities: Crucial’s RAM capacity recommendations.
For gaming, 32GB is Crucial’s recommendation for serious gaming, engineering, scientific work and entry-level multimedia use. It says some top-end users working with especially memory-intensive software may want at least 64GB. Check the requirements for the particular games and programs you use, and consider whether you keep other demanding applications open while playing.

More RAM does not automatically fix slow performance. A game can also be limited by the CPU, GPU, storage or software, and adding memory will not resolve those bottlenecks. Choose capacity to suit your workload while staying within the system’s maximum and slot limits.
What RAM speed do I need?
Use the supported memory speeds listed for your processor and motherboard as the starting point. A kit may advertise a higher data rate than the system supports; in that case, it can operate at a lower supported speed. Consider data rate alongside timings and voltage, and check the exact kit against the motherboard QVL and CPU guidance rather than relying on the headline number.

Some memory kits advertise an XMP or EXPO profile to run at a specified setting. That profile is conditional on compatible hardware and configuration; it should not be treated as guaranteed default operation merely because the memory fits the slot. Intel describes XMP as an overclocking feature for compatible DDR4 or DDR5 memory and says predefined profiles can be loaded through BIOS or a tuning application. The motherboard maker or PC OEM provides the appropriate setup method: Intel’s XMP support information.
AMD’s Ryzen memory compatibility list identifies kits tested across systems for rated speed and latency, and indicates AMD EXPO support for DDR5 or XMP compatibility where applicable. Use it as a cross-check alongside your motherboard QVL and exact CPU specifications: AMD’s Ryzen compatible memory list.

How to choose and install a compatible kit
- Identify the exact system. Record the PC model, motherboard model and processor model. For a laptop or prebuilt, use the manufacturer’s system specifications.
- Confirm the memory type. Check DDR generation and DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, and find out whether memory is soldered or upgradeable.
- Check the limits. Confirm maximum capacity, supported number of modules, density and speeds in the system documentation.
- Set capacity for your workload. Use application requirements and your own gaming and multitasking needs; treat general capacity recommendations as starting points.
- Verify the exact kit. Look up the kit’s part number in the motherboard QVL and the processor maker’s memory guidance. Check timings, voltage and relevant features such as ECC as well as capacity and speed.
- Buy a matched kit and use the recommended slots. AMD advises using modules sold together as a kit and installing them in the slots specified by the motherboard maker.
- Configure a rated profile only if supported. Follow the board maker’s BIOS instructions for XMP or EXPO rather than assuming the profile is active by default.
If the memory does not run at its rated setting
If a validated kit does not reach its intended operation, AMD’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the BIOS, loading optimized defaults, confirming that the modules are seated correctly and installed in the recommended slots, and checking supported memory profiles. Start with the motherboard or system maker’s instructions; changing settings beyond those supported by the platform may reduce stability.
