Compare extraction games by asking what you risk when you deploy, what you must do to get out, and which threats can stop you. Then check solo and squad rules, how much preparation and progression matter, and whether the game is available to you and your group. “Extraction shooter” alone does not tell you whether a run is mainly a fight against other players, a cooperative mission against AI, or a mix of both.
Start with the question that defines the genre: what are you risking?
An extraction game asks you to leave a dangerous run with something worth keeping. That might be equipment you brought in, loot you found, an objective reward, or some combination. The key decision is whether to bank what you have by extracting or stay longer for a chance at more. PlayStation’s official Marathon page describes that trade-off as an essential skill: “Knowing when to push forward for greater loot vs when to bank what you’ve found by extracting is an essential skill.”

Before choosing a game, find out what happens in each of three situations: you extract successfully, you die before extracting, or you leave without completing the main objective. Those outcomes can make the same basic loop feel forgiving, tense, or punishing. Do not assume that every game treats carried gear and collected rewards the same way.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- On deployment: Identify what you bring into a run and whether it can be lost. In its official description, Marathon says defeat can cost the equipment brought in.
- During a run: Separate what you have found from what you have secured. A reward you are carrying may not count as banked until you reach extraction.
- On a successful extraction: Check exactly what becomes persistent currency, experience, equipment, or progress. Hunt’s official guide says extracted Bounty Tokens convert to Hunt Dollars and experience.
- On a failed or interrupted extraction: Look for the rules on death, leaving the area, and interruption. Hunt’s guide specifically covers extraction interruption, so do not treat reaching an extraction point as automatic success.
If official descriptions do not spell out a particular failure case, treat it as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with assumptions from another game. A concise explanation of the loss rules is more useful than a vague promise of “high stakes.”

Compare the threats, not just the label
The next question is who or what creates pressure while you are trying to complete an objective and leave. A game can emphasize rival players, AI opponents and environmental hazards, or a deliberate combination. That distinction affects how you interpret a dangerous encounter: another player may be pursuing the same reward, while an AI-focused mission may ask your group to coordinate against a shared threat.
| Example | Threat mix established by the official description | What that suggests you should investigate |
|---|---|---|
| ARC Raiders | Deadly machines and other Raiders threaten players. | Ask how you want to balance encounters with AI dangers against the uncertainty of meeting rival players. |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | The official beginner guide describes a bounty hunt involving clues, a boss, the bounty, and extraction. It does not establish a comparable measure of PvP intensity. | Study the objective and extraction rules, then use current official information or gameplay details to understand how other hunters affect a run. |
| Marathon | PlayStation describes both AI enemies and other players hunting rewards. | Consider whether you want to manage two kinds of opposition while deciding when to leave with what you have. |
| Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction | Ubisoft describes a tactical, cooperative PvE shooter against an evolving alien threat. | Consider it as a contrast if coordinated missions against AI are what you want; the cited description establishes cooperative PvE, not current population or update cadence. |
This is not a ranking of danger or difficulty. The official descriptions establish different threat models, but they do not provide comparable difficulty scores, player counts, loss rates, or match-duration figures. Decide which kind of uncertainty you enjoy rather than treating “more PvP” or “more PvE” as automatically better.
Check the objective and extraction loop
“Get in and get out” can conceal very different run structures. One game may lead you through a sequence of clues toward a boss and a bounty. Another may put the emphasis on surviving a mixed-threat world while deciding whether to keep pursuing rewards. A cooperative PvE title may organize play around tactical missions. Ask what you actually do between deployment and extraction, and what makes a run complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHunt: Showdown 1896: a bounty-led example
Hunt’s official beginner guide describes a specific Bounty Hunt sequence: equip a Hunter, investigate clues, locate and fight a boss, take the bounty, and try to extract. Its Bounty Tokens turn into Hunt Dollars and experience if extracted. That gives a new player a clear objective chain to evaluate: preparation leads to investigation, investigation points toward a fight, and the reward still has to be carried out.

The guide also covers maps, weapons, tools, consumables, traits, and the possibility that extraction can be interrupted. When comparing another game with Hunt, look for the equivalent details rather than comparing only the boss fight or the amount of loot. The question is how each title connects its objective to a successful escape.
ARC Raiders: a mixed-threat social example
The official ARC Raiders overview describes a multiplayer extraction adventure in a world threatened by machines and other Raiders. It supports play with a squad or as a lone ranger, and describes cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Its site lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW. The overview characterizes its mechanics as approachable, but that is the game’s own description, not independent evidence that it is easy or forgiving.
Marathon: a risk-and-progression example
PlayStation’s official Marathon page presents carrying equipment into danger, facing both AI and other players, and choosing when to extract as connected parts of the loop. It describes configurable Runner shells, faction contracts that unlock season-long benefits, crews of two or three, solo lobbies, a lone Rook option, and a ranked mode. These details make it useful to examine both run-level decisions and longer-term progression.
The page also describes Season 2 content and a Cryo Archive endgame zone with access requirements. Those are live-game details, not permanent genre rules; check the current official page for what is available before planning around them. The official page does not establish the precise access requirements, so do not assume them from this summary.

Rainbow Six Extraction: a cooperative PvE contrast
Ubisoft describes Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction as a tactical, squad-based cooperative PvE shooter against an evolving alien threat. It was released on January 20, 2022. The official platform list includes PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This makes it a useful contrast when the desired experience is coordinated PvE rather than a mixed player-versus-player and AI threat model. The cited Ubisoft page does not establish present-day player population, ongoing update cadence, or current edition availability.
Find out whether solo and group rules fit your plans
Do not infer team size from screenshots, genre conventions, or a friend’s experience in another title. Check whether solo is supported, whether solo play uses a distinct mode or lobby, and what group sizes can queue together. A game that supports playing alone is not necessarily promising the same matchmaking or encounter conditions to solo and grouped players.
| Game | Solo and team information established by the cited official source | What to verify for your group |
|---|---|---|
| ARC Raiders | The official overview describes playing with a squad or as a lone ranger. | Confirm current party-size and matchmaking details if your group needs a specific number of players. |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | The official guide describes solo, duo, or trio team settings. | Check the current queue and team settings that apply to the mode you intend to play. |
| Marathon | PlayStation lists crews of two or three, solo lobbies, and a lone Rook option. | Confirm how the intended mode handles your exact party size; the options listed are not interchangeable descriptions of one queue. |
| Rainbow Six Extraction | Ubisoft describes squad-based cooperative PvE; the cited page does not state a team-size range. | Verify current squad size and matchmaking before organizing a group. |
Platform compatibility is a separate check from team-size support. ARC Raiders’ official site links to PC storefronts, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW, and describes cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Ubisoft lists Rainbow Six Extraction for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but the cited page does not establish whether friends across those platforms can play together. Do not assume that a platform list proves cross-play.

Measure how much preparation and progression you want
Some players enjoy spending time between runs deciding what to bring; others would rather get into the next mission quickly. Compare what a game asks you to configure before a deployment and what can change over a longer stretch of play. These are not just menus to consider: when gear can be lost, preparation and progression shape the meaning of a failed run.

Loadout decisions
Hunt’s beginner guide provides concrete preparation categories: weapons, tools, consumables, and traits, along with the Hunter you equip. That is enough to tell a reader where to look when assessing its loadout commitment, but not enough to assign it a numeric complexity score relative to another game.
For any title, inspect whether a loadout is built from equipment, abilities, character options, or a mix, and whether those choices are made for every run or persist. Then connect the answer to the risk rules: losing a costly or carefully assembled kit matters more if a defeat can take the equipment with it.
Longer-term development
Marathon describes configurable Runner shells and faction contracts that unlock benefits for a season. That links character choice and between-run progress to a time-bounded progression system. The official ARC Raiders overview says a Raider can be shaped in identity and playstyle, but does not give comparable progression detail on the page reviewed. The available descriptions therefore support a comparison of what each page explicitly explains—not a claim that one game has deeper progression.

Use a practical comparison checklist before committing
Use this order when evaluating two or more games. It puts the most consequential questions—risk and run structure—ahead of secondary preferences.
- Write down your preferred threat mix. Decide whether you want rival players to be a central source of pressure, a cooperative PvE mission, or a mixture. Check what the official description actually confirms.
- Trace the failure stakes. Record what you bring in, what you can find, what you lose on defeat, and what is secured only by extracting. Mark unanswered rules as unknown.
- Describe the run objective in one sentence. For example, Hunt’s official guide describes investigating clues, fighting a boss, taking a bounty, and trying to extract. If you cannot tell what success asks you to do, find a current explanation of the mode before choosing.
- Match the group rules to your real party. Confirm solo support, team-size options, and whether your friends’ platforms can play together. Do not use “supports solo” as a substitute for checking the actual solo mode or lobby.
- Estimate the preparation you want. Look for the loadout categories, character choices, traits or abilities, and persistent unlocks that the official information identifies. Decide whether those systems sound engaging or like unwanted overhead.
- Verify access for your region and platform. Check current platform availability, regional access, price, system requirements, edition format, and cross-platform play on the relevant official storefront or publisher page. These details can vary and were not established comparably for the examples here.
- Leave unsupported comparisons blank. Do not substitute a numeric difficulty rating, player count, match length, or loss rate unless a current, named source reports it with a date and relevant region or conditions.
A compact note for each game can be enough: threat mix; loss rule; objective and extraction condition; solo and party choices; loadout and progression; supported platforms and verified access. This gives you an apples-to-apples basis without pretending the games share the same structure.
Check practical access separately from game design
Platform lists answer only part of the buying and playing question. The official information summarized here does not establish comparable current prices, system requirements, player populations, or exact retail edition formats for the games. Those facts need a current, region-specific check at the platform or publisher storefront. A platform’s appearance in a list also does not establish current stock, regional availability, or cross-play.
For ARC Raiders, the official site lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW. Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Extraction page lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. These are useful starting points for platform compatibility, not a complete current access comparison. For Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Marathon, confirm the platform and regional details on current official pages before making a purchase or arranging a group session.
Availability and player population are different questions. A game being listed on a platform does not tell you how many people are playing at a particular time or in your region. Likewise, an official game page that describes modes does not establish queue times. If population is decisive for you, use current, dated reporting that identifies what it measured; no comparable player-population figure is established for these examples here.
What this comparison method cannot tell you
Official pages and beginner guides can establish stated mechanics, modes, and platform lists, but they do not automatically support a ranking. The cited material supplies no useful named comparative statistic for difficulty, player count, average match length, or loss rate. It therefore cannot justify claims that one example is easiest, safest, most popular, or best overall.
Descriptions such as “approachable” should be read as the publisher’s characterization unless supported by an independent assessment with a defined basis. Similarly, a title’s stated support for solo play does not prove that solo play is easier or better balanced. For a decision that depends on those qualities, seek current information that explains the player profile, mode, region, and measurement behind the claim.
