Power off and disconnect your controller, then start with a clean, dry, soft cloth. If grime remains, follow the cleaning instructions for your exact controller: manufacturers differ on whether a damp cloth, disinfectant, or chemicals are appropriate. Keep moisture away from stick bases, seams, buttons, and ports, and never spray or pour liquid onto the controller.
What you need—and what to avoid
- A clean, soft, lint-free cloth; microfiber is a practical option for gentle surface wiping.
- Only the cleaning liquid or wipe permitted by the instructions for your controller model, if a dry wipe is not enough.
- Avoid abrasive scrubbing and excess moisture. Do not assume alcohol or another solvent is safe for every thumbstick cap, grip, or coating.
Clean thumbsticks and grips safely
- Power down and disconnect. Turn off the controller and unplug its cable or disconnect it from power. Remove accessories only when the model’s instructions allow it.
- Wipe gently while dry. Use a clean, dry, soft cloth on the stick caps and grip surfaces. Avoid pressing grit into textured areas or scrubbing hard.
- Check the model-specific instructions before adding moisture. If a dry wipe does not remove the grime, use only the method the manufacturer permits. Apply any allowed moisture to the cloth, not directly to the controller.
- Keep liquid away from openings and moving parts. Use as little moisture as directed, and do not let it pool around the stick base, buttons, seams, or ports.
- Let it dry completely. If the approved method involves a damp cloth or disinfectant, wait until the controller is fully dry before reconnecting or playing.
How the instructions differ by controller
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo says to power off the console and unplug accessories before cleaning. For ordinary cleaning, it recommends a soft, clean cloth dampened with water and wrung out to remove excess. For disinfection, Nintendo permits a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol, applied lightly to a soft cloth. It warns, “Please do not pour liquids directly on the product. Do not submerge the product in water or other liquids.” Nintendo also says to ensure the product is completely dry before using it. These instructions apply to the Nintendo products covered by its guidance, not automatically to other brands. Nintendo’s cleaning and disinfecting guidance.
Xbox controllers
Microsoft advises powering off and disconnecting before cleaning. Its guidance describes a soft lint-free cloth dampened with mild soap and water, or premoistened disinfectant wipes; microfiber cloths work well. Do not apply liquid directly: “Don’t apply liquids directly to your console or controllers.” Microsoft’s Xbox cleaning and care guidance.
Keep that routine-cleaning advice separate from a repair instruction for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Microsoft’s repair guide uses isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab to remove adhesive residue from a top case during that specific repair. PlayStation DualSense
Sony’s DualSense manual directs users to wipe the controller with a soft, dry cloth and warns against solvents, other chemicals, and chemically treated cleaning cloths: “Do not use solvents or other chemicals. Do not wipe with a chemically-treated cleaning cloth.” It also advises against prolonged contact between the exterior and rubber or vinyl materials. There is no single answer for every controller. Nintendo permits a specified approximately 70% alcohol disinfectant for its listed products when applied lightly to a soft cloth; Sony’s DualSense manual says not to use alcohol or other chemicals. Microsoft’s alcohol-and-cotton-swab instruction is for removing adhesive residue during a particular Elite Series 2 repair, not routine thumbstick cleaning. Use alcohol only if the instructions for your exact model and cleaning task allow it.

When cleaning will not fix the surface
Cleaning can remove surface grime, but it cannot be assumed to restore a worn, damaged, or discolored coating. Manufacturers do not identify the precise polymer or coating for every thumbstick and grip, so a cleaner that is allowed for one model may not be appropriate for another. If the surface remains sticky or changes after gentle cleaning, stop rather than escalating to harsher chemicals or scrubbing.
