For most buyers, the choice is between the standard Nintendo Switch 2 and the bundle that includes Mario Kart World. Choose the bundle if you want the game and its current local price is a better deal than buying the system and game separately; otherwise, buy the system on its own. The console is ready to play with its included Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, grip, straps, cables, and AC adapter, so add accessories only to solve a specific need.
Standard Switch 2 or the Mario Kart World bundle?
Nintendo’s U.S. store lists a standard system and a Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle. The bundle includes the console and a full download of the game. Since price, stock, and savings can change, compare the live bundle price with the current prices of the system and game in your region before deciding. Nintendo’s $449.99 system and $499.99 bundle figures were U.S. launch MSRPs announced April 18, 2025—not current prices.

Nintendo lists the base system package as including the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, Joy-Con 2 grip and straps, dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Check the product listing for your region to confirm its exact contents.
What the system offers
Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Its built-in 7.9-inch LCD has 1920 × 1080 resolution, HDR support, VRR up to 120 Hz, and a maximum 120 fps in supported games. In TV mode, the dedicated dock supports up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps; supported games and displays can also use 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p. Resolution, HDR, VRR, and frame rate depend on the game and compatible display. Nintendo says TV Mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. The system has 256 GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. Compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. If a particular older game is a deciding factor, check Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide and game-specific compatibility information before buying. Switch 2-exclusive games and features may also matter if you are interested in its newer library or controls.
Which accessories are worth buying?
Start with the job you need an accessory to do. None of the items below is a universal requirement: the system already includes the main hardware needed for handheld, tabletop, and TV play.

More game storage
For Switch 2 game storage, you need a microSD Express card; a conventional microSD card from the original Switch cannot store or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. Nintendo supports cards up to 2 TB, and first use requires an internet system update. An older Switch card may still provide access to screenshots and videos, but it is not an expansion drive for Switch 2 games. Buy a card if the 256 GB internal capacity, part of which is reserved for system use, is not enough for your library. See Nintendo’s microSD and microSD Express compatibility guidance.
Protection for carrying
If you regularly take the console with you, consider a carrying case and screen protector designed for Switch 2. Nintendo sells both. For a third-party option, confirm that the listing explicitly says it fits Switch 2; a case or protector for the original Switch may not fit.

Another way to play or charge controllers
The included Joy-Con 2 controllers are enough to get started. A Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional traditional controller, while the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip joins the Joy-Con pair into a controller-shaped grip and charges them over USB-C. Consider either only if its control style or charging convenience suits how you play. Whether another controller is needed for local multiplayer depends on the game and the number of players; check the game’s controller requirements.
Camera, second dock, or replacement power
Nintendo lists a Switch 2 camera, a separate dock set, and a replacement AC adapter. These are situational: the camera is for supported video features, a second dock can serve another TV location, and a replacement adapter is for a lost or damaged one. Can you reuse original Switch games, controllers, and accessories?
Some do carry over, but compatibility depends on the exact game or accessory. Compatible physical and digital Switch games can be played on Switch 2, subject to title-specific limits. Nintendo’s transfer guide and compatibility guidance are the right checks for a specific game or item.
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console or charge from it. You will need separate compatible charging equipment if you plan to use them. The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB. Some older straps, grips, and other accessories do not work with Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2; verify each item against Nintendo’s accessory compatibility information rather than assuming a shared name or shape means it fits.

- Compare the bundle and separate system-and-game prices where you live; treat Nintendo’s 2025 U.S. launch MSRPs as historical, not current.
