A general brand chart may not describe every style: a printed shirt can use a particular blank, fit, or collection with its own measurements. Check that the guide applies to the listed product and, where relevant, to your region.

Treat the product’s chart and fit description as the starting point, rather than assuming that your usual size in another tee will carry over.

Retailer guides illustrate why the exact chart matters. Redbubble’s Help Center article, “How do I choose the perfect size?”, updated April 11, 2025, describes a flat-lay method for most of its T-shirts and says fitted and relaxed collections have their own size information. Jockey India likewise recommends checking garment dimensions against a well-fitting shirt, but its chart applies to Jockey products. Neither is a universal conversion chart.
Redbubble’s help article puts its own approach this way: “Most of the T-shirts offered on Redbubble use flat lay measurements for sizing.” That statement is useful context for shopping there, not a rule for every retailer. Its separate information for fitted and relaxed collections is another reason to follow the relevant product guide rather than carrying a measurement across styles without checking.
Measure a T-shirt that already fits the way you want
Use a shirt whose fit you like—not necessarily one with the same size label as the tee you are buying. A flexible soft measuring tape is convenient, but a ruler or another straight measuring tool works if it is long enough. Measure the garment, not your body, when comparing with a garment-measurement chart. If you do not have a measuring tool, you can still use the shirt as a reference, but a number-based comparison is more useful when sizes are close.
Choose a reference shirt that reflects the silhouette you are trying to buy. If you want the new tee to fit like a favorite regular shirt, use that one; if you want a looser look, use a shirt you already find relaxed. A reference that is stretched, unusually worn, or a different shape may not be a helpful comparison, so lay it flat and smooth it without pulling the fabric.
- Lay the shirt flat. Smooth it on a level surface without stretching the fabric. Make sure the body is straight and the side seams are not pulled or folded inward.
- Measure across the chest. Measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. This is often called pit-to-pit or chest width. Keep the tape level and measure the garment flat.
- Measure the length. Measure from the high shoulder point near the collar down to the bottom hem. Follow the same start and end points used by the product chart if it defines them.
- Measure the shoulders if the listing provides that dimension. Shoulder width can help distinguish between two shirts with similar chest measurements, particularly if you want to avoid a narrow or dropped-shoulder look.
Write down the measurements and how you took them. This helps you compare several candidates without relying on memory or switching between different measurement methods. Use inches or centimeters consistently; if the chart offers both, select one unit and compare like with like. Do not treat an approximate measurement taken at a different point on the shirt as an exact match.
Redbubble’s guide recommends measuring pit-to-pit and multiplying by two for chest circumference, then measuring from the shoulder to the hem for length. Jockey India also recommends comparing chest, shoulder, and length dimensions with a well-fitting tee. Follow the measurement definitions in the listing you are using; retailers may label or define dimensions differently.
Check whether chest means width or circumference
A flat pit-to-pit measurement and a full chest circumference are not the same number. The flat measurement runs across the front of the garment; circumference describes the distance around it. Before comparing your shirt with a chart, check which one the chart gives.

- If both measurements are flat widths: compare them directly.
- If both are full circumferences: compare them directly.
- If your shirt is measured flat but the chart gives circumference: double your flat width to estimate the garment’s circumference for comparison.
- If the chart does not say what its chest number means: do not guess. Ask the seller to clarify whether it is a flat width or a circumference.
For example, if your favorite shirt measures 21 inches from armpit to armpit while flat, its estimated circumference is 42 inches. That arithmetic only makes the two measurements comparable; it does not say which size you should order. You still need to compare the result with the chart, length, cut, and fit you want.
A common source of confusion is comparing a flat width from one source with a number labeled “chest” on another source without checking its definition. The label by itself does not tell you whether the number is across the garment or around it. If one retailer presents a flat measurement and another does not explain its format, pause before using the figures to rank sizes. A short clarification from the seller is safer than assuming that the two numbers use the same method.
Compare more than one dimension
Start with chest and length, then use shoulder width where it is listed. A close chest match alone does not guarantee a similar fit: one shirt may be shorter, longer, or broader at the shoulders. If two sizes look plausible, compare all the dimensions the seller provides rather than choosing by one number.
Use your preferred shirt as a reference for the silhouette you want. If your reference tee feels right through the chest but hangs too short, for instance, a candidate with a similar chest and more length may be a better match—provided its cut also suits you. Decide which dimensions matter most to you before ordering; there is no universal allowance that can reliably translate every chart into the same fit.
Think of the comparison as a set of trade-offs, not a search for a magic letter. One size may be closer to your reference in chest while another is closer in length. If shoulder width is listed, it can help explain why a tee with a similar chest measurement might still look different on the body. The retailer guides described here do not establish a universal amount of extra room to add for comfort, so base the decision on the measurements of shirts you prefer and the seller’s description of the cut.

When comparing two candidate sizes, note the differences rather than just circling a winner. For example, you might record that one is nearer to your preferred chest measurement and the other is nearer to your preferred length. Then check the cut and any tolerance on the chart. This makes your choice deliberate: you are deciding which dimensions matter most to you, not assuming that a larger or smaller letter is automatically better.

Match the listed cut to your preferred fit
Read the fit description along with the numbers. Fitted, regular, relaxed, and oversized describe intended silhouettes, but the labels do not establish one measurement standard across sellers. The same letter size can feel different in different cuts, product lines, or blanks.
- Closer fit: Look for dimensions close to a shirt that fits nearer to your body. Do not rely on the label alone.
- Regular fit: Compare with a regular-fit shirt you already like and check how the listing describes its cut.
- Relaxed fit: Use the product’s stated measurements and fit notes. A relaxed label on one listing does not guarantee the same shape as another seller’s relaxed tee.
- Oversized fit: Prefer a shirt designed and charted as oversized if that is the silhouette you want. Automatically sizing up a regular-cut shirt can make it longer or broader in ways that do not match an intentional oversized cut.
It can be tempting to use a size-up as a shortcut to a relaxed or oversized look, but that changes the garment’s measurements according to its own pattern. The result may not resemble a tee designed for that silhouette. First check whether the product itself is described as relaxed or oversized; then compare its chart with a reference shirt that has the shape you want.
Honeyshirt’s guide, last updated October 2, 2026, describes products in its print partner’s catalog that use the classic heavyweight cotton Gildan 5000 blank. It characterizes that blank as a unisex straight cut and advises choosing a larger size for a relaxed fit or layering, or a smaller one for a closer fit. Those suggestions apply to the products described in that guide, not to every graphic tee. If another product uses a different blank or cut, use its own chart and fit information.
This example shows why blank information can be useful but should not be overgeneralized. A guide tied to one blank can help explain the fit of the products it covers; it does not establish that every graphic T-shirt using a similar size label or description will measure the same way. If the listing does not identify the blank or explain its cut, rely on the dimensions provided for that product and ask the seller when a key detail is missing.
Account for chart tolerances and seller policies
A size chart may describe expected garment measurements without promising that every finished shirt is identical. Redbubble’s Help Center guide states a ±1-inch tolerance for measurements in its guide. Treat that as a Redbubble-specific allowance, not an apparel-wide rule. If two sizes are close, a stated tolerance can mean the actual garment may differ enough to affect a borderline choice.

For example, if a candidate measurement appears only slightly closer to your reference than another, the chart’s stated tolerance may be relevant to that comparison. It does not tell you which size to choose, and it should not be applied to a different seller unless that seller publishes the same allowance. Look for the tolerance on the exact product guide or ask the seller whether one applies.
Before buying, check the current product page and the seller’s exchange or return policy. Confirm any conditions and deadlines there rather than assuming that you can exchange a size or that one retailer’s policy applies elsewhere. Honeyshirt’s guide reports that its store offers exchanges within 60 days of delivery; that is a store-specific policy reported in its October 2, 2026 guide and may change. A stated exchange window is useful only if it applies to your order and you meet the current terms. Read the seller’s policy before purchase, including any conditions that the page describes. Do not infer that an exchange is available merely because another retailer offers one, or that an exchange policy is identical to a return policy.
Redbubble’s guide also warns that international product sizes may vary. If you are ordering across regions, rely on the product’s stated garment measurements and regional information rather than converting a familiar letter size by assumption.
Make the choice when two sizes are close
When more than one size seems plausible, compare the measurements in the order that matters to you: chest, length, then shoulder width if available. Recheck that your own measurement and the seller’s number describe the same thing. If the chart gives a tolerance, factor it into a close decision rather than treating each listed figure as exact.
- Confirm the garment and chart. Make sure the guide belongs to this specific style and cut.
- Normalize the chest measurement. Establish whether you are comparing flat width with flat width or circumference with circumference.
- Compare length and shoulders. These can rule out a size that matches your chest but not the proportions you prefer.
- Use the fit label as context. Decide whether the shirt is intended to be fitted, regular, relaxed, or oversized and whether that matches your goal.
- Check uncertainty and recourse. Read any stated tolerance and the current policy before placing the order.
If two sizes remain plausible, there is no reader-facing universal guidance from the retailer guides discussed here that says to always size up or always size down. The more useful question is which candidate is closer on the dimensions you prioritize and better aligned with the stated cut. If the answer is still unclear because a measurement is missing, undefined, or close to a published tolerance, ask the seller before ordering.
If a key dimension is missing or its definition is unclear, contact the seller before ordering. A clear answer about chest width, circumference, or the applicable chart is more useful than trying to infer a fit from a size letter.
What a size chart cannot tell you
A chart is a practical comparison tool, not a guarantee of fit.
