First decide what you are actually seeing. Loose gray or white particles that move when the case is removed are dust and call for the least aggressive method. A darker mark that stays in place may be skin oil, adhesive residue, or another form of grime. A scratch, worn coating, or printed mark will not be removed by cleaning, and rubbing harder can make it worse.

A case may be woven fabric, silicone, TPU, rigid plastic, lined material, or a cover containing a battery or lights. Those materials do not share one guaranteed cleaner. Nintendo’s official procedure is to dampen a soft clean cloth with water, wring out excess water, and gently wipe the product. The important distinction is that the water goes on the cloth, not directly on the Switch 2.
If you already have a suitable clean cloth, there is no need to buy alcohol wipes, a special brush, compressed air, or a case-specific cleaner for this basic task. Those products are not established as Nintendo’s recommendation for removing dust under a case.
Step-by-step: remove dust from under the case
- Inspect before wiping. Look along the back, corners, rails, buttons, vents, and the areas where the case contacted the console. If you see sand or another hard particle, lift it away with the cloth rather than dragging it across the finish.
- Wipe loose dust with a dry cloth. Use light strokes over the exposed exterior. Work from the cleaner area toward the edge so dust leaves the surface instead of being pushed into a seam.
- Use a dampened corner only for remaining grime. Put a small amount of clean water on one corner of the cloth, then wring it until no water can drip or run. Gently wipe the affected surface.
- Finish with a dry section. Immediately use a dry part of the cloth to remove remaining moisture and loosened residue.
- Check edges and contact points again. Rotate the console under good light and inspect the places that were covered by the case. Stop if debris appears to be inside the console rather than on an accessible surface.
- Set the console aside to dry. Do not put it back in the case or reconnect power until every visible surface is completely dry.
Use gentle pressure throughout. The goal is to lift dust, not polish the surface aggressively. Repeated hard rubbing can move grit around and may mark a finish or a printed area.
Work in a clean area away from food, sand, pet hair, and loose packing material. As the case is removed, brush or shake dust onto the table rather than over the console. If the manufacturer provides no care information, the evidence-supported fallback is conservative: clean the empty case with a dry, soft cloth, and do not introduce water or chemicals until the material’s instructions confirm that they are allowed. Never wash the case together with the console.
For a replacement or a different cover, compare construction before comparing cleaning claims. A fabric carrying pouch has different seams and lining from a fitted shell. A shell that leaves the ports open can still collect particles around those cutouts. A case with electronics requires its own power and moisture precautions. Material and construction matter more than a generic label such as “protective” or “washable.”

- Read the sewn-in label or the case maker’s instructions.
- If only dry cleaning is specified, stay with a dry cloth and the stated method.
- If washing is permitted, follow the exact water temperature, detergent, agitation, and drying directions from the maker.

Nintendo’s general handheld-care guidance mentions approximately 70% alcohol for disinfection when it is applied lightly to a soft cloth. That is a disinfecting instruction, not a requirement for routine dust removal. For dust under a case, do not escalate to alcohol when a dry cloth or a barely damp water-only cloth is sufficient.

Also, Nintendo’s safety guidance warns against peeling the screen’s antiscattering adhesive film. A film on the screen is not removable dust, and lifting it can create a separate problem. Clean the accessible surface gently instead of trying to peel, scrape, or lift anything that appears bonded to the display.
Drying and putting the case back on
- Leave the console outside the case after wiping.
- Use a dry section of the cloth to remove visible moisture.
