To clear a FiveM server cache safely, stop the FXServer process completely, locate that installation’s cache directory, delete the cache contents without touching resources/ or server.cfg, and start the server again. FiveM rebuilds the cache during the next boot, which is usually slower. The server cache is separate from each player’s client cache, and the exact location varies between txAdmin, hosted panels, frameworks, and self-managed VPS installs.
What clearing the cache actually does
FXServer stores temporary, generated, and downloaded data in a cache directory so it does not have to process every resource from scratch on every launch. Removing that temporary data forces the next startup to rebuild it. This can resolve stale resource files, assets that appear not to update, and some persistent loading problems after a resource change.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA cache reset does not reinstall FiveM, remove your resource files, or ordinarily erase character progress. Community guidance describes player characters, money, and progression as server-database data rather than cache data; nevertheless, make a database backup before maintenance and treat that claim as practical community guidance rather than a guarantee from official FiveM documentation.
There are two different caches:
- Server cache: stored with the FXServer data installation and shared by the server process.
- Client cache: stored on each player’s computer inside the FiveM application data directory.
Deleting one does not delete the other. If only one player sees an old texture or a failed download, start with that player’s client cache. If every player sees the same stale resource or the server log reports loading trouble after an update, investigate the server cache and resource deployment.

Before deleting anything
Cache paths differ by host, operating system, framework, and the way the server was installed. Do not paste a path from another server into a destructive command without confirming it first. Use this checklist:
- Tell players that the server will be offline and that the first restart can take longer.
- Confirm you are working on the intended instance, especially if the machine hosts several FXServer installations.
- Stop the server through txAdmin or the hosting panel and wait until it is fully offline.
- Make a copy of the server configuration and, if possible, a backup of the database and custom resources.
- Open the server’s data directory and identify the folder named
cache. Check its parent path before deleting. - Keep
resources/,server.cfg, framework files, and other core files untouched.
Files can remain locked while FXServer is running. On Windows, an attempt to remove them while the process is active can fail or remove only part of the directory.

Clear the server cache in txAdmin
txAdmin controls the FXServer process, but its data layout is not identical on every installation. Some guides place the cache under the server-data directory; another txAdmin-focused guide describes opening txData and then a framework base folder such as QBCoreFramework_[RANDOM_ID].base. Treat that framework example as installation-specific and verify the path on your own machine.
- Stop the process: open txAdmin, select the server instance, choose Stop, and wait for the status to show that the server is offline. Do not merely close the browser tab or terminal window.
- Open the data location: from the txAdmin profile or the service configuration, follow the path assigned to that instance. Look for the server-data directory and then a folder named
cache. If your setup usestxData, open the base folder belonging to this server and verify that itscacheis inside the same installation. - Inspect before deleting: confirm that the directory contains temporary cache data and that sibling items include your normal server files. If you see
resources/orserver.cfg, you are at the correct level but must not delete those items. - Remove cache contents: delete the files and subfolders inside
cache. Leave thecachedirectory itself in place if your panel expects it. Some hosting instructions also mention a siblingcache.olddirectory; it can be removed only after confirming it belongs to this server and is not being used for rollback. - Start from txAdmin: choose Start and watch the console. The first boot normally takes longer while resources are processed again.
- Test the updated resource: connect with an administrator account, check the resource that was previously stale, and review the console for new errors before announcing that the server is ready.
Clear the cache from a hosted game panel
Hosted panels often expose a file manager rather than the complete host filesystem. A path may look like /gXXXXXX/fivem/server-data/cache, but the account identifier and parent directories differ by provider. Use the panel’s own file browser or the startup configuration to locate the active server-data folder.
- Use the panel’s Stop control and wait for an offline or stopped state.
- Open the file manager and navigate to the active FXServer data directory.
- Open
cache. Delete its contents only; do not select the adjacentresourcesdirectory, server.cfg, or framework base files. - Leave unrelated instances and backups alone. A panel account can contain several servers with similarly named folders.
- Start the instance from the panel, then wait for the console to finish resource initialization before testing.
If the panel has a button labelled Clear cache, read its description first. Some buttons remove only temporary files, while others may reset broader server data. When the scope is unclear, use the file manager and the contents-only method above.

Clear the cache on a self-managed Linux or Windows VPS
On a VPS, the server owner is responsible for identifying the process and the correct data directory. Stop the service, screen session, Docker container, or launch script that owns FXServer before touching files. The command that starts the server usually reveals the data path through an +set svData argument, an environment variable, or a working-directory setting.

- Stop FXServer using the same service manager or launch script that started it. Confirm that no FXServer process remains before deleting files.
- Change to the verified server-data directory and list its contents. You should see a
cachedirectory alongside your normal configuration and resources. - Delete the contents of that cache directory, not the entire server installation. A commonly shared example is
rm -r $FXSERVERDATA/cache; replace the variable only after checking that it points to the intended instance. - Recreate an empty
cachedirectory if your launch script or permissions require one, then start FXServer normally. - Follow the startup log until resources have loaded and test the affected feature.
Before running a recursive removal command, print the variable or resolve the path manually. An unset or incorrectly set variable can make a destructive command target the wrong location. Test any script on a copy of the installation first.
Windows procedure
- Stop FXServer through its service, scheduled task, batch file, or console and confirm that the process has exited.
- Open the data directory shown in the launch configuration and verify the
cachefolder. - Delete the contents through File Explorer, or use a command such as
rd /s /qonly with the fully verified cache path appended. The command removes a directory tree without asking for confirmation, so check the path carefully. - Start the server and monitor the console for resource and permission errors.
Windows may refuse to remove files that are still open. If deletion fails, stop the service again, check Task Manager for a remaining FXServer process, and retry after it has exited.
Which files are safe to remove?
| Item | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Contents of the active cache folder |
Remove after a full shutdown | These files are rebuilt during startup. |
cache.old |
Remove only when verified as an old cache for this instance | Some hosting instructions create this backup-style folder; layouts vary. |
resources/ |
Keep | These are your installed resources, not disposable cache data. |
server.cfg |
Keep | This contains server configuration and startup settings. |
| Framework base folder | Keep except for its identified cache subfolder | Deleting the base files can break the framework or require a reinstall. |
| Database files or remote database | Keep and back up separately | Player and character data are not normally stored in the cache. |
There is no universal requirement to wipe the entire cache every time a resource changes. A Cfx.re forum discussion argues that the cache updates itself as resource files change and that a full wipe can waste startup time. Use a full contents-only clear when a problem persists or when stale generated data is a plausible cause, rather than making it a routine step after every edit.
What happens after the restart?
The first boot after a clear is slower because FXServer must regenerate temporary data and reprocess resources. That delay is expected; it is not evidence that the reset failed. Keep the console visible and look for a normal sequence of resource starts, followed by the endpoint becoming available.

If the server starts normally, connect and test the exact symptom that prompted the reset: a changed map, a streamed vehicle, a script update, or an asset that players were still seeing from an earlier version. If the symptom remains, the cause may be deployment, resource order, permissions, a client cache, or a script/database issue rather than stale server cache data.
When clearing the cache causes a new error
“Couldn’t load resource sessionmanager”
A Cfx.re forum report describes this error appearing after the FXServer cache folder was cleared and disappearing when the cache was left in place. That is a reported edge case, not a general rule that the cache must never be cleared. If it happens:
- Stop the server and read the complete startup error, including the path and resource name.
- Confirm that only the cache contents were removed and that the
resourcesdirectory still contains the expected files. - Check file ownership and permissions, especially after deleting files as a different administrator account.
- Restore the cache from your backup or reinstall only the affected server build if the error points to a damaged installation.
- Start again and determine whether the failure is specific to
sessionmanageror is part of a wider resource-loading problem.
The server will not start
- Verify that the cache directory exists and is writable by the account running FXServer.
- Check the launch path and
+set svDatavalue; a reset may have been performed in an inactive directory. - Read the first error in the log rather than the later cascade of “failed to start” messages.
- Restore the backed-up cache only as a diagnostic step, then investigate the underlying resource or permission issue.
The old content is still visible
- Confirm that the updated files were uploaded to the active server’s
resources/directory. - Restart the specific resource or the whole server according to your deployment process.
- Clear the affected player’s client cache if only one or a few players see the old asset.
- Check whether a reverse proxy or other caching layer is serving an older response.
Clear a player’s FiveM client cache
Client cache maintenance is performed on the player’s Windows computer, with FiveM fully closed. Community guides identify three folders to clear: cache, server-cache, and server-cache-priv. Forum posts place them under a data directory inside FiveM.app; an example path is %localappdata%FiveMFiveM.appdatacache. The exact location can move between releases, so use the current FiveM.appdata folder on the machine rather than assuming the example is universal.
- Exit FiveM and make sure it is not still running in Task Manager.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%FiveM, and openFiveM.appdataif that is where your installation stores its data. - Delete the contents of
cache,server-cache, andserver-cache-priv. If a folder is absent, do not create a replacement just for this procedure. - Do not delete
game-storage. A hosting guide warns that removing it can force a re-download of more than 20 GB of game files; the exact download size depends on the installed game and release. - Launch FiveM, reconnect to the server, and allow assets to download again.
Clearing the client cache affects that computer only. It does not repair a server-side resource that is missing or incorrectly configured, and it does not clear another player’s files.
Server cache versus client cache
| Question | Server cache | Client cache |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it? | Inside the active FXServer data installation; path varies by host and framework. | Inside the local FiveM application data directory, commonly under FiveM.appdata. |
| Who clears it? | Server owner or administrator. | Individual player on the affected computer. |
| What does it fix? | Stale or failed server-side processing and generated resource data. | Stale downloaded assets or a client-only loading problem. |

| When does it rebuild? | During the next FXServer boot. | As FiveM reconnects and downloads required client data. |
Automating a cache clear
Some administrators add a pre-launch cleanup to a Linux or Windows startup script. Community forum examples include rm -r $FXSERVERDATA/cache on Linux and rd /s /q on Windows. Automation is convenient for disposable test servers, but risky for production because a wrong variable, path, or permission can delete unrelated data.

If you automate the task:
- Use an absolute, validated path or verify the environment variable before deletion.
- Check that the target directory name is exactly
cacheand that its parent is the intended server-data directory. - Stop the previous FXServer process before the cleanup runs.
- Log the resolved path and the number of files removed.
- Test on a copied installation before enabling it on the live server.
- Do not use an old “clear cache on server boot” release from a forum as though it were current; one such Cfx.re release is marked discontinued.
For most production servers, manual clearing only when a persistent problem warrants it is safer than deleting the cache at every launch.
If you use a caching proxy
A reverse proxy has its own cache, separate from the FXServer cache. Do not copy the server’s cache directory into the proxy. After updating a resource that the proxy serves, clear the proxy’s cache directory and restart the proxy according to its configuration. A Cfx.re cookbook example uses an nginx restart, but the exact command depends on your proxy and operating system.

A practical decision order for common symptoms
| Symptom | First action | Next action if it persists |
|---|---|---|
| One player sees an old texture or model | Close FiveM and clear that player’s cache folders. | Verify the server resource and asset version. |
| All players see an old resource after a server update | Confirm the new files are in the active resources/ path and restart the resource. |
Stop FXServer and clear the server cache contents, then restart. |
| Server files appear locked | Stop through txAdmin or the panel and wait for a fully offline state. | Check for a remaining FXServer process. |
| Startup is slow immediately after clearing | Wait for resource processing to finish and inspect the log. | Investigate only if errors or a permanent hang appear. |
| Cache clear is followed by a missing-resource error | Check that resources and permissions were not altered. | Restore the backup and isolate the named resource or installation issue. |
How often should you clear a FiveM server cache?
There is no documented schedule requiring routine cache wipes. Clear it when a persistent, reproducible problem suggests stale generated data, after confirming that the updated resource files are actually deployed. Avoid treating cache deletion as a substitute for fixing resource manifests, startup order, permissions, proxy settings, or database errors. Keeping the cache between normal restarts reduces unnecessary processing and avoids the downtime of rebuilding it.
Because no current official Cfx.re or FiveM documentation page was found that specifies a universal cache-clearing procedure, treat community instructions as version- and setup-sensitive. The safest constant is the scope of the operation: shut down first, identify the active installation, remove only cache data, and verify the restart in the log.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing the server cache delete player characters or money?
The cache is separate from the server database where character and progression data are normally kept. Back up the database before maintenance, and never delete database files as part of a cache reset.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I clear the cache while the server is online?
No. Stop FXServer completely first; active files can be locked and a live process may recreate or corrupt data while you remove it.
Why is the first startup slower after a cache clear?
FXServer has to regenerate temporary data and reprocess resources. A longer first boot is expected; investigate only when the log shows errors or the process never completes.
Do I need to clear both server and client caches?
No. Clear the server cache for a server-wide stale-data problem and a player’s client cache for a problem limited to that computer. Clear both only when evidence points to both layers.
What should I do if I accidentally deleted game-storage on the client?
Expect FiveM to download the game files again; a community guide reports a download of more than 20 GB. Keep the client online until the files are restored, and avoid deleting that folder during future cache resets.
