The safest routine method is simple: shut the PlayStation down, unplug its AC power cord, and use a low-powered vacuum around the external vents. Wipe the plastic with a soft, dry cloth, then restore clear airflow around the console. On supported PS5 models, PlayStation also describes removing the covers and using a handheld vacuum beneath them; that is a model-specific step, not permission to dismantle internal components.
What PlayStation officially recommends
PlayStation’s basic guidance for dust is external cleaning with power disconnected. Its PS5 support page says to disconnect the AC cable from the rear and “use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that has accumulated in and around the air vents.” The page also tells owners to keep the vents unobstructed and to contact PlayStation if unusual noise or another problem remains after checking dust and airflow.

The model-specific advice differs slightly:
| Console and source | Supported cleaning action | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| PS5, current support guidance | Disconnect the rear AC cable and use a low-powered vacuum around the vents. | Persistent noise or faults may need PlayStation support; cleaning is not guaranteed to fix every cause. |
| PS5 CFI-71XX family, safety guide | After unplugging, use a handheld vacuum for dust buildup; the guide describes removing the covers and vacuuming dust underneath. | Use the instructions for the exact model and refit the covers correctly. Do not open internal assemblies. |
| PS4 CUH-2116AB / specified CUH-2100 family, safety guide | Disconnect AC power, use a low-powered vacuum at the vents, and wipe the plastic exterior with a soft, dry cloth. | The cited PS4 guide does not provide the same cover-removal direction as the cited PS5 guide. |
The PS5 support page is an Australian regional page, accessed October 13, 2026. The safety documents are manufacturer instructions for the model families named in their titles, so do not assume that a procedure shown for one revision applies to another.
Prepare the console and workspace safely
- Shut down normally. Use the console’s power menu rather than interrupting an active shutdown. Wait until the system is fully off, not in Rest Mode.
- Unplug AC power. Remove the AC power cord from the console before bringing a vacuum or cloth near the vents. Disconnect other cables if they make access awkward.
- Move to a stable, well-lit surface. A hard floor or table makes loose dust easier to see and prevents a nozzle from snagging on carpet. Keep the console supported in its normal horizontal or vertical orientation.
- Inspect the vents first. Look for a light surface layer versus compacted debris. Routine cleaning is intended for dust at the openings and, on the specified PS5 procedure, dust beneath removable covers.
- Use a low-powered or handheld vacuum. The official guidance names the power category, not a particular brand or console accessory. A soft brush attachment can help collect surface dust, but it must not be forced into an opening.
Do not clean while the console is running or connected to mains power. Keep the vacuum body and its cable from pulling on the PlayStation, and stop if a cover, vent grille, or cable begins to move.

Confirm the model before touching a cover
Model numbers matter because panel shapes, release points, and safety instructions vary. Read the identifier printed on the console or its documentation and match it to the guide you intend to follow. “PS5” or “PS4” alone is not enough to establish that a cover procedure applies. If the number is unclear, stay with surface-only cleaning. A wrong release motion can bend a panel or break a retaining clip even when the cover looks similar.
Routine surface cleaning: the safest default
This method works for the exterior vents of PS5 and the PS4 family covered by the CUH-2116AB safety guide. It does not require opening the console.
- Position the vacuum outside the vent. Hold the low-powered nozzle just over the dusty area. Let suction collect loose material at the surface; do not seal the nozzle tightly against the grille.
- Work around every accessible vent. Move slowly over the intake and exhaust openings and the surrounding plastic. Use several light passes instead of pressing harder. Never push the nozzle, a brush, cotton swab, tool, or any other object through a slot.
- Clean the surrounding shell. With the console still unplugged, use a soft, dry cloth to lift dust from the exterior. Do not spray liquid onto the console or the cloth.
- Check the result with a flashlight. If a thin film remains on the outside, wipe it rather than scraping at the grille. If debris is lodged deeper than the accessible opening, stop the routine procedure instead of trying to hook it out.
- Reconnect only after inspection. Confirm that no cloth fibers or loose debris remain around a vent and that the console and cable are dry before reconnecting AC power.
A low-powered handheld vacuum is an optional way to follow PlayStation’s stated method; no specialized “console vacuum” or specific vacuum model is required by the cited guidance. The goal is to collect loose dust, not to achieve a spotless interior or create maximum suction. If the nozzle cannot reach a recess without being forced, leave that recess alone.

PS5 cover access for dust underneath
The CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide goes beyond surface cleaning. It tells owners to unplug the AC cord, remove the covers according to the model instructions, and use a cleaning tool such as a handheld vacuum to remove dust buildup underneath. This can expose dust that cannot be reached from the outside, but it remains limited cover access rather than internal disassembly.
Use the exact cover procedure
- Identify the model number printed on the console before attempting removal. The cited guide is for the CFI-71XX family; do not use it as a universal instruction for every PS5 revision.
- Turn the PS5 fully off and disconnect the AC cable and other leads.
- Follow the official cover-removal sequence for that model, including the specified orientation and release points. If a panel does not release with the instructed motion, stop rather than levering it with a tool.
- With the cover off, hold a handheld, low-powered vacuum over the dust trapped beneath the panel. Keep the nozzle outside openings and avoid contacting fans, boards, connectors, or the power supply.
- Inspect the cover and its clips for dust, wipe it with a dry cloth, and reinstall it exactly as the model instructions show before reconnecting power.
Removing a cover can expose parts that are easy to damage or misalign. If you are unsure which PS5 revision you have, or the panel will not come off using the documented motion, use surface cleaning only or seek qualified service. Do not operate the console with a panel loose, partially clipped, or omitted.

PS4 cleaning: what the cited guide covers
The PS4 CUH-2116AB Safety Guide instructs owners to disconnect AC power before cleaning, use a low-powered vacuum when dust accumulates in the vents, and wipe the plastic exterior with a soft, dry cloth. It specifically warns against solvents and chemically treated cloths.
That document does not give the same cover-removal direction as the cited PS5 safety guide. Therefore, for a PS4 owner asking how to clean vents without damage, stop at the external vacuum-and-cloth method unless you have the service documentation and experience for the exact revision. A procedure for one PS4 chassis should not be treated as valid for every CUH model.

Why a PS4 teardown is not the next routine step
Seeing dust through a grille does not by itself justify removing screws or shields. Different PS4 revisions can place clips, cables, fan housings, and fasteners differently. Without the exact service sequence, it is easy to damage a connector, lose a screw, or reinstall a panel incorrectly. External cleaning is the supported first line; deeper access belongs in a separately planned repair.
Restore airflow after cleaning
Dust returns faster when the console cannot exchange air freely. PlayStation’s PS5 guidance recommends at least 10 cm of free space around the console. Place it where vents are not pressed against a wall, shelf divider, or other device. Avoid long-fibre rugs, which can shed material into an intake, and avoid narrow enclosed spaces that trap warm air.
- Keep the intake and exhaust sides visibly clear after reconnecting cables.
- Do not stack objects on the console or drape fabric over it.
- Route cables so they do not force the unit against a wall or block a vent.
- If you use a stand or shelf, verify that it does not cover the underside or rear openings.
- Leave room to inspect the vents without moving the console against a wall or another device.
The 10 cm figure is a manufacturer recommendation, not a published laboratory statistic. The cited guidance does not establish a universal cleaning interval, so inspect the vents when you see buildup rather than following an invented weekly or monthly schedule.

Choosing between the routine options
| Method | Access depth | Effort | Model-specific? | Risk profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface-only vacuum and dry cloth | External grilles and shell | Low; no panels removed | Works as the general PS5 and cited PS4 routine | Lowest when the nozzle stays outside openings and power is disconnected |
| PS5 cover removal and handheld vacuum | Dust beneath the removable covers | Moderate; requires correct panel handling | Yes; the cited instruction is for the CFI-71XX family and exact-model directions | Higher than surface cleaning if clips or panels are forced; still not internal disassembly |
| Internal disassembly | Fan, grilles, and internal debris | High; tools and teardown sequence required | Yes; every revision can differ | Highest, with possible damage to connectors, clips, boards, or power components |
For a normal dusty vent, choose the first row. The second is a narrowly defined PS5 option for dust underneath covers. The third is repair work, not a routine maintenance shortcut. A more expensive or stronger vacuum is not automatically safer; the relevant specification in PlayStation’s guidance is low power.
What not to do
Do not push objects into the vents
Forcing a nozzle, brush, pick, compressed-air straw, or improvised tool into a grille can move debris farther inside or contact delicate parts. External suction is the manufacturer-supported basic approach.
Do not assume compressed air is approved
The cited PlayStation documents do not establish a safe compressed-air procedure, pressure, nozzle distance, or orientation. They also do not say that blowing dust through a vent is equivalent to vacuuming it. Because that evidence is absent, compressed air should not be presented as a manufacturer-approved routine for these consoles.
Do not use solvents or treated wipes
For the PS4 material cited above, the safe exterior choice is a soft, dry cloth; avoid solvents and chemically treated cloths. The same conservative approach avoids spraying cleaners onto a PS5. If a product label calls for liquid, do not apply it to the console shell or vents.
Do not use high suction as a substitute for access
Increasing suction or pressing a household nozzle against a grille does not turn external cleaning into internal cleaning. It can stress a grille or pull at loose parts while still leaving compacted debris inside. If ordinary low-powered suction cannot collect what you can see, stop and choose qualified service rather than escalating the vacuum.

Do not open the power supply or other internal assemblies
Routine vent dust does not justify opening the power supply, removing shielding, or probing the motherboard. Those parts can retain hazardous energy and require service-level procedures. A cover that is explicitly removable is not an invitation to continue dismantling what lies underneath.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When cleaning does not solve noise or heat symptoms
A fan that remains unusually loud, a console that shuts down, or repeated overheating warnings can have causes other than visible vent dust. After you have unplugged the console, vacuumed the accessible vents, cleaned the shell, and corrected its placement, reconnect it and observe whether the symptom returns.
- Noise remains but the console operates normally: check that it is not touching a wall, shelf, or vibrating surface, then use the PS5 support route rather than escalating to an unverified teardown.
- The console shuts down, shows an overheating warning, or loses power: stop extended use and contact PlayStation support or a qualified repair professional.
- A vent appears blocked internally: do not fish for the obstruction. A technician with the correct model documentation can decide whether deeper service is appropriate.
- A cover will not refit: disconnect power again and review the exact model’s installation steps. Never force clips or operate the console with a loose panel.
- Dust returns immediately: inspect the placement, rug, shelf, and nearby debris sources. Repeated buildup can reflect poor clearance rather than a need for deeper disassembly.
PlayStation’s PS5 support guidance directs owners to contact PlayStation when noise or the underlying issue persists after the basic checks. Cleaning can remove an airflow restriction; it cannot guarantee that a worn fan, bearing, sensor, firmware condition, or other hardware fault is resolved.
Advanced PS4 cleaning is a separate repair task
For readers who deliberately need internal access, iFixit’s How to Open and Clean a PlayStation 4 guide describes a PS4 teardown for reaching dust and debris in the fan, grilles, and vents. Its listed equipment includes a dust blower, tweezers, cloth, and an anti-static brush.
