To clear a bounty while keeping stolen items, pay a Thieves Guild Doyen: the reported cost is half your bounty. If you pay an arresting guard instead, expect to pay the full amount and lose stolen goods in your inventory to the Evidence Chest. Serving jail time does not clear the bounty.
Choose how to clear the bounty
| Method | Cost | What happens to stolen items? | Condition or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay a Thieves Guild Doyen | Half the bounty, according to Game8’s Oblivion Remastered walkthrough. | You keep them. | You must be a Thieves Guild member. |
| Pay the arresting guard | The full bounty. | Stolen items in your inventory are confiscated and placed in the Evidence Chest. | The walkthrough reports a possible no-payment outcome if the guard’s disposition is at least 90 and your bounty is below 1,000 gold. |
| Serve jail time | No bounty payment. | The walkthrough does not specify what happens to stolen items for this choice. | The bounty remains, and some skills may decrease depending on the sentence. |
| Escape jail | Does not clear the bounty. | Not established for Remastered. | Bethesda’s original Oblivion manual says the bounty remains after an escape; that manual is not specific to Remastered. |
Pay a Thieves Guild Doyen to keep stolen items
This is the reported option if you want a clean slate without surrendering stolen goods. You need to be a Thieves Guild member, and the walkthrough names two Doyens: Armand Christophe at the Imperial City Waterfront and S’Krivva in Bravil.

- Pay half the bounty, as reported by the walkthrough; your stolen items are kept.
The available walkthrough excerpt confirms the membership requirement but does not establish the exact quest progression needed to become a member or unlock this option.
Pay a guard—or try the reported disposition exception
If you settle with the arresting guard, plan on paying the full bounty. Stolen items you are carrying are taken and placed in the Evidence Chest. The walkthrough also describes a conditional exception: with the guard’s disposition at 90 or higher and a bounty below 1,000 gold, the guard may clear the fine and bounty without payment. This is a reported possibility, not a guaranteed outcome.

Why jail is not a bounty-clearing route
According to the Remastered walkthrough, serving a sentence leaves the bounty in place and can reduce some skills depending on the sentence length. Escaping is not a workaround: the original-game manual says a jail escape leaves the bounty active, though that evidence is not Remastered-specific.

The specific Remastered mechanics above are reported in Game8’s Oblivion Remastered bounty walkthrough. The guide does not provide a dependable publication date or identify the tested Remastered patch, so the figures and outcomes here should be read as the guide’s reported mechanics rather than independently verified behavior for every current build. The original-game manual is cited only for its escape-related background, not as proof of a Remastered-specific rule.
