How to Compare Edge Rushers Using Pressure Rate, Sacks, and Run Defense

Compare edge rushers on three separate axes: pressure rate for disruption frequency, sacks for finishing, and a clearly defined run-defense metric for work against the run. Use the same season, competition, data provider, snap definitions, and minimum opportunity threshold for every player, then add pass-rush volume, run-defense snaps, alignment, and blocking context. A sack total alone cannot tell you who creates pressure most consistently, and pressure statistics cannot establish run value.

What the three measurements actually tell you

An edge rusher can be effective without producing a sack on every successful rush. Pressure rate measures how often the player affects the quarterback on pass-rush opportunities. Sacks record the subset of those plays in which the quarterback is brought down before the pass. Run defense is a separate assignment, so it needs a run-specific statistic and a run-play denominator.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Axis Question it answers What must accompany it
Pressure rate How frequently does the rusher create a qualifying disruption on a pass-rush snap? Pass-rush snaps, pressure total, provider definition, and season
Sacks How often did the disruption finish with the quarterback down? Pressure total, quarterback-hold-time context, and attribution rules
Run defense How often does the defender stop or disrupt a run under a stated definition? Run-defense snaps, run metric definition, alignment, and role
Context How difficult and how representative were the opportunities? Chips, double teams, blocker matchups, coverage duties, and sample size

Keep the categories separate before combining them into a conclusion. A player can lead in pressure efficiency, another can lead in finishing, and a third can offer the stronger run contribution. Calling one the better edge requires stating which of those outcomes matters most for the role being evaluated.

Set fair comparison conditions first

Before looking at a leaderboard, fix the conditions under which every player will be measured. Otherwise, apparent differences can come from data collection rather than performance.

Choose the season and competition

Specify the season and whether the sample is regular-season play, postseason play, or both. Do not mix a full regular-season sample for one player with a partial-season or postseason-only sample for another. The cited NFL Next Gen Stats examples include historical definitions and a 2025 season example; they do not establish current 2026 edge-rusher leaders.

Use one provider and one definition

Pressure is not a universal box-score event. NFL Next Gen Stats defines pressure as a pass-rush play in which a defender affects the quarterback before the throw, using a pressure-probability model. Its model counts pressure probability above 75 percent and includes sacks, quarterback hits, hurries, and other qualifying outcomes. A charted pressure from another provider may use different film rules, tracking inputs, or attribution. Do not place the two percentages in the same ranking as though they measured the same event.

Set an opportunity threshold

Rates from a handful of rushes are unstable. Establish a minimum number of pass-rush snaps and apply it to every player in the comparison. The threshold should be stated with the table or player cards, not hidden in a footnote. Also show each player’s actual snap count so readers can distinguish a sustained rate from a small-sample result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record both pass and run denominators

For each player, collect pass-rush snaps, pressure rate, pressure total, sacks, run-defense snaps, and the selected run statistic. A rate without its denominator hides how much evidence supports it. Keep pass-rush snaps and run-defense snaps separate: a defender may rush on one play and perform a different assignment on another.

Pressure rate: the efficiency starting point

The formula

NFL Next Gen Stats states: “Pressure rate is the total number of pressures divided by the total number of pass-rush snaps.” In formula form:

pressure rate = pressures ÷ pass-rush snaps

The percentage answers a frequency question. It does not tell you how many total disruptions a player generated, whether those pressures came quickly, or how often a quarterback was actually sacked. Always print the pressure total and pass-rush snap count next to the percentage.

How to read the 10.3 percent reference

NFL Next Gen Stats gives 10.3% as an average pressure rate for pass rushers in its pressure-probability explainer. That figure is a general benchmark from that article, not a current-season, edge-only cutoff. If you quote it, identify the source and its scope; do not label every rate above 10.3% elite or treat the number as a 2026 ranking line.

Why opportunity volume changes confidence

Suppose two players have the same rate but one has substantially more pass-rush snaps. The larger sample gives the rate more opportunity to reflect performance across opponents, game situations, and protection plans. It does not automatically make the higher-volume player more efficient, but it makes a small-sample outlier less persuasive. Report the count instead of trying to disguise sample uncertainty with extra decimal places.

Quick pressure and pressure over expected

When the data are available, add timing and expectation measures. NFL Next Gen Stats defines a quick pressure as one occurring within the first 2.5 seconds. Quick pressure rate helps identify immediate disruption before a quarterback’s extended scramble or late pocket movement can affect the play. It still is not a pure individual-skill score, because alignment, scheme, coverage, and protection influence the opportunity.

Pressure rate over expected compares average pressure probability with pressure probability at the snap. It can show whether a defender produced more pressure than the initial situation predicted. Treat it as a companion measure, not a replacement for pressure rate, because it depends on the model’s assumptions and the information available to that model.

Time to pressure

NFL Next Gen Stats reports 2.9 seconds as the average time to pressure in its pressure-probability explainer. This is a source-specific reference, not a universal target for every edge player or season. If you use time to pressure, preserve the provider’s definition and show whether the value covers all pressures or only a defined subset.

Sacks: finishing production, not the whole rush

Sacks are valuable because they end the play with the quarterback down, often removing a chance to complete a pass or continue a drive. They are also less frequent than pressures, so a sack total contains less information about all the rushes that affected the quarterback.

Put sacks beside pressure totals

A useful player card displays sacks, pressures, pressure rate, and pass-rush snaps together. This lets a reader see whether a sack total comes with frequent disruption or with a smaller number of high-impact finishes. Do not report sacks as a substitute for pressure rate.

Account for quarterback hold time

The NFL Next Gen Stats analytics team notes: “The opportunity of a defender to generate pressure directly depends on how long the quarterback holds onto the ball.” A quarterback who releases quickly can prevent a sack even when the rusher wins early. Conversely, a quarterback who holds the ball for coverage reasons gives rushers more time to reach him. A low sack total therefore does not prove that a player failed to win one-on-one.

Do not overuse sack-to-pressure ratios

It is tempting to divide sacks by pressures and call the result a finishing rate. That comparison can mislead when the sources use different sack attribution rules, when pressure totals include outcomes that cannot become sacks, or when the sample is small. If you present such a ratio, keep the source, definitions, and sample size identical and describe it as a descriptive conversion figure rather than a complete finishing grade.

Recognize the causes of pressure

A pressure can begin with a clean blocker defeat, but NFL analysis also identifies other paths: the quarterback may leave a clean pocket, or coverage and receiver separation may cause the quarterback to hold the ball until the rush arrives. Quick pressure, defined as arrival within 2.5 seconds, removes many of those late-play variables, but it does not remove every influence of alignment, protection, or scheme.

Evaluate run defense on its own axis

Pressure rate and sacks describe pass-rush outcomes. They cannot establish whether an edge defender sets the edge, defeats a run block, constricts a gap, or makes a tackle for loss. Use a run-specific metric and state exactly what counts.

Select and define the run statistic

Possible measures include run stuffs, run stops, run-stop rate, or a tracking-based run-stop measure. The choice matters less than consistency and definition. Explain whether the provider counts a stop by result, expected-value change, location, or another rule, and identify the denominator as run-defense snaps or another stated run opportunity.

Use the denominator with the result

A run count without run-defense snaps rewards players who happened to receive more run opportunities. A rate without the count can exaggerate a short stint. Display both, just as you do for pass rushing.

Interpret the 8.1 percent example correctly

NFL Next Gen Stats’ 2025 season article describes interior defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons stuffing rushers at or behind the line on 8.1% of run-defense snaps. This is an example of an explicitly denominated run-defense rate. It is not an edge-rusher benchmark and should not be used as a league-wide target for outside defenders. The example illustrates the reporting standard: name the player and season, define the event, and show the opportunity denominator.

Account for alignment and assignment

An edge player who frequently lines up wide, reduces inside, drops into coverage, or plays a spill-and-contain role may produce a different run profile from an edge who attacks the same gap on most snaps. Note alignment and assignment when the data provide them. Do not infer identical responsibilities from the position label alone.

Add blocking and role context

Raw rates are easier to interpret when the comparison shows who was asked to block whom and how often help arrived.

Chips and double teams

NFL Next Gen Stats says its matchup model identifies blockers, chip blocks, and double teams and can attribute pressures and sacks to individual blockers. Use those fields, when available, to explain whether a player faced unusual protection attention. A high rate against frequent doubles may carry a different contextual meaning from the same rate against isolated blocks, but neither context should be converted into an invented adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage and rush role

Some edge defenders rush on most obvious passing downs; others are asked to disguise coverage, drop underneath routes, or execute contain responsibilities. Fewer rush snaps can be a role feature rather than a lack of ability. Show the snap mix and describe the role before comparing rates.

Opponent and game-state effects

Protection plans, quarterback release time, score, down, distance, and opponent quality all affect opportunities. Keep the comparison within one competition scope and season, and use splits only when the provider defines them consistently for every player. Avoid presenting an opponent-adjusted conclusion unless the adjustment method is documented.

A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Define the scope. Write down the season, league or competition, regular-season or postseason inclusion, provider, and minimum pass-rush and run-defense snap thresholds.
  2. Build the pass-rush fields. Record pass-rush snaps, pressure total, pressure rate, sacks, and any available quick-pressure or time-to-pressure value.
  3. Verify the pressure definition. Confirm whether the provider uses tracking, charting, or a model. For NFL Next Gen Stats, note the pressure-probability framework and its qualifying outcomes.
  4. Build the run-defense fields. Record run-defense snaps and one consistently defined run metric, such as stuffs or run-stop rate. Include the event definition in the header or notes.
  5. Attach context. Add alignment, role, chips, double teams, blocker matchups, and coverage duties when those fields are available.
  6. Check sample stability. Flag players close to the snap threshold and avoid ranking tiny differences as meaningful.
  7. Separate the verdicts. Identify the pressure-rate leader, sack finisher, and run-defense leader independently before deciding which profile best fits the football role under discussion.
  8. State limitations. Name missing timing, attribution, or run-definition information rather than silently combining incompatible statistics.

How to read common player profiles

High pressure rate, modest sack total

This profile indicates frequent quarterback disruption without many completed finishes. Check quick pressure, quarterback release timing, pressure total, and whether the player was credited with hits or hurries that did not become sacks. Do not call the player a poor rusher solely because the sack column is lower.

Lower pressure rate, high sack total

This can reflect strong finishing on a smaller number of wins, favorable quarterback hold times, or a small sample. Check pass-rush snaps and pressure total before concluding that the player is more efficient. A high sack count with few total pressures may be less repeatable than a broad stream of disruptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strong pressure and strong run metric

This is the most balanced profile, but verify that both rates clear the same opportunity standards and that the run statistic is genuinely comparable across players. A favorable profile still needs role and blocking context.

Strong pass rush, weak run result

Do not let sacks obscure run responsibilities. Review run-defense snaps, edge-setting assignments, alignment, and the exact run event being counted. The player may be valuable in a designated passing-down role, but that is a different conclusion from calling the player an all-situation edge.

Strong run result, limited rush volume

A player may be a dependable early-down defender while receiving fewer obvious passing-down opportunities. Compare the player within the role actually used, and avoid treating a low pass-rush denominator as proof of either excellence or failure.

Frequent comparison errors and their fixes

  • Using sacks as the only pass-rush statistic: add pressure rate, pressure total, and pass-rush snaps.
  • Comparing rates from different providers: keep one provider and definition throughout.
  • Ignoring the denominator: print pass-rush and run-defense snaps beside every rate.
  • Calling every pressure a clean win: account for quarterback movement, coverage-related holds, and protection context.
  • Inferring run defense from pass-rush success: use a separately defined run metric.
  • Treating 10.3% as a current edge cutoff: identify it as the general NFL Next Gen Stats explainer average, not a 2026 league threshold.
  • Using the 8.1% Simmons example as an edge benchmark: it is a 2025 interior-defender example, not a universal edge standard.
  • Ranking tiny differences: use a minimum snap threshold and show raw counts.
  • Overstating current leaders: the cited examples do not verify a current 2026 leaderboard, so live rankings require current, consistently defined data.

How to present the final comparison

A clear table or set of player cards should include the following fields for every edge rusher:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Season and competition scope
  • Data provider and pressure definition
  • Pass-rush snaps
  • Pressure total and pressure rate
  • Sacks
  • Quick pressures or time to pressure, if available and consistently defined
  • Run-defense snaps
  • Run metric and its event definition
  • Alignment and role notes
  • Chip, double-team, and blocker-matchup context

After the table, write separate findings for pass-rush frequency, finishing, and run defense. Then explain the role fit: for example, whether the decision prioritizes immediate quarterback disruption, sack finishing, early-down run reliability, or a balanced workload. This structure prevents one eye-catching column from deciding a multidimensional evaluation.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The NFL Next Gen Stats pressure definitions and tracking framework support careful comparisons when the same source and scope are used. The framework includes historical pressure-probability data for every pass play since 2018, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. That availability does not remove the need to record season, role, and sample size.

The available season examples are not a current 2026 ranking, and there is no single standardized NFL edge-rusher run-defense statistic established here. A responsible comparison therefore labels every run metric, preserves its denominator, and avoids converting an interior-defender example into an edge benchmark. The result is more useful than a single composite number because a reader can see exactly what each player did, how often he had the chance, and which parts of the job remain role-dependent.
