Choose the one whose usual turns sound fun: fighting up close, sneaking and solving skill checks, casting spells, supporting allies, controlling enemies, or switching between several roles. Your first choice is not permanent—Withers can let you rebuild—so focus on the playstyle you want to try rather than trying to predict a perfect build.
Start with the turns you want to take
Class affects your character’s abilities in and out of combat, and classes can offer distinctive dialogue choices. Before looking at rankings or detailed builds, picture what you would enjoy doing repeatedly during a fight.
- Fight on the front line: Choose a class whose features support weapon combat and taking hits if you want to stay close to enemies.
- Scout, sneak, and handle skills: Look for a class that fits a stealthy approach and the skill checks you want your character to handle.
- Cast spells and adapt: Consider a spellcasting class if choosing abilities for different situations is part of the fun.
- Support or control: Look for features that help allies or limit what enemies can do.
- Keep options open: A class with a broader toolkit may appeal if you want to change how you contribute from one situation to the next.
These are decision prompts, not guarantees that every subclass within a role plays the same way. Check the feature descriptions in the current character-creation screen before settling on a specific build.
Compare the real choices that matter
Once you have a preferred role, compare candidate classes by the actions and planning they require—not by an assumed universal ranking.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| What will I do most turns? | Read the class features and ask whether their recurring actions match your preferred combat loop. |
| How much spell or resource management do I want? | Decide whether you enjoy selecting abilities and adapting to encounters, or prefer a more repeatable action pattern. This is a preference check, not a claim that every martial or spellcasting subclass is equally simple. |
| Which ability score supports my plan? | Check the abilities that affect the class features and rolls you expect to use. BG3 uses ability scores for most dice rolls; use the game’s current allocation screen rather than copying a generic tabletop build. |
| Which skills should my character handle? | Class determines some skill choices, while your background grants two skill proficiencies. Consider the checks you want your character to be good at. |
| Does a subclass fit? | Compare subclass features and when they become available for the class. Subclass selection occurs at class level 1, 2, or 3 depending on the class. |
| How much planning do I want? | Starting with one class keeps the initial decision focused. Multiclassing is optional and adds choices to plan around. |
Character creation uses point buy; the BG3 Wiki’s character-creation reference lists 27 points. Because allocation and class options are presented in-game, use the current screen to verify exact starting choices.
Choose a subclass for its features, not just its name
A subclass specializes a class and adds features that reinforce or modify its theme. The level when you choose one varies by class, so a subclass may be an early part of your plan for one class and a later decision for another. Read the actual feature descriptions and consider whether they support the turns you want to take.

Larian’s Community Update 21 reported 12 classes and 46 subclasses in 2023. Larian later announced 12 more subclasses for Patch 8—one for each existing class—with examples including College of Glamour Bard, Path of Giants Barbarian, Hexblade Warlock, and Bladesinging Wizard. The 46 figure is a launch-era count, not a current total; the announcement’s examples are not recommendations or a ranking.
Think about your party without trying to solve it mathematically
Your party’s existing roles can help you compare options. For example, you may prefer a character who contributes differently from companions you already plan to bring. But the sources do not establish a single required party composition, and there is no need to sacrifice a class you enjoy to satisfy a supposed formula. Companions and the option to rebuild both reduce the pressure to get the entire party plan right at character creation.

Should you multiclass?
Multiclassing lets you put levels into different classes, but those levels come from the same overall character-level budget. Each level spent in a new class is one not spent gaining the next features of your original class. Larian removed ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing in BG3 and described it as a way to experiment and roleplay as well as build combinations; the studio also noted that D&D experience helps with the feature.
If you are new to BG3 or do not have a particular combination in mind, you can defer multiclassing instead of making it part of your starting plan. The BG3 Wiki’s class reference says multiclassing is unavailable on Explorer difficulty. Check the current in-game options for the difficulty and rules you are using.

- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
You can change your class later
An early Act 1 NPC can let you restart your build from level 1, changing class-related choices such as proficiencies, attributes, spells, and cantrips. The service is Withers’s respec. Larian presented respec as a way to encourage experimentation and finding a playstyle that suits you. That makes the first class choice meaningful, but not an irreversible commitment.
A quick decision checklist
- Pick the kind of contribution you want to make most often: frontline combat, stealth and skills, spellcasting, support or control, or a mix.
- Check the class’s actual features and the ability score and skills they rely on in the character-creation screen.
- Look at the subclass options and their features at the levels you expect to reach.
- Consider how the role fits your party, but do not treat a particular party composition as mandatory.
- Start with one class if you would rather learn its features before deciding whether to multiclass; use Withers’s respec if you later want a different build.
BG3 is based on 5e Dungeons & Dragons, but the tabletop framework is context rather than a substitute for checking BG3’s own features and options. The Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook is optional background reading, not a requirement for choosing or playing a class.
