Compare a cloud virtual machine (VM) running your own encoder with a managed live-encoding service by pricing the full workload, checking sustained network capacity to YouTube, and planning monitoring and recovery. A cloud host can keep an encoder running while your computer is off, but cloud hosting alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. There is no universal provider winner: the right fit depends on your source, target quality, need for transcoding or multiple outputs, region, total cost, and operations.

Start with the architecture your stream needs

A 24/7 YouTube stream sends an encoded feed to YouTube. The encoder settings determine the feed’s bitrate; the cloud service must run that encoder and sustain the required upstream traffic.

Cloud VM with a self-managed encoder

A VM is a general-purpose cloud computer where you install and supervise an encoder. It can suit a looped file, camera feed, or generated scene when you want control over the encoding workflow. You are responsible for keeping the encoder process alive, monitoring it, and arranging restarts and fallback behavior.

Managed live encoding

A managed service handles live ingest and encoding or transcoding according to its product model. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is one example. Its billing model charges for active channels and configured input and output streams, so it is not equivalent to renting a bare VM. Consider it when managed ingest, transcoding, or multiple outputs are part of the requirement.

Managed continuous playout

For a pre-recorded video loop that should stay live without a home computer running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. See StreamNeo.

Set the YouTube encoder target before choosing a VM

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The documented RTMP/RTMPS path supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends testing before a live event, including representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health and messages. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance provides the settings and current recommendations.

The following are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not measured minimums for every scene. Test with your actual content and settings.

These figures describe the encoder feed, not the cloud VM’s guaranteed throughput. Allow practical headroom beyond the selected bitrate and check the specific VM’s sustained egress capacity and route to YouTube.

Use RTMPS for the ingest path

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. It is RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; the documented setup uses the correct RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and SNI hostname. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation calls RTMPS “a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide for connection details.

Compare capacity, region, and route—not just a headline network rate

Network throughput is a capacity constraint separate from its price. A provider’s maximum network figure is not a promise that your chosen VM will sustain that rate to YouTube. Google Cloud says limits vary by VM series, machine type, and whether the destination is routable within or outside the VPC; actual performance can be lower than documented maxima. Microsoft also allocates network bandwidth by VM size and notes that VMs on shared host hardware fairly share capacity.

  • Choose a region suitable for the workload, then check the VM type’s egress limits and applicable per-flow or route constraints.
  • Test the complete path to YouTube using the selected resolution, codec, bitrate, and representative content.
  • Monitor stream health during the test; a VM’s published maximum does not establish real-world sustained upload performance.

Provider documentation: Google Cloud Compute Engine network bandwidth and Microsoft’s Azure VM network throughput guidance.

Build the full recurring cost, not a VM-only estimate

For a self-managed VM, include continuous compute for every hour in the billing month, outbound data transfer, storage, monitoring, backups or failover resources, and any related services. Confirm current rates for the chosen region and terms; a published allowance or free traffic route does not mean every cloud operation is free.

Outbound transfer can dominate a continuous feed

Google Cloud’s network pricing page lists no charge for VM data transfer to specified Google products including YouTube. This applies to the documented traffic and current terms, not every network operation or cloud service. Check Google Cloud’s network pricing terms.

AWS’s EC2 pricing page states that customers receive 100 GB of internet data transfer out free each month, aggregated across eligible AWS services and regions, with China and GovCloud exclusions. At a continuous 8 Mbps, encoded video payload alone is about 2.6 TB over 30 days, calculated from bitrate multiplied by seconds and before protocol overhead. That is a simple calculation, not an AWS-published statistic; the allowance is small relative to that illustrative stream volume. Check the AWS EC2 pricing page and the exact region’s current terms before estimating cost.

Model managed encoding by active time and configured streams

Google Cloud Live Stream API billing is based on active channel time: a channel is active in any state other than STOPPED or STOPPING, even without input. After a ten-minute minimum, duration rounds up to a minute. The following published rates are for US-central1; rates vary by region and configured resolution and codec. The service has no free usage tier. These are input and output charges for managed encoding, not VM prices. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

Stream type H.264 SD H.264 HD H.264 UHD H.265 SD H.265 HD H.265 UHD
Input, per hour $0.07 $0.14 $0.85 $0.28 $0.42 $0.42
Output, per hour $0.22 $0.45 $1.50 $0.88 $1.35 $3.00

For a continuous managed channel, model every active hour and each configured input and output at the applicable region, resolution, and codec rate. More outputs and higher resolutions can materially change the total.

Plan for recovery as part of the architecture

Hosting an encoder in the cloud does not itself ensure an unbroken broadcast. For a VM, decide how the encoder process will be supervised and restarted, how failures will be detected, and what fallback source or instance will take over. Test the restart and fallback path rather than assuming it works. Managed encoding changes who operates the encoding layer, but compare the actual recovery behavior and monitoring offered for the service you choose.

YouTube’s API supports a continuous 24/7 broadcast with another broadcast resource attached to the same stream. This allows a separate interview video to be attached without stopping the continuous feed; consult the YouTube Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams for the resource model.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Source: Is the input a looped file, camera feed, or generated scene? Does it need transcoding?
  • Output: What resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate will YouTube receive? Do you need more than one output?
  • Capacity: Can the selected VM type and route sustain the bitrate with headroom? Have you run an end-to-end test?
  • Total cost: Have you included full-month compute, transfer, storage, monitoring, backups or failover, or all managed input/output charges?
  • Operations: Who monitors stream health, restarts failed processes, and tests fallback behavior?
  • Region and terms: Are you using current prices and network limits for the actual region and product configuration?

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo replaces the self-managed encoder setup with three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required; after that, Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
