You can’t dye Elytra, add a banner pattern, or apply an armor trim to them through a documented vanilla crafting or workstation method. Without mods, the supported ways to change their appearance are to wear a cape or use a compatible resource pack. A cape changes the look of your worn Elytra; a resource pack replaces the texture shown by your game.
Can you dye, banner, or trim Elytra in vanilla Minecraft?
The reviewed official sources do not document a vanilla method to dye Elytra, apply a banner design with a loom, or use an armor trim on them. Minecraft Bedrock 1.19.80’s notes list helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots as armor-trim-compatible items—not Elytra. Bedrock 1.19.80 release notes are the relevant official reference.
Requests on Minecraft Feedback for dyeable or banner-pattern Elytra are suggestions, not evidence of an available feature or recipe. Minecraft Feedback
Option 1: Wear a cape
If you have a cape, wearing it changes the appearance of your Elytra to match the cape’s design, according to the Minecraft Wiki. This is a visual effect of the cape, not a way to choose arbitrary colors, place a banner pattern, or edit the Elytra itself.

Option 2: Use a compatible resource pack
A resource pack can replace the Elytra texture without changing the item’s gameplay behavior. In Java Edition, Mojang’s Snapshot 24w36a documentation describes custom equipment appearances, including a player’s custom Elytra texture. Minecraft Java Snapshot 24w36a notes
Java Edition: check the game version
Mojang’s Java 1.21.2 release notes give the Elytra texture location as textures/entity/equipment/wings/elytra. Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.2 notes A pack made for a different version may use an outdated location or format, so choose one explicitly compatible with your current game version.
Bedrock Edition: use a Bedrock pack
Bedrock also supports resource packs and texture customization, but pack format and installation steps vary by device and platform. Microsoft’s documentation covers converting texture packs to the Bedrock resource-pack format. Microsoft Learn: Converting texture packs Use a Bedrock-compatible pack and follow instructions for your platform; a Java pack is not automatically compatible with Bedrock.
Which option should you choose?
| Route | What you need | What changes | Compatibility and sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape | A cape available to your character | The worn Elytra appearance matches the cape | Depends on having a cape; multiplayer visibility is not established for every edition and setup by the sources cited here. |
| Resource pack | A pack compatible with your edition, game version, and platform | The texture your game uses for Elytra | Java and Bedrock pack formats differ. Multiplayer visibility depends on edition, server, and pack arrangements; it is not guaranteed here. |
What a resource pack does—and does not do
A resource pack changes the game assets used to display Elytra; it does not add a dyeing recipe, banner interaction, armor-trim slot, or gameplay effect. It is therefore a no-mod way to customize what the player’s client renders, rather than an in-game crafting customization.
