Being cleared means a player may be available; it does not mean he will receive his usual workload. Check the latest official status, look for a specific workload update, then compare the player’s likely opportunity with your best substitute before your lineup locks.
Check availability and workload separately
Start with the latest official injury report, which lists practice participation separately from game status. The NFL’s Week 4, 2026 injury report shows examples of practice labels such as “Full Participation in Practice” and “Limited Participation in Practice,” alongside game designations such as “Questionable” and “Out.” Those labels describe different things: practice participation is not a game-day snap count, and a game designation does not tell you how much a player will be used.
The NFL’s Injury Report Policy also distinguishes practice reporting from game status. Its older policy document says a player listed on a practice report but omitted from the game-status report is considered by the club certain to play. That is an availability signal, not a promise of normal playing time; check current league guidance rather than treating an older policy document as definitive.
Look for evidence of the player’s expected role
Before deciding, look for a specific team or coach statement about usage, or a credible report that identifies a snap restriction or changed role. If there is no player-specific workload information, treat the snap count as uncertain. The official status alone cannot supply a reliable estimate, and there is no universal snap threshold that makes a player a sit.

This distinction matters especially after a concussion. The NFL’s return-to-participation protocol describes five phases before a player diagnosed with concussion is cleared for full participation. It says recovery time varies and there is no set timeline; club medical staff make the return-to-play decision, which must be confirmed by an independent neurological consultant. The protocol’s medical clearance does not project fantasy workload. As the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee puts it: “Each player and each concussion is unique.”
Compare the player with your actual alternative
Make the call using your league’s scoring and the roles available in your lineup, rather than treating “cleared” or “limited” as an automatic start-or-sit rule.

- Expected opportunity: Consider likely snaps, routes, touches, or other usage that matters at the player’s position. Do not invent a number if none is reported.
- Role and scoring: A player with a valuable normal role may still be a better choice than a replacement despite some workload uncertainty. The answer can change with position and scoring format.
- Substitute quality: Compare the returning player with the healthy option’s expected role and likely floor or ceiling. A meaningful restriction weighs more when a comparable alternative is available.
- Information before lock: If updated reporting is due before your lineup deadline, waiting may help. If no useful update is expected, make the decision with the uncertainty you have.
This is a decision framework, not a quantified projection. Without the player’s name, week, injury, team updates, scoring rules, available substitutes, and kickoff timing, there is no sound player-specific recommendation.

Check your platform’s lineup-lock rules and the player’s scheduled kickoff. NFL Fantasy’s 2024 official rules allow active/reserve changes before a player’s scheduled start, subject to the platform’s clock and rules. Other platforms and league settings can differ. If your player starts early, a later-game substitute may no longer be usable once the relevant lock applies.
