To clean a wet-dry vacuum safely, disconnect its power, empty and wash the tank, clean the filter only as its manufacturer allows, and let washed parts dry fully before storage or dry pickup. Filter and wet-pickup rules vary by model, so check the owner’s manual before removing, washing, or changing a filter.
Clean a wet-dry vacuum step by step
1. Disconnect power before opening it
Switch the vacuum off and unplug it before emptying the tank or removing a filter. For a cordless vacuum, remove the battery. DEWALT’s instructions for the DCV580H specifically require the machine to be off and the battery removed before maintenance or accessory removal (DEWALT DCV580H/DCV580/DCV580HAM instruction manual).
2. Empty and wash the tank
Follow the manual to remove the power head, then empty the drum into a suitable container. If you have vacuumed liquid or wet debris, empty it promptly instead of leaving it in the tank during storage. RIDGID’s wet/dry vacuum manual recommends washing the drum thoroughly with warm water and mild detergent, then wiping it dry (RIDGID Wet/Dry Vac owner’s manual).
3. Clean and inspect the filter
Remove the filter as directed for your model. Depending on the filter, cleaning may mean gently tapping off dry debris or rinsing it with water. Do not assume every filter is washable, and avoid strong water pressure: it can damage filter material. RIDGID’s wet-application filter instructions call for moderate water pressure and complete drying (RIDGID: How to Use and Clean a Wet Application Foam Filter).

After cleaning, inspect the filter for tears, holes, or other damage. RIDGID warns that even a small hole can let substantial dust escape; replace a damaged filter rather than trying to keep using it. DEWALT’s instructions likewise say to replace a filter that is damaged, no longer works properly, or remains clogged after cleaning. Follow the replacement criteria for your own model, and choose a model-compatible wet/dry vacuum replacement filter.
Do not operate the vacuum without the filter it requires. The DEWALT DCV581H instruction manual puts it plainly: “Never operate without a filter in place.”

4. Dry washed parts before storage or dry pickup
If the manual permits rinsing a filter, let it dry completely before reinstalling it, storing it, or using it for dry debris where the manufacturer requires that step. RIDGID’s instructions specifically call for a dry filter before storage or dry pickup. A damp filter may be unsuitable for dry vacuuming; check the manual rather than guessing.
5. Wipe the exterior and store the vacuum dry
RIDGID recommends wiping the vacuum exterior with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild detergent. Store the vacuum with its tank and filter dry, and keep vents and exhaust openings clear as directed by the model’s manual. Do not apply a disinfection recipe from one model’s manual to another vacuum unless its manufacturer approves it.

Can you use the same filter for wet and dry pickup?
There is no universal answer. The required filter and procedure can depend on the vacuum model, tank capacity, filter type, and amount of liquid. Some manufacturers specify a wet-application or foam filter for liquid pickup; others give different instructions. Check the manual before removing a dry filter or fitting a wet one.
For example, RIDGID’s guidance for its WD4070 4-gallon vacuum says a pleated paper filter may remain for a small amount of liquid, while larger-volume pickup may require removing it or using the specified wet foam filter. That is guidance for that particular product, not a rule for all wet-dry vacuums. The product information also describes an automatic airflow cutoff at the liquid limit (RIDGID WD4070 product and Q&A page).

When comparing filters, check the exact vacuum model and tank capacity, intended use (dry dust, fine dust, or liquid), whether the filter is washable or disposable, and the manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement instructions. A wet-application filter for compatible vacuums is appropriate only when the manufacturer specifies it for your model and task.

Replace a filter if it is torn, holed, or otherwise damaged, or if it remains clogged or no longer works properly after the cleaning method approved for that filter. Match the replacement to the vacuum model and filter type; a filter that fits one drum size or series may not fit another. If the filter or another part is damaged or missing, consult the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than operating the vacuum without it.

Are collection bags useful?
A collection bag can help keep the drum cleaner and simplify disposal of dry debris, but it is an optional, model-specific accessory—not a wet-pickup substitute. RIDGID lists a compatible dust bag for its HD0318 3-gallon cordless vacuum. Check your manual for compatibility and use restrictions before fitting a bag; do not use one for wet pickup unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it (RIDGID HD0318 product page).
