What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single Xbox-wide “best” upscaling setting. Choose the mode in the individual game’s graphics or display menu: Performance when smooth motion and responsiveness matter most, Quality when detail and effects matter most, and Balanced only after checking that title’s stated targets. The Xbox model, game update and display can all change which options are available.
Upscaling is normally part of the game’s rendering pipeline, not a universal console switch. A game may render internally below the output resolution, then reconstruct or scale that image. The result depends on the developer’s implementation, so judge the mode using the game’s own frame-rate target, resolution information and image-quality behavior.

What Performance, Quality and Upscaling Actually Mean
Mode names describe priorities rather than fixed Xbox specifications. Developers decide how much resolution, detail, effects and frame-rate headroom each preset receives. Two games can use the same label while making very different compromises.

Performance generally targets a higher or steadier frame rate. To reach that target, a game can reduce its internal render resolution, lower shadow or lighting quality, simplify crowds and effects, or use more aggressive dynamic resolution. Bethesda’s Starfield guidance, for example, says its performance prioritization lowers internal resolution and detail for special effects, lighting and crowds; that advice applies to Starfield rather than every Xbox title (Bethesda’s Starfield display-settings guidance).

Choose Performance for games where camera movement, aiming, racing lines, parries or input response benefit from fluid motion. A higher frame-rate target is not automatically achieved in every scene: dynamic resolution may reduce the internal image when the workload rises.
Quality mode
Quality usually gives the renderer more time for higher detail, a higher internal resolution, denser effects or more advanced lighting. The usual trade-off is a lower frame-rate target. “Quality” does not guarantee a particular resolution, refresh rate or ray-tracing feature; confirm the current game notes or the text in its menu.
Balanced mode
Balanced is a title-specific compromise. It can sit between Performance and Quality, but its exact target must be read rather than inferred. In DOOM Eternal Update 6, Balanced was listed at 2160p and 60 FPS on Series X and 1440p and 60 FPS on Series S. Those figures describe that update’s published targets, not a platform-wide Xbox standard.
Upscaling
Upscaling creates a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. The game may use a simple scaler, temporal reconstruction or an algorithm such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit sample exposes native-resolution, bilinear and FSR paths for developers (Microsoft’s FSR code sample). It does not establish a player-facing FSR switch that exists in every Xbox game.
Why the Game Menu, Not a Global Xbox Setting, Decides
Xbox provides the hardware and operating-system features, but each game integrates its own renderer and presets. The console’s Optimized for Series X|S information describes capabilities; it does not promise identical Performance or Quality modes in every optimized title.

A game can expose separate resolution, frame-rate, ray-tracing and upscaling controls, combine them into presets, or provide no choice at all. A patch can also add, rename or retune a mode. Therefore, start with the exact game and version installed on your exact console. Do not assume that a setting shown in a PC guide, an older console-generation article or another game’s menu exists on Xbox.
A Reliable Decision Process
- Identify the title, update and console. Open the game’s graphics, display or video menu and check its support notes. Record whether you are using Series X, Series S or another Xbox model, because mode availability and targets can differ.
- Decide what you notice first. Select Performance if motion clarity, low perceived latency and consistent control response are your priorities. Select Quality if fine geometry, lighting, effects and image stability matter more. If Balanced is offered, compare its stated frame rate and resolution with the other choices instead of treating the label as automatically superior.
- Read the renderer’s caveats. Look for “dynamic resolution,” “reconstruction,” “ray tracing,” “120 Hz,” “VRR,” or a resolution range. A displayed output such as 4K may still come from a substantially lower internal resolution.
- Match the mode to the screen. Confirm that the television or monitor accepts the mode’s refresh rate and resolution. A 120-FPS option can require a 120 Hz-compatible display. Xbox describes variable refresh rate (VRR) as allowing a capable screen to adjust its refresh rate to the game’s frame rate (Xbox’s VRR explanation).
- Play representative scenes. Check a busy fight, a dark scene, distant foliage, fast camera pans and menus. Look for shimmer, ghosting, crawling edges or sudden softness. These observations are more useful than the preset name alone because reconstruction quality varies by scene.
- Recheck after updates. Graphics patches can change targets or add options. If behavior differs from an older guide, consult the game’s current patch notes and in-game description.
How Resolution and Upscaling Affect What You See
Output resolution is the signal sent to the display; internal resolution is what the game actually renders before scaling or reconstruction. Rendering fewer pixels generally leaves more GPU time for frame-rate headroom, while rendering more pixels can improve fine detail but costs performance. Dynamic resolution changes that internal value during play to keep a target frame rate.
A higher output number therefore does not guarantee a sharper image. A 4K output reconstructed from a lower internal image can look less detailed than a well-implemented 1440p or 1800p mode in another game. Conversely, a good temporal upscaler can preserve edges and detail while allowing a higher frame-rate target. Artifact behavior depends on motion vectors, sharpening, anti-aliasing, foliage, particles and the developer’s tuning.
Microsoft’s energy-efficiency guidance discusses dynamic resolution and upscaling as developer choices (Xbox Game Energy Efficiency Essentials). Treat those techniques as tools in a game’s renderer, not as evidence that one algorithm or preset is universally best.
Display Requirements: 120 Hz and VRR
Check the screen before choosing a high-frame-rate mode. A 60-FPS game can run on a conventional 60 Hz display, while a 120-FPS target requires a display that accepts 120 Hz at the relevant resolution. In the published DOOM Eternal Update 6 notes, Performance Mode explicitly required a 120 Hz-compatible display, and the listed resolutions also required a compatible display.

VRR can make variable frame rates appear smoother by letting the display follow the game’s changing cadence. It cannot create extra frames or raise a game’s internal resolution. Enable VRR on both the Xbox and the display only when both devices support it, and check the display’s input-specific limits: some screens support 120 Hz or VRR only on particular HDMI ports or at particular resolutions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a game’s 120-FPS option looks unavailable, verify the console video-output setting, the cable and the display input before assuming the game is broken. An HDMI switch, receiver or capture device can also limit the signal negotiated between the Xbox and screen.
Published Example: DOOM Eternal Update 6
Xbox Wire’s 29 June 2021 description of Update 6 is a useful illustration of why mode labels need context (the Update 6 mode specifications). It lists dynamic resolution scaling for all modes and gives these title-specific targets:
| Console and mode | Published target | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Series X Performance | 1800p at 120 FPS | Requires a 120 Hz-compatible display; dynamic resolution scaling is used. |
| Series X Balanced | 2160p at 60 FPS | Dynamic resolution scaling is used; listed resolution requires a compatible display. |
| Series X Ray Tracing | 1800p at 60 FPS | Performance and Balanced are unavailable while ray tracing is enabled. |
| Series S Performance | 1080p at 120 FPS | Requires a 120 Hz-compatible display; dynamic resolution scaling is used. |
| Series S Balanced | 1440p at 60 FPS | Dynamic resolution scaling is used; listed resolution requires a compatible display. |
These are historical, game-update targets, not guarantees for every scene or every Xbox game. They show the practical trade-off: on Series X, Performance exchanges output detail for a 120-FPS target, while Balanced raises the listed resolution at 60 FPS. On Series S, both the performance and balanced targets are lower than their Series X counterparts. Confirm that the current build still presents the same options before using the table as a buying or setup decision.
Published Example: The Witcher 3 on Series X|S
The next-generation update announcement for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt shows another kind of variation (Xbox Wire’s 23 November 2022 update coverage). It describes Performance and Quality modes on Series X, while Series S receives dedicated 30-FPS and 60-FPS modes. The announcement also describes FSR use on Series X.

This example demonstrates two points. First, the same game can expose different controls on different Series consoles. Second, “FSR support” is a game implementation, not proof of a universal Xbox setting. If your console or menu does not show the option described in an article, use the controls shipped for your version rather than trying to force a system-wide toggle.
Starfield’s Guidance Is Game-Specific
Bethesda’s Starfield support page recommends a 120 Hz VRR display for its Xbox display settings and explains that performance prioritization reduces internal resolution and detail for effects, lighting and crowds. That is useful when tuning Starfield, but it should not be generalized to every title: another game may preserve different details, target a different frame rate or omit a 120 Hz mode altogether.

Fast action, shooters and racing
Start with Performance when rapid camera movement and precise timing dominate play. Higher frame-rate targets can make panning and input feel more immediate, especially on a 120 Hz display. Switch to Quality if the game’s Performance image shows distracting reconstruction artifacts or if you value environmental detail more than responsiveness.
Role-playing games and exploration
Quality can be attractive when you spend more time examining environments, character faces, distant architecture and lighting than making frame-perfect inputs. Balanced is worth trying when it offers a documented middle target, but compare a moving scene rather than judging a static screenshot.

Ray tracing can change reflections, shadows or global-lighting behavior while consuming rendering time. A ray-traced preset may have a lower frame-rate target and may disable Performance or Balanced, as the DOOM Eternal Update 6 notes do. Treat ray tracing as a separate priority from both resolution and frame rate.

Living-room viewing distance
At a greater seating distance, the practical difference between internal-resolution targets may be less obvious than judder during camera movement. At a desk or on a large screen viewed closely, shimmer and fine-detail loss may be easier to see. Use your normal seating position when comparing modes.
Troubleshooting Common Upscaling Problems
The game only offers 30 FPS
Check whether a 60-FPS or Performance mode is tied to a current-generation console, a specific display capability or a recent update. Some titles intentionally provide separate 30-FPS and 60-FPS options rather than a Quality/Performance naming scheme. If no alternative appears in the current menu, the developer has not exposed one for that build.
The 120-FPS option is missing
- Confirm that the Xbox video settings and the display input negotiate 120 Hz.
- Connect directly to a compatible HDMI port and bypass equipment that may cap refresh rate.
- Check the game’s own requirement; a 120 Hz screen alone does not make every title offer a 120-FPS mode.
- Install the latest game update if the option was added in a patch.
The image looks soft or shimmers
Move through foliage, fences, particles and distant geometry while comparing modes. Those areas reveal temporal reconstruction limits. Try Quality or Balanced if available, then check whether sharpening, film grain or motion-blur controls are separate settings. Do not infer that the console is outputting a lower signal simply because the game’s internal image is being upscaled.

VRR appears to flicker or does nothing
Verify that VRR is enabled on both devices and supported at the selected resolution and refresh rate. VRR follows the game’s frame-rate changes; it cannot compensate for a mode that is consistently outside the display’s supported range. If flicker occurs only in one title or mode, compare with a fixed-refresh setting and consult that game’s support notes.
A guide’s numbers do not match the menu
Check the publication date and patch version. The DOOM Eternal figures above come from a 2021 update announcement, while The Witcher 3 figures refer to its 2022 next-generation update. Later patches, platform differences or menu redesigns can change what you see.
When a New Display Is Worth Considering
A 120 Hz VRR-compatible television or monitor is relevant only if your Xbox model and the specific game support a mode that can use it. Before buying, verify the game’s documented refresh-rate requirement, the display’s supported resolution and VRR range, and which HDMI input provides those features. Neither a 120 Hz panel nor VRR guarantees that a game will render at 120 FPS; they remove a display limitation when the game supplies the mode.
Quick Recap
A Compact Checklist
- Identify the Xbox model and current game update.
- Read the game’s Performance, Quality, Balanced and ray-tracing descriptions.
- Choose smoothness and responsiveness, or detail and effects, as your primary goal.
- Check internal-resolution, dynamic-resolution and upscaling notes rather than relying on output resolution alone.
- Confirm 120 Hz and VRR compatibility when a mode requires them.
- Compare moving scenes from your normal viewing distance.
- Revisit the choice after major patches.
