What “free and keep it in my library” actually means
A free-to-keep offer gives your account a permanent license for the base game. After a successful claim, you should be able to download it later without continuing a subscription. That is different from several other kinds of access that are often described as “free.”
- Permanent license: The base game is added to your platform account and remains available under that account, subject to the platform’s normal service terms.
- Trial: You can play for a limited period. When the time expires, you need to buy the game or maintain whatever access the offer requires.
- Subscription catalog access: A game can be playable while your subscription is active without becoming an owned item in your library.
- Free update or add-on: New levels, modes, characters, or other content may be free for people who already own the base game. The update does not grant the base-game license.
- Free bonus item: A soundtrack, cosmetic item, or other extra can be included at no charge while the game itself remains paid.
For this title, those distinctions are decisive. A page that says “free update” or “play with Premium” does not answer the question “Can I claim the full game and keep it?”

The current answer: no official free-to-keep claim was found
On October 13, 2026, the official sources checked did not show a live promotion granting the base game permanently at no cost. This is a time-scoped finding, not proof that no individual giveaway exists anywhere. Offers can appear, end, sell out, or vary by country without every store page changing at the same time.
The Steam listing presents the base game as a paid product. It separately identifies free bonus content, such as soundtrack items; those extras should not be mistaken for the game license. The publisher’s official game page likewise presents paid physical and digital Standard Edition options for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The promotion most often cited in searches was an official MSI bundle for selected PC cases and power supplies. It is historical context only. Its dates and conditions are recorded on the MSI promotion terms page.

All of those dates have passed, including the April 24, 2026 Steam-code activation deadline. If you already obtained a code during the valid period, the only authoritative answer about its status is the promotion’s terms and the platform’s redemption system. A code that was never activated by the stated deadline should be treated as expired unless the issuer explicitly confirms otherwise.
Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 free on Game Pass?
Xbox Wire reported that the game launched on Game Pass, Xbox consoles, and PC in April 2025. The same outlet’s December 11, 2025 article announced a free game update: Xbox Wire announcement. That announcement supports launch-era subscription availability and the existence of free additional content, but it does not confirm the game’s current Game Pass catalog status in October 2026.

Even when a title is in a subscription catalog, “playable with Game Pass” is not the same as “owned permanently.” Access normally depends on an active subscription and on the title remaining in the catalog. If you cancel, or if the game leaves the catalog, the subscription entitlement may stop even though your account still exists.
How to check the current catalog status
- Open the Xbox app or the current Game Pass catalog for your country.
- Search for the exact title and confirm that the listing says it is included in your specific plan, rather than showing only a store purchase option.
- Read the current platform and region labels; PC and console catalogs can differ.
- Look for a purchase option separately. A purchase button indicates a paid license, not a free-to-keep claim.
Because the cited Xbox announcement does not provide a present-day catalog guarantee, check the live listing immediately before subscribing or assuming that you can continue playing without buying the game.
What the PlayStation Plus Premium listing provides
The US PlayStation product page describes a two-hour full-game trial for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. A timed trial lets you sample the complete game for the stated period; it does not add a permanently owned copy to your library.

Trial terms and catalog availability can differ by country. A PlayStation account in another region may show a different offer, no trial, or a different subscription tier. Check the store page associated with your account rather than relying on a screenshot from another country.

When the two-hour allowance ends, continued access requires whatever the current listing specifies, such as purchasing the game or retaining an eligible subscription. The trial timer is not a claim deadline for a permanent license, and starting the trial does not convert the game into an owned item.
Why a “free update” is not a free game
Several official announcements use the word “free” for new content. That wording concerns owners’ updates, not the base-game license.
On December 11, 2025, PlayStation Blog quoted Sandfall Interactive CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche: “As a show of thanks, we’re dropping a major content update to the game on PS5 right now (for free!).” Read in context, the quote describes additional PS5 content for players who have the game. It does not say that the base game is being distributed without charge. The announcement is at PlayStation Blog.
The game’s own news page also says that a free update was rolling out across platforms and regions: official game news. Xbox Wire’s update announcement uses the same distinction. Updates can be valuable and substantial, but they attach to an existing game entitlement. Downloading an update does not create that entitlement for an account that never bought or otherwise claimed the game.

How to verify and claim a legitimate future offer
There is no live free-to-keep claim confirmed in the sources above. These steps are for checking a future offer without confusing a trial, subscription, or add-on with ownership.
- Start with the official store or promotion page. Use the platform store, the publisher’s page, or the named hardware-promotion page. Treat search-result snippets, reposted images, and affiliate headlines as leads only.
- Identify the exact edition and platform. Confirm whether the reward is the base game, a Standard Edition, a soundtrack, or downloadable content. Check whether it applies to Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC through a specific launcher.
- Check the geography. Read the eligible countries or regions and make sure the account, purchase, and redemption country meet the terms. The expired MSI offer, for example, required the claim to be made in the country where the qualifying product was purchased.
- Check every date. Promotions can have separate purchase, registration, claim, and code-activation deadlines. Write down the earliest deadline that affects you; a code can be unusable even if the promotional page is still visible.
- Check eligibility and stock. Look for required hardware models, subscription tiers, proof of purchase, product registration, age limits, and “while supplies last” language. “Selected products” never means every product in a brand’s range.
- Read the ownership wording. “Add to library,” “redeem a game code,” or “permanent license” indicates ownership. “Trial,” “limited-time access,” “included with subscription,” and “free update” indicate a different benefit.
- Redeem only through the stated platform. Follow the promotion’s own redemption instructions and sign in to the account where you want the license. Do not submit a code to a different region or account on the assumption that it can be transferred later.
- Confirm the result. After redemption, open your platform library and verify that the base game appears as owned or permanently claimed. A download button alone can also appear for trials and subscription items, so inspect the entitlement details.
If any condition is unclear, contact the promotion issuer or platform support before buying hardware, paying for a subscription, or sharing an account credential. A legitimate offer should state its issuer, eligible regions, dates, and redemption method.

If you want to play immediately and no new free-to-keep promotion is active, the straightforward route is a normal purchase. The official Bandai Namco page lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and presents the Standard Edition in physical or digital form. Country and edition filters on that page matter: price, stock, and available formats vary by market.
The Steam store page is another paid route for the PC version. Its displayed price and included items can change, so read the current listing before checkout. A physical PS5 Standard Edition is also a valid paid product where stocked. None of these purchases is required to obtain a free code; they are alternatives when you decide that immediate ownership is worth the price.

Common misleading claims and how to resolve them
“The game is free” in a search result
Open the linked official page and look for the benefit type. The phrase may refer to an update, a trial, or subscription inclusion. Compare it with the store’s ownership label before signing in or entering payment details.
A video still shows the MSI promotion
Check the dates against the promotion terms. The MSI purchase period ended May 24, 2025, redemption ended June 21, 2025 or when codes ran out, and Steam activation ended April 24, 2026. Those deadlines make the old bundle unusable as a current acquisition method.
The store offers “Play” but not “Buy”
“Play” can mean an active subscription or trial. Open the entitlement information and determine whether your account owns the base game or merely has temporary access. Canceling a subscription should not remove a genuinely purchased license; it can end catalog access.

An update downloads without a purchase
Updates are distributed separately from the license and may be free for existing players. Verify whether the base game is listed as owned on your account. A free update does not prove that the base game itself is free.
