Do not treat a critic score and a player score as rival grades. They are usually measurements built from different scales, review rules, time periods and expectations. Before buying, identify what each number actually represents, match it to the exact platform and edition you will play, then read enough recent written reviews to verify the reasons behind the score. A gap is a prompt to investigate—not proof that critics or players are automatically right.
Why critic and player scores disagree
A critic review normally represents one publication’s considered assessment of a review copy or launch build. A player aggregate reflects many individual recommendations, often after substantially more play time and after patches have changed the game. The groups can therefore evaluate different versions of the same product and prioritize different outcomes.

Critics may weigh design coherence, writing, technical performance, accessibility, value and innovation during a limited review window. Players may care most about long-term progression, matchmaking, post-launch support, monetization, community behavior or whether a particular feature works on their hardware. Neither perspective automatically outranks the other. The useful question is whether the evidence addresses the way you intend to play.
A disagreement can also be mathematical rather than substantive. A percentage of players recommending a game is not the same thing as an average score out of 100. You cannot subtract one headline number from the other and call the difference meaningful until you understand both systems.

Identify what each score measures
Critic aggregates such as Metascore
Metacritic converts participating critic reviews to a 0–100 scale, then combines them into a weighted aggregate called the Metascore. The underlying scores come from the publications themselves; Metacritic is not a single reviewer assigning its own grade. Its methodology is explained in Metacritic’s score-computation guide.
That makes a Metascore a summary of selected professional reviews, not a universal measurement of enjoyment. A game with a 78 and one with an 82 may differ in ways that matter greatly to you even though the numbers look close. Read the individual reviews when a specific concern—such as a particular control scheme, accessibility feature or online mode—determines your purchase.
Metacritic describes scores below 50 as generally negative among game-review publications and scores in the upper 70s or higher as usually indicating a game is unequivocally good. Those are conventions for interpreting game reviews on that service, not rules that apply to every rating scale or every player.
Steam’s player recommendation summary
Steam’s headline review result is fundamentally a categorization based on the percentage of positive recommendations, with additional factors affecting how reviews and scores are displayed. It is not a critic-style numerical average. The platform explains the system in Steam Support’s User Reviews FAQ.
Steamworks documentation says reviews posted by accounts that purchased the game on Steam and played it count toward that game’s review score. This eligibility rule applies to Steam’s score; do not assume that another store or review site uses the same rule. A game can also have many written reviews while its percentage remains sensitive to a relatively small number of new recommendations, especially soon after release.
PlayStation ratings and reviews
PlayStation’s UK reviews policy says users who acquired a digital game through their PlayStation account can review it. The policy also notes that reviews or ratings are not available for every product and can be limited by region. Treat that as a UK-specific published policy, not a guarantee for every PlayStation territory or every title. Check the store page in your own region before drawing conclusions about who is represented.

Match the exact game before comparing numbers
A score is useful only when it describes the item you are considering. Before opening review pages, write down the following:
- Title and release: distinguish the original game from a remake, remaster, expansion or bundle.
- Platform: a PC version and a console version can have different performance, controls, features and player populations.
- Edition: deluxe packages, complete editions and versions with downloadable content may change the value proposition.
- Region and storefront: review eligibility and displayed ratings can vary by territory.
- Current build: note whether the reviews discuss launch software or a later patched version.
Do not use a critic score for a console port to answer a question about a different PC release, or use reviews of an original edition to judge a remaster without checking what changed. If the store page combines editions, open the written reviews and look for explicit references to the version being sold.
Use a disciplined comparison workflow
1. Record the scale and aggregation method
Label each number before you compare it: “critic aggregate, 0–100” or “player recommendations, positive percentage.” A 90 on a critic scale and 90% positive on a recommendation system are not equivalent achievements. If a site does not clearly explain its scale, treat the number as incomplete evidence until you can find its methodology.
2. Record the number of reviews
Capture the count of critic reviews and player reviews shown on each page. A small critic pool can move sharply when one publication adds a score; a large player pool can still conceal a recent change if most reviews are old. Counts do not decide quality, but they tell you how cautiously to interpret a headline.
Look at the distribution, not just the average or percentage. Read several positive and negative reviews and note whether they describe the same concrete strengths or problems. A concentrated set of detailed complaints is more informative than a long list of one-line reactions, regardless of the aggregate’s color or rank.

Find the platform’s own explanation of who may post and who is included in the score. On Steam, the published rule is tied to purchasing on Steam and playing the game. On PlayStation UK, the policy is tied to acquiring the digital game through a PlayStation account, with product and regional limitations. Other services can use different verification, ownership or moderation rules, so never transfer one platform’s eligibility assumptions to another.

4. Check dates and the current state of the game
Separate launch-period evidence from recent experience. Look for patch dates, references to changed systems, server population, balance updates, technical fixes and new monetization. An old review can accurately describe the game at the time it was written while failing to describe the build you would download today.
Steam says eligible games released more than 45 days earlier may show a recent review score when enough recent reviews exist. When both lifetime and recent summaries appear, inspect both and read the recent comments. The 45-day threshold and the recent-score feature are specific to Steam and can change; verify what the store currently displays for the title.
5. Investigate the reasons behind the gap
Make two short lists: the recurring reasons from critics and the recurring reasons from players. Use concrete language such as “stutters during traversal,” “excellent co-op progression,” or “late-game repetition,” rather than “critics hate it” or “players are toxic.” Then verify that the comments refer to your platform and edition.

Critics may have evaluated a pre-release build or spent fewer hours with an ongoing-service game. Players may be responding to updates, community disputes or expectations that were not visible during the review window. These are possible explanations, not assumptions; the written evidence must show which one applies.
6. Filter every reason through your priorities
Sort findings into three categories:
- Deal-breakers: problems that prevent you from playing, such as unusable controls, severe platform performance or a required online mode that is unavailable in your region.
- Trade-offs: weaknesses you might accept for a strength you value, such as repetitive missions in an otherwise excellent story.
- Irrelevant complaints: issues tied to a mode, feature or play style you will not use.
Match the evidence to your hardware, accessibility requirements, tolerance for difficulty, solo or multiplayer plans, available play time and willingness to wait for patches. A criticism that is minor for one buyer can be decisive for another.
A comparison table for a score disagreement

How to recognize a possible review bomb
Valve defines a review bomb as a large volume of reviews arriving in a compressed period with the intention of lowering a game’s score. Its explanation notes that such activity can make an aggregate less useful as a guide to future purchaser satisfaction and describes treatment of reviews judged off-topic. Look for several signals together rather than treating any one signal as proof:
- A sudden, narrow spike in negative reviews that does not resemble the game’s earlier pattern.
- Repeated wording, memes or references to an external controversy instead of the game’s mechanics or service.
- A time-bound campaign connected to a publisher decision, platform dispute or unrelated event.
- A large difference between the score during the burst and the reasons in detailed reviews written before and after it.
A review bomb can coexist with legitimate criticism. A controversy may reveal a real pricing, policy or content problem, and players can also use a coordinated action to describe genuine defects. Read the substance and decide whether the issue affects your purchase. Do not dismiss every low score merely because a burst occurred, and do not accept a platform’s filtering of off-topic reviews as proof that the product is problem-free.
Read written reviews for evidence, not permission
What to extract from a positive review
- The activity the reviewer actually performed and for how long, when stated.
- The specific systems that worked well, such as aiming, exploration, co-op communication or accessibility options.
- The platform, hardware and version used.
- Any limits the reviewer accepted, such as a short campaign or a small player population.
What to extract from a negative review
- A reproducible symptom rather than a general insult.
- When the problem appears and whether a patch reportedly changed it.
- Whether it affects the entire game or one mode, region, quest or hardware configuration.
- Evidence that the reviewer used the same edition and platform you plan to buy.
Prioritize reviews that explain cause and consequence: what happened, how often it happened, and whether it changed the reviewer’s ability to enjoy or complete the game. A short emotional reaction can signal that an issue exists, but it cannot tell you its scope.

Critics high, players low
Check for launch-versus-current differences, long-term progression problems, server or matchmaking conditions, monetization, missing promised features and technical issues that emerge after many hours. Confirm that negative comments are recent and apply to your platform. If the complaints concern a core activity you plan to repeat, waiting for a patch or choosing another game is rational even when the critic aggregate is strong.
Critics low, players high
Look for a niche appeal that professional reviews treated as a weakness: unusual difficulty, a narrow but deep simulation, simple presentation or a story aimed at a specific community. Verify that positive players explain why the game works for them and that their platform and edition match yours. High enthusiasm is less useful if it depends on a feature you will not use or a community that is no longer active.

Both groups are positive
Confirm that the remaining negatives are acceptable to you. Broad agreement lowers the chance of a hidden, widely reported failure, but it does not answer personal questions such as motion-sickness triggers, control preferences or whether the campaign length suits your schedule.

Both groups are negative
Separate a flawed product from a contested launch that might have improved. Read the newest detailed reviews, check whether the title is still receiving updates, and identify whether the criticism concerns a fundamental design choice or a fixable technical state. If the central activity is consistently described as unenjoyable for your intended use, a low-risk decision is to skip it.
A 10-minute pre-purchase checklist
- Open the exact store listing for your platform, region and edition.
- Write down the critic scale and the player-score format; do not compare unlike numbers directly.
- Record the number of critic and player reviews shown.
- Read the platform’s review-eligibility explanation, especially if verified ownership matters to you.
- Check whether the player page offers a recent score or recent review view.
- Read at least three detailed positive reviews and three detailed negative reviews from the relevant platform.
- List recurring complaints and benefits in concrete terms.
- Check dates, patches, online population comments and references to the current build.
- Look for a time-bound burst or off-topic repetition that could distort the aggregate, without dismissing substantive criticism.
- Decide based on whether the reasons match your deal-breakers, priorities and planned way of playing.
When to wait, buy, or look elsewhere
Buy now
Buying is defensible when the reviews describe the version you will use, recent evidence does not show a problem central to your plans, and the remaining drawbacks are trade-offs you knowingly accept. A score gap explained by preferences you do not share should not stop you by itself.
Wait for more evidence
Wait when the game is new, the critic sample is small, player feedback is changing rapidly, a major patch is imminent, or the available comments concern a different build. Recheck recent reviews rather than relying on a launch-week headline.

Look elsewhere when multiple recent, platform-matched reviews corroborate a deal-breaker for your use—such as unacceptable performance, inaccessible controls or a central mode that does not function reliably. The decision is about fit, not about declaring one scoring group correct.
Limits of any aggregate score
No score tells you how a game performs on your exact hardware, with your network connection, accessibility setup or tolerance for repetition. Aggregates also compress disagreements: two games can share a number while one is consistently liked and the other is sharply polarized. Eligibility policies, moderation and display features can change over time, so revisit the platform’s current explanation when a purchase decision depends on the details.
The most reliable conclusion comes from triangulation: identify the scale, inspect the sample, verify eligibility, match the date and version, and connect recurring reasons to your own priorities. Use the headline score to decide what to investigate, then let specific, current evidence make the purchase decision.
