How to Clean Up Autoloaded Data in the WordPress wp_options Table

A practical, reversible workflow for auditing the largest autoloaded WordPress options, changing autoload flags safely, deleting only verified leftovers, and testing the result.

The safest cleanup is selective: measure the total autoloaded payload, identify the owner and request frequency of the largest options, then either leave needed values alone, disable autoload for values used only on specific requests, or delete only confirmed leftovers. Do not delete rows simply because their names look unfamiliar or their values are large.

What autoloaded options are—and why they affect performance

WordPress stores configuration and other key-value data in the wp_options table (although a site may use a different database-table prefix). Each row has an autoload decision. During WordPress’s all-options initialization, rows marked for autoload are loaded together so code can read them without issuing a separate database query for every setting.

That convenience is useful for values needed throughout a site, such as settings read on most frontend requests. It is wasteful for a value needed only on an occasional administration screen, a particular URL, or a scheduled task. The practical cost is the combined payload loaded into memory and processed on requests, not merely the number of rows. A small number of large values can matter more than many tiny settings.

“Autoloading too many options can lead to performance problems, especially if the options are not frequently used.”

There is no universal byte limit that defines a healthy site. The right target depends on the site’s traffic, code, object-cache behavior, hosting resources, and which settings are genuinely needed on most requests. Cleanup should therefore be evidence-led and reversible rather than based on a fixed threshold.

Prepare a rollback before touching the table

Changing an autoload flag is usually reversible; deleting an option is not unless you can restore it. Complete these checks before editing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Create a current database backup and verify that the backup can actually be restored.
  • Know which WordPress installation and database the command line is connected to. Run WP-CLI from the site’s WordPress directory.
  • Record the option names you intend to change, their current autoload state, and their owning plugin, theme, or core component.
  • Plan a small batch. Changing one or a few related options makes a regression easier to identify than changing hundreds of rows at once.
  • Make sure you can clear or refresh the site’s relevant object and page caches after the change.

A backup is not a substitute for understanding ownership. It is the recovery path if a plugin loses a setting, an administrator screen starts throwing errors, or a theme renders incorrectly.

Measure the current autoloaded payload with WP-CLI

Get the total size

From the WordPress installation, run:

wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes

This reports the combined size of options that WP-CLI classifies as autoloaded for the site. Keep the output as your before measurement. Re-run the same command after each cleanup batch rather than judging success from a single option in isolation.

WP-CLI documentation uses 33198 bytes in an example output. That number illustrates the command’s format; it is not a recommended target or a promise that a site at that size is healthy.

Find the largest values

List names and sizes with:

wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv

The command returns a CSV report containing each option name and its size in bytes. Sort the output in a spreadsheet or with your normal CSV-capable shell tools so the largest values appear first. Do not infer that the first rows are disposable: size identifies candidates for investigation, not permission to delete.

Check one option’s current flag

For a candidate, inspect its state directly:

wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME

Replace OPTION_NAME with the exact row name. Save the result before changing it. WordPress versions and command implementations have evolved, so an audit should not assume that every installation represents the decision with one literal string.

Identify what each large option belongs to

Names often contain a plugin or theme prefix, but naming conventions are not proof of ownership. A value may be a legitimate configuration blob, a cache, a migration remnant, or a setting left by software that is no longer active. An unfamiliar name alone does not establish that it is stale.

Trace the owner

  1. Search the active plugin and theme code for the exact option name and for calls that read, update, or delete it.
  2. Check the component’s documentation and uninstall routine. A documented cleanup procedure is safer than a manual row edit.
  3. Determine whether the option belongs to WordPress core, the active theme, an active plugin, an inactive component, or software that has been removed.
  4. Look at the value’s shape. Serialized arrays and structured configuration should not be edited by hand because a small syntax error can make the entire value unreadable.
  5. Establish where the value is used. A setting read on every frontend request has a different autoload decision from one read only on a plugin’s settings page.

Treat caches differently from configuration

A large option can be a cache generated by a plugin rather than durable configuration. Deleting a cache may be harmless if the owning software documents that behavior, but a cache can also be part of a plugin’s expected data model. Let the owner’s purge or reset feature remove it when one exists. If the value is active configuration, preserve it and change only the autoload decision when that meets the usage pattern.

Choose the least destructive fix

Use the following decision framework for every candidate. The key questions are whether the value is still needed, how often it is read, who owns it, whether the change preserves the value, and whether you can reverse it.

Finding Preferred action What happens to the value Risk and recovery
Needed across most frontend requests Leave autoload enabled Value and current loading behavior remain No cleanup is required; monitor the total payload as the site changes
Still needed, but only on limited requests Turn autoload off Value is retained; WordPress retrieves it when code requests it Usually reversible by restoring autoload; test every screen that uses the setting
Owned by an active plugin or theme Use that software’s settings, update, or uninstall routine The owner controls whether the value is changed or removed Manual edits can violate the owner’s schema; follow its documented procedure
Confirmed leftover from removed software Delete the specifically verified option after a backup Row is removed from the table Deletion requires restoration or recreation if the judgment was wrong
Core or site-identity setting Leave it alone unless the owning documentation directs a change Value remains unchanged These values can affect URLs, administration, and basic site behavior

Disable autoload while keeping the option

This is the normal fix when a setting remains valid but is read only on particular pages or requests. It changes the loading policy, not the stored value.

Use the WordPress API in code

WordPress provides wp_set_option_autoload_values() for changing autoload decisions without changing option values. A narrowly scoped call looks like this:

$result = wp_set_option_autoload_values(
    array(
        'OPTION_NAME' => false,
    )
);

Use the real option name in place of OPTION_NAME. Keep this in an appropriate maintenance routine or deployment step, not in code that runs on every request. Check the return value and confirm that the option’s owner still reads it correctly.

Use WP-CLI

The equivalent command is:

wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off

Despite the command name, this operation is being used to update the row’s autoload setting; it does not intentionally replace the option’s value. Run wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME afterward and retain the before-and-after output in your change notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When turning autoload off is appropriate

  • The option is needed only on a plugin’s settings screen or a small set of frontend URLs.
  • The plugin or theme still owns and understands the value.
  • You have tested the code path that reads it directly rather than relying on the all-options cache.
  • The site’s WordPress version and WP-CLI version support the command syntax you are using.

Do not use this as a substitute for removing a genuinely abandoned option. A stale row remains stale even if it is no longer autoloaded; it still occupies database space and may confuse future maintenance.

Delete only confirmed leftovers

Deletion is justified when you have evidence that the original software has been removed, no active code reads the option, the value is not a core or site-identity setting, and the backup is current. If any of those points is uncertain, retain the row and investigate further.

Delete one named option

For a verified leftover, use a narrowly targeted WP-CLI command:

wp option delete OPTION_NAME

Replace the placeholder with one exact option name. Review the name before executing. For several confirmed leftovers, process a small, explicit list and verify after each batch. Avoid broad wildcard deletion: a prefix can be shared by current and obsolete components, and a pattern can match a setting you did not intend to remove.

Why manual SQL is a poor shortcut

Direct SQL edits bypass WordPress’s APIs and the ownership checks that protect serialized values and plugin-specific schemas. They also make it easier to update the wrong site or delete multiple rows through an imprecise condition. Use the documented WP-CLI operation or the owning software’s cleanup routine instead.

Understand version-dependent autoload values

Older WordPress installations commonly represent autoload decisions with values such as yes and no. Newer WordPress APIs accept boolean decisions and document those legacy literals as deprecated for the newer interfaces. The exact stored representation and WP-CLI behavior therefore depend on the WordPress and WP-CLI versions in use.

When writing an audit or automation, do not filter for only one literal without checking the site’s version and current command behavior. Prefer the supported API or WP-CLI flag for that installation, then verify the resulting state with wp option get-autoload.

WordPress also has dynamic handling that can disable autoload for excessively large values when options are added or updated. An option that was previously expected to autoload may consequently be stored with autoload disabled after a write. This behavior is a reason to inspect the actual flag rather than assuming it from the option’s history or name.

Use Performance Lab for a deeper audit when needed

The WordPress Performance Team recommends the Performance Lab plugin when a deeper examination of large autoloaded options is needed. Treat it as an investigative aid, not as an automatic deletion tool. Ownership, request frequency, and compatibility still need to be confirmed before changing or removing a row.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  1. Run wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes again and compare it with the saved baseline.
  2. Re-run wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv and confirm that the intended option moved out of the autoloaded report or that the deleted row is gone.
  3. Refresh the relevant object and page caches so old all-options data does not distort the measurement.
  4. Exercise representative frontend URLs, the administration screens that use the setting, login/logout flows, scheduled tasks, and any integration that depends on the owning plugin or theme.
  5. Inspect PHP and application logs for notices, missing-setting errors, failed migrations, or fatal errors.
  6. Record the final autoload state and the test result for each changed option.

If a setting disappears or a page fails, first reverse an autoload-only change by restoring the previous flag. If the row was deleted, restore the database backup or use the owner’s documented re-creation process. Do not continue making unrelated changes while the cause is still unclear.

Common cleanup situations

The largest option is active plugin configuration

A large serialized configuration value may be entirely legitimate. If the plugin reads it on most requests, leave autoload enabled. If it is read only on a narrow route, disable autoload while preserving the value, then test that route and the plugin’s administrative screens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The option name belongs to a removed plugin

Confirm that the plugin directory is gone, no active theme or plugin references the name, and the former owner does not provide a cleanup or migration routine. Back up the database, delete only the exact verified row, and rerun the reports.

The value looks like a cache

Use the plugin’s cache purge or reset feature first. A cache that is regenerated by active code is not automatically abandoned, and deleting it manually can remove metadata the plugin expects. If the owner confirms that the cache row is disposable, remove it through the owner’s process or a narrowly targeted WP-CLI command.

The total does not fall after disabling autoload

Check the option’s flag again, clear relevant object and page caches, and repeat the report. A stale cache can continue serving the previous all-options payload. Also confirm that you changed the intended option name and that another large option was not the main contributor.

A new write unexpectedly changes the autoload state

Inspect the flag after the write. WordPress’s dynamic handling may disable autoload for an excessively large value. Review the code that updates the option and the WordPress version’s behavior before forcing a different decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable maintenance workflow

The following sequence works for a one-time cleanup and for periodic maintenance:

  1. Back up the database and verify restoration.
  2. Capture the current total with wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes.
  3. Export the name-and-size report with wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv and sort it for review.
  4. For each large candidate, run wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME, identify its owner, and determine where it is read.
  5. Leave frequently used configuration enabled.
  6. For valid but infrequently used settings, run wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off or use wp_set_option_autoload_values().
  7. For confirmed leftovers only, run wp option delete OPTION_NAME one named row at a time.
  8. Refresh caches, rerun both reports, test representative pages and administration screens, and inspect logs.
  9. Document what changed and keep the backup according to your normal retention policy.

Repeat the audit after major plugin changes, migrations, or cleanup routines rather than treating the table as permanently fixed. New installations and updates can add options, and an option’s use pattern can change as a site’s features evolve.

What a successful cleanup actually means

Success is not reaching a particular byte count. It means the all-options payload contains settings that are genuinely needed broadly, infrequently used values are still available without being loaded on every request, abandoned rows have been removed only with evidence, and the site continues to work after caches and representative requests are tested. Keeping that distinction prevents an aggressive “smaller is always better” cleanup from trading a modest memory saving for broken configuration.
