Turn off your Xbox Series X and unplug it from the wall. Then gently wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth, lightly dampened with a little mild soap and water, or use a premoistened disinfectant wipe. Never pour or spray liquid onto the console. Microsoft’s general recommendation is to clean it every 3–6 months or whenever needed.
What can I use to clean my Xbox Series X?
Microsoft recommends either of these options in its Xbox Series X Console Safety & Repair Instructions:
- A soft, lint-free cloth—microfiber works well—dampened with a little mild soap and water.
- A premoistened disinfectant wipe.
Use a microfiber cleaning cloth if you need one; Microsoft does not require a special Xbox-branded product. Keep moisture on the cloth or wipe. Do not apply liquid directly to the console or its controllers.
How to clean the console safely
- Turn off and unplug the Xbox. Disconnect it from the wall before cleaning. Microsoft’s separate 30-second disconnection precaution applies before opening a device for repair, not to an ordinary exterior wipe.
- Prepare the cloth or wipe. Lightly dampen a lint-free microfiber cloth with a little mild soap and water, or use a premoistened disinfectant wipe. The cloth should not be dripping.
- Wipe the exterior gently. Clean the console’s outside surfaces without pouring or spraying liquid onto it. Do not disassemble the console as part of routine cleaning.
How often should you clean an Xbox Series X?
Microsoft recommends cleaning every 3–6 months or whenever needed to remove debris and abrasive particles. This is the manufacturer’s general guidance, not a tested optimum for every room or usage pattern. Clean sooner if the exterior visibly needs attention. The guide is copyrighted 2024 and says its contents may change without notice, so consult Microsoft’s latest service and repair information for current instructions.

Do you need to open the Xbox to clean it?
No. Microsoft’s routine cleaning method is for the exterior; it does not give a routine disassembly schedule or prescribe opening the console to remove internal dust. Opening or repairing the device is separate work: Microsoft warns that it can involve electric shock, fire, device damage, and personal injury, and describes its repair instructions as intended for technically inclined people with repair knowledge and specialized tools.
If you suspect an internal problem or are considering opening the console, use Microsoft’s current service instructions. If you do not have the required skill, tools, or confidence, contact Microsoft or an authorized service provider. Microsoft identifies iFixit as a partner site for genuine replacement parts and service tools.
