Turn off your Xbox controller, disconnect its cable or charging connection, then wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with a little mild soap and water, or use a premoistened disinfectant wipe. Never spray, pour, or apply liquid directly to the controller.
What you need
- A soft, lint-free cloth; microfiber is a suitable option.
- If a dry wipe is not enough: a little mild soap and water, or a premoistened disinfectant wipe.
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Console Safety & Repair Instructions say, “Don’t apply liquids directly to your console or controllers.” The guide permits a cloth dampened with a little mild soap and water, or premoistened disinfectant wipes.
How to clean the controller
- Turn it off and disconnect it. Unplug any USB cable or charging connection before wiping. This is a cautious step for cleaning the controller; Microsoft’s guide gives its explicit power-off and wall-disconnection direction for the console.
- Wipe the exterior. Use a soft, lint-free cloth, such as microfiber. Wipe gently rather than scrubbing.
- Use a slightly damp cloth only if needed. Dampen the cloth with a little mild soap and water, or use a premoistened disinfectant wipe. Do not spray or pour liquid onto the controller.
- Keep moisture away from openings and seams. Do not let liquid run into buttons, ports, or other gaps. Set the controller aside until its exterior is dry before reconnecting it.
How often to clean it
Microsoft suggests cleaning every 3–6 months or whenever needed. That interval is practical maintenance guidance from the company, not a scientific finding; the retrieved guide does not state a publication or revision date.
Can you use alcohol on an Xbox controller?
Do not treat isopropyl alcohol as a general-purpose cleaner for every Xbox controller. Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 repair guide mentions isopropyl alcohol for particular repair work, such as removing adhesive residue from a top case that has been removed. That is a repair instruction, not a blanket recommendation to wipe controller surfaces with alcohol.

When routine wiping is not enough
Microsoft’s general cleaning guidance covers controllers but does not establish material compatibility for every Xbox model, third-party controller, or specialty finish. For an unusual coating or finish, check the instructions for that exact model before using a cleaner. Sticky buttons, heavy contamination, or liquid that has entered the controller may require model-specific support or repair; exterior wiping does not address an internal fault.
The Elite Series 2 repair guide also cautions that opening and repairing electronics should be done only by people with appropriate knowledge, experience, and tools. Do not open the controller as part of ordinary cleaning.
