Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare OBS, FFmpeg, and YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages on one timeline. Find the first sign of trouble, check whether it appeared in the encoder or local recording, and then compare it with YouTube’s incoming-stream report. A matching timestamp is useful evidence, not proof of what caused the outage.
What the logs can—and cannot—tell you
Each source reports a different part of the stream path. OBS can show dropped frames or a connection problem between your computer and the remote ingest server. FFmpeg records what its process reported while reading, encoding, and sending media, depending on its command and build. YouTube’s Live Control Room reports the health of the stream it received.
OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or that the configured bitrate cannot be sustained; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. That narrows the possibilities to delivery or bitrate capacity, but does not by itself identify a faulty device, network segment, encoder setting, or platform. See the OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide.
Likewise, an FFmpeg error, an OBS disconnect, and a YouTube health warning can be related symptoms or separate events. Treat the sequence and corroborating evidence—not one line in isolation—as the basis for your diagnosis.

Build a reliable incident timeline
1. Preserve the evidence
- Save the OBS log covering the incident and FFmpeg’s standard output and standard error, if captured.
- Keep the exact FFmpeg command line and its version or build information with the logs. FFmpeg behavior and messages depend on the invocation and version; there is no universal command or error-to-cause mapping.
- Redact stream keys, credentials, and other secrets before sharing logs. A stream key is effectively a credential for broadcasting to your channel.
For FFmpeg’s command and option reference, see the FFmpeg documentation. Use the documentation matching the build and options you actually run; do not infer a specific flag from a generic error excerpt.
2. Mark the time the stream appeared to drop
Write down the apparent drop time, date, and timezone. Record whether the computer clock may be offset from the time shown in YouTube. If you do not know the offset, mark it as unknown rather than forcing the events to line up.
3. Find the first local sign of trouble
Read the actual log text and identify the earliest relevant event: for example, dropped frames or a connection loss in OBS, an encoder or output error, an FFmpeg process exit, or a media-read problem. Do not assume a particular message wording; it varies with the application, command, and version. Note what happened immediately before and after that event.

4. Check YouTube’s timestamped health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard and inspect the stream-health history around the same time. YouTube says each error has a timestamp next to it. Record the exact message and its time, and note whether it concerns stream format or settings, or reports a broader health issue. YouTube marks critical errors red and moderate errors yellow; the color and message are clues to severity and the check YouTube recommends, not a complete diagnosis. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.

5. Align events without overstating the match
Put the local events and YouTube messages in time order, preserving each source’s timezone and noting any known clock difference. Ask which event appeared first and whether the others followed. Close timing can support a connection between symptoms, but clocks, reporting delays, and separate faults can complicate that comparison.
Classify the evidence by where it appears
| Evidence location | What it may point toward | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or a connection loss | An unstable route to the remote ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; these clues do not identify the precise cause. | Compare the timing with YouTube health messages. Consider stable upload capacity, network devices, and whether the connection was wired or Wi-Fi. |
| FFmpeg reports an encoding, media, or output error, or exits | A process, source-media, or encoding/output problem is possible, but interpretation depends on the exact command, build, and surrounding log. | Inspect the full excerpt, command, version, and whether the process continued; compare the local preview or saved archive if available. |
| Local preview or saved archive has defects, or CPU load is high | A source, encoding, or local system issue becomes more plausible than a problem limited to the outbound path. | Check image and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, and the archive around the incident. |
| YouTube reports a stream-format or setting error | The submitted stream may not match the requirement named in YouTube’s message. | Use that specific message to check the relevant codec, bitrate, audio/video stream count, frame rate, resolution, or keyframe frequency. Do not change unrelated settings by default. |
| Local picture and sound appear healthy, but YouTube reports a problem or the stream drops | An outbound connectivity problem is one possibility, especially when local output is intact. | Investigate the outbound internet connection and network path; if the problem persists, YouTube recommends contacting the ISP. |
The table describes diagnostic clues, not definitive cause labels. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder version, image and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, local archive, and outbound internet connection. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Follow the strongest clue with a targeted test
If OBS shows drops or disconnections
Check whether your available upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate, and whether the bitrate is within the streaming service’s limits. OBS recommends testing a different server or service, reducing bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, and checking network-related settings or software. Change one relevant factor at a time and preserve the original logs; broad changes can make the next incident harder to compare.
If Wi-Fi instability is plausible, try a wired connection and compare the result. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable and recommends wired networking. Routers, cables, network cards, and other devices along the route can also contribute, so Ethernet is a test—not a guaranteed fix.

If local encoding or output looks unhealthy
Compare the encoder’s image and sound with the saved local archive, if one exists, and check CPU load and encoder errors at the same time. If the archive itself has the same defect, that supports investigating the source or local encoding path. If the local output is healthy while delivery fails, shift attention toward outbound connectivity rather than assuming the encoder produced bad media.

If YouTube names a format or setting problem
Follow the event’s own instructions. YouTube’s error catalog covers issues involving codec, bitrate, audio and video stream count, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe frequency. Which check applies depends on the message shown for that event; an error in one category is not evidence that every listed setting is wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep diagnostic logs separate from audience analytics
YouTube’s stream status and Live Control Room health messages are the relevant views for diagnosing an incident. Post-stream metrics and the Analytics report are different views: YouTube says Analytics data is based on Video ID, is processed and despammed, and may measure different information from Live Control Room. Viewer analytics are not a substitute for the timestamped stream-health record. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.
Write a conclusion that matches the evidence
State what the logs establish, what they suggest, and what remains uncertain. For example: “OBS connection-drop evidence begins near YouTube’s stream-health error; the local archive remains healthy, so an outbound-path problem is plausible, but these records alone do not establish the cause.” If the first sign is a local encoder error and the archive shows the same defect, say that the evidence points toward local output and identify the next check.

A stronger causal claim needs corroboration beyond nearby timestamps—for example, a reproducible result after a targeted network or encoder test. If asking someone to interpret FFmpeg output, include the command, version or build, and a safely redacted excerpt around the incident. Without those details, exact flag advice or a definitive interpretation may be misleading.
