Before buying, identify what you will repeatedly do—maintain survival infrastructure, explore for resources, grow a settlement, or manage production—then compare pressure, play modes, platform, technical requirements, and current store details for the specific game.
Start with the routine, not the tags
Store tags can tell you that a game is open-world or a simulation, but they do not explain what its systems ask you to do. The useful first question is: Which systems do I want to manage? Look for the repeatable activities and how they interact: gathering, building, repairing, producing, farming, assigning work, or exploring.
For example, Steam describes Occupy Mars: The Game as a survival-oriented loop of exploring for resources and building sites, upgrading a base, producing essentials, repairing machinery, and managing electricity. Crate Entertainment’s Steam description of Farthest Frontier centers on growing a settlement: harvesting, hunting, fishing, farming, making goods, and managing villagers’ jobs and health.
Compare what the game simulates
“Simulation” may mean infrastructure and survival systems in one game, or a settlement and its economy in another. Make a shortlist of the systems you expect to spend time with, then check whether the store description makes those systems central or merely mentions them.

- Survival infrastructure: Does the game ask you to secure essentials, maintain equipment, or keep a base operating?
- Settlement management: Do you assign work, develop production chains, manage health, or expand a town?
- Farming and production: Are crops, goods, and resource flows substantial parts of the routine?
- Exploration: Does travelling through the world reveal resources or suitable building sites that matter to progress?
These distinctions are more useful than assuming two games with overlapping tags will offer the same kind of depth. PC Gamer’s open-world guide covers games with varied forms of freedom, exploration, settings, activities, and modding; GamesRadar+’s simulation guide spans routines such as driving, farming, and foraging. Those guides illustrate how broad both labels are, rather than establishing a single definition or definitive ranking of open-world simulations: PC Gamer’s open-world guide and GamesRadar+’s simulator guide.
Check exploration, pressure, and combat together
An open map does not guarantee that exploration drives progression. Ask whether discovery changes what you can build or produce, or whether the world mainly provides scenery and travel. Also check what creates pressure while you explore: environmental hazards, hunger, equipment upkeep, enemies, or raids.

Steam’s Occupy Mars description connects exploration with finding resources and suitable places to build, while also describing management of water, oxygen, power, and food. Farthest Frontier’s description focuses on town development and villagers’ needs; it also says a pacifist mode is available. That makes combat settings worth checking if you want settlement management without raider pressure.
Use these two games to test your preferences
Occupy Mars: The Game
Steam lists Occupy Mars as an indie simulation with single-player and online co-op features. Its described direction is technical survival: explore Martian regions, gather resources, establish and upgrade a base, produce water, oxygen, and food, repair machinery, and manage power. Steam lists January 30, 2026 as its release date and May 10, 2023 as the start of Early Access. These are listing dates, not a guarantee of future development plans. Check the current listing for the game’s present release state and options.

- Perform amazing stunts on high ramps.
Farthest Frontier
Crate Entertainment’s Steam description presents Farthest Frontier as settlement growth and management, with villagers’ work and health alongside farming, trade, transport, and production. The developer lists more than 190 building types, a 140-plus-point technology tree, and twelve crops with crop-rotation mechanics. Those are developer-published feature counts, not independent measurements. The listing also describes Steam Workshop integration, which may matter if you want to use mods.

- Edition and included content: Compare what each edition includes rather than inferring content from its name.
- Price and availability: Recheck at checkout because both can change by date, region, and store.
- Updates and mods: Look for update history if ongoing changes matter to you, and verify whether mod support is available for your platform and version.
Steam’s Occupy Mars page exposes store options and update history, while Farthest Frontier’s page describes Workshop integration and lists PC requirements. Treat those as details of the respective Steam listings, not assurances about other storefronts or platforms: Occupy Mars on Steam and Farthest Frontier on Steam.
