How to Compare PC Graphics Cards for Your Games and Monitor

A practical way to compare graphics cards: match benchmarks to your games, monitor, and settings, then verify memory, feature support, and PC compatibility.

Compare graphics cards using the games, settings, and monitor resolution you actually plan to use—not a single model name or headline score. Match benchmark conditions first, then weigh video memory, feature support, power, physical fit, and display connections.

1. Start with the games and settings you care about

List the games you play most and the experience you want from them. A competitive game where you prioritize high frame rates is a different workload from a visually demanding single-player game with ray tracing enabled. Include the quality settings you expect to use; performance in one game does not predict performance in every other game.

  • Competitive play: focus on results for your games at the settings you would actually use, and compare frame rates with your target refresh rate.
  • Visually demanding games: look for results at your preferred quality preset, including ray tracing if you plan to enable it.
  • A mixed library: use a multi-game suite rather than relying on one title or one aggregate score.

2. Match the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate

Record the monitor’s native resolution and refresh rate, or the specifications of the display you plan to buy. Compare 1080p results for a 1080p target, 1440p results for a 1440p target, and 4K results for a 4K target whenever possible. Pixel load and useful performance targets differ across these resolutions; AMD’s buying guide treats them as distinct gaming targets, and Tom’s Hardware tests across all three.

For high-refresh gaming, compare measured frame rates in your games with the refresh rate you want to use. A card’s name or peak specification alone cannot establish that it will reach a particular rate in a particular game. Also verify that the card’s display outputs and your monitor’s inputs can support the intended display mode.

3. Compare benchmarks under matching conditions

Before comparing two results, check the game, resolution, quality settings, and rendering mode. A useful comparison keeps native rasterization, ray tracing, upscaling, and frame generation distinct; results from different modes are not like-for-like.

Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy presents native-resolution results without DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or frame generation, and separates rasterization from ray-tracing results. Its June 2026 update covered 48 GPUs across 19 tests, including eight ray-tracing titles. Those figures describe that outlet’s test suite, not an industry-wide standard. Its buying guide also notes that it tests at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, with settings varying by title. Inspect the settings and methodology behind a result rather than assuming it represents every system.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5060 WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, Cooling System, 8GB 128-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, Manufactured by NVIDIA, DisplayPort & HDMI - Video Output Interface, GV-N5060WF2OC-8GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060

When an upscaling or frame-generation result matters to your decision, compare it separately and identify the exact mode used. Do not treat a generated or upscaled frame rate as if it were a native-rendering result.

4. Compare the features your games actually support

Upscaling and frame-generation features are not guaranteed to work in every game or on every card. AMD says FSR availability depends on developer integration and selected games and products; NVIDIA’s comparison distinguishes capabilities by product generation. Check the exact game, feature version or mode, and graphics card rather than relying on a broad brand-level claim.

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Likewise, use a family-level feature summary only as a starting point. It cannot tell you how a specific card performs in an individual game; consult game-specific benchmarks for that.

5. Check video memory as one part of the decision

Compare the memory capacity and type listed for the exact card model, and look for game-specific evidence at your target resolution and settings. The cited vendor materials identify memory as a comparison factor, but they do not establish one capacity that is right for every game and configuration. Avoid treating a generic minimum as a universal recommendation.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

For example, AMD’s current Radeon RX 9000 product listings give the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 16 GB of memory, the RX 9070 GRE 12 GB, and RX 9060 XT variants with either 16 GB or 8 GB. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not a ranking of performance or a universal memory threshold. Confirm the specification for the precise board you are considering.

6. Make sure the card fits the PC and monitor

Check the exact card’s dimensions, power connectors, and power requirements against your case and power supply. Board-partner versions of the same GPU can differ, so use the listing for the specific card rather than assuming every model in a GPU family has identical fit or power needs. Confirm that its outputs match the monitor’s inputs and support the display mode you intend to use.
