Choose youth goalie gear by measuring the child, consulting the chart for the exact brand and model, and checking how the pieces fit together in the child’s stance. Leg pads, catchers, and blockers use different sizing methods; age labels alone cannot confirm fit.
How to size youth goalie leg pads
Start with the sizing instructions for the exact pad model you are considering. Brands may define pad sizes differently, so a measurement method or chart from one retailer is not a universal conversion rule.
As one reference, Pure Hockey’s guide asks you to measure from the knee’s pivot joint to the floor while seated, and to measure height barefoot. It says the knee should land in the middle of the pad’s knee cradle. Use those measurements with the chart for the specific pad—not as a substitute for it.
For an in-person fitting, have the child wear the gear they will use with the pads, including goalie skates and knee protection. Check the fit in the child’s normal stance and butterfly position: the knee should land in the intended area of the cradle, with no obvious gap or interference. If you can, ask a goalie-equipment fitter to check the assembled setup.

How to size a goalie catcher and blocker
Measure each hand from the base of the palm to the tip of the middle finger, with the hand open and flat. Then consult the chart for the specific brand and model. Ice Warehouse’s general sizing guide describes its chart as a guideline, not a guarantee of fit.
Catcher fit
Try the catcher on and close it naturally. The fingers should not be jammed into the ends, the palm should feel stable, and the glove should close smoothly without fighting the hand. Check that the hand does not shift excessively inside.
Blocker fit
The hand should sit centered, the wrist should move comfortably, and the blocker should stay stable rather than twisting. Grip the stick and check that the blocker stays square. Confirm that arm protection reaches under the cuffs without restricting movement or leaving an exposed wrist gap.

These are practical fitting checks, not a replacement for a hands-on trial. When possible, have the child try the gear on before buying.
Should you choose by age or size label?
Use youth, junior, intermediate, and senior labels only as a first filter. Pure Hockey’s guide lists youth for ages 3–6, junior for 7–12, intermediate for 12–14, and senior for 13 and older, while noting that these ranges are based on average-sized people. It gives the example that a larger 11-year-old might need senior gloves. A child’s measurement, the model’s chart, and the fit on the hand matter more than an age band.
Ice Warehouse also publishes hand-length ranges, but its general chart is not brand-specific and does not guarantee fit. If a child falls between sizes, a larger glove may offer more coverage and a smaller one may allow more mobility—but only choose a size in which the hand remains stable and the catcher closes or blocker moves comfortably.

Choose handedness before ordering
Make sure the catcher, blocker, and stick match the goalie’s setup:
- Regular: catcher on the left hand and blocker on the right.
- Full Right: catcher on the right hand and blocker on the left.
Check handedness on each item before ordering a combination; the stick should correspond to the same orientation.
How to compare catcher and blocker designs
Once sizing and handedness are settled, compare models on fit, movement, protection, and the way they feel to the goalie. Design labels are not a universal ranking or a guarantee of better performance.

Catcher break and pocket
Common catcher break styles include 580, 590, and 600, while pocket constructions include single-T and double-T designs. These describe different designs and feel; there is no single style that is right for every young goalie. Try the glove if possible and see whether it closes naturally and retains pucks comfortably.
Blocker feel and use
Consider how the blocker centers on the hand, stays stable, and feels when gripping the stick. Board feel and rebound direction vary by design, but no particular style should be treated as a shortcut to better play.
Protection, mobility, and level of play
Recreational, performance, and elite tiers can differ in materials, protection, weight, adjustability, and price. Match the level to how often the child plays and the protection and fit they need—not to the status implied by a tier name. In every tier, the child should be able to move naturally, bend the wrist, grip the stick, and close the catcher without fighting the equipment.

Is a try-goalie kit enough?
Bauer’s Learn to Save Goal Kit listing gives age ranges of XS/S for ages 4–7 and S/M for ages 7–9. The listed kit includes wide-channel pads designed to fit over existing shin pads, a blocker that fastens over an existing hockey glove, a Prodigy-style catcher, a padded jersey, and a travel bag. Bauer positions it for young skaters trying the goalie position; the listing does not present it as a full dedicated competitive goalie setup. Check league requirements and the child’s actual fit before use.
Where to get fitting help
Hockey Canada’s goalie equipment resource page links to fitting videos covering pads, blocker and glove, knee guards, and other equipment. An in-person goalie-equipment fitter can also help check borderline sizing and whether the pads, knee protection, skates, and gloves work together.
