You do not have to download the game during the giveaway: Epic says a claimed weekly game stays in your library even if you install it later. Rules differ by storefront and offer type, so check the specific offer rather than assuming every “free game” works this way.
Claim the weekly game before its deadline
Epic says a new weekly free game becomes available Thursday at 8 AM PT and can be claimed for seven days before it rotates. The live offer page is the authority for the title and its deadline; check the displayed countdown or end date instead of relying only on the usual schedule.

Open the Epic Games Store free-games page and select the current weekly giveaway.

Sign in to the Epic account where you want the game recorded. If you normally use an external sign-in option, use the same method and associated account used for earlier claims.

Enable two-factor authentication if it is not already active. Epic lists it as a requirement for claiming a weekly free game.

Check the offer’s title, platform, regional availability, and displayed expiry, then complete the on-page claim flow before the offer ends.

Confirm the game appears in your library or transaction history. Downloading is optional for retaining an Epic weekly giveaway once claimed.

Simply viewing the page or downloading a temporary build is not the same as completing a claim. If the promotion expires before you claim it, Epic advises watching for future offers; a missed limited-time giveaway does not become part of your account automatically.

Epic’s store distinguishes among weekly giveaways, free-to-play games, and demos. Those labels describe different access arrangements, not interchangeable promises of permanent access.

Weekly giveaway: A time-limited opportunity to claim a specific game for your account. Complete the claim by the offer’s deadline; after that, you generally need to wait for a future offer.

Free-to-play: The base game is listed as playable without paying for access, rather than being a temporary giveaway with the same kind of claim window. Optional purchases may still be offered. Steam likewise describes free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit card, while noting that in-game purchases may be available.

Demo, beta, or press build: A trial or event version may be removed when its access period ends and does not establish permanent access to the full game. Epic specifically cautions that limited-time versions do not grant permanent access.

For another storefront, read that offer’s own terms and deadline. Epic’s weekly claim process should not be treated as a universal rule for Steam, consoles, or other stores.

If the game is missing from your library
Work through these checks in order. Epic’s launcher labels and screens can change, but these are the relevant account and library checks identified by Epic support.

Check the account and sign-in method. Confirm the account email and external sign-in option match the account used to claim the game.

Refresh the library view. Reset library filters, include uninstalled games, refresh the view, and check whether the library is hidden.

Check platform compatibility. Confirm the game supports your operating system and the platform on which it was redeemed.

Check what was actually claimed. A refund may remove a title; a gift may have gone to another player; a beta or press build may have been temporary; and a retail code may have been revoked.

Contact Epic support if needed. If the transaction is recorded but the game remains inaccessible after these checks, consult Epic Games Player Support.
Library access is not the same as outright ownership
For a claimed Epic weekly giveaway, Epic support describes the game as remaining in your library permanently. The Epic Games Store End User License Agreement nevertheless says, “The Software is licensed, not sold, to you under the License.” It also describes rare cases in which software removed from the store may no longer be available for further download or access. “Added to your account” or “licensed for use” is therefore more precise than saying you own the game outright; applicable consumer rights can vary by jurisdiction.
