How to Solve Time-Loop Puzzles Without Losing Track of What You’ve Learned

A simple, spoiler-light routine for tracking clues, checking what resets, and making the next time-loop run answer a useful question.

Make each loop answer one specific question. Before you set out, note what you want to learn; afterward, record what happened, what you think it means, and what you’ll test next. First check what the game itself saves: some loops preserve knowledge, some retain selected progress or items, and some provide a journal or log. The routine below helps you use those systems without treating every time-loop game as if it worked the same way.

Start each loop with one question

“Explore more” is hard to evaluate when the loop ends. A focused question gives the trip a purpose and makes it easier to tell whether you learned anything.

Write a question that could be answered by an observation or action: “Does this character leave the square before the alarm?” is more useful than “What is going on here?” If you have several curiosities, pick one to prioritize and save the others for later loops.

This fits the design of Outer Wilds, where exploration is organized around answering questions about the world rather than following explicit objectives. Creative Director Alex Beachum described that aim in a 2015 interview with Game Developer. That does not make question-led play a rule for every game; it is a practical way to give an open-ended loop a clear purpose.

What should you write down after each loop?

Keep notes short enough to review between runs. A pocket notebook works, as does a digital note. For each loop, capture four things:

  • Question: What were you trying to find out?
  • Observation: What did you directly see or do, and where and when did it happen?
  • Interpretation: What might the observation mean? Label this as a guess, not a fact.
  • Next test: What action could support or disprove that interpretation?

For example: “Question: Will the guard open the west door after the bell? Observation: At the second bell, the guard walked west; I did not see the door open. Interpretation: The bell may trigger movement, but the door might need a separate condition. Next test: Reach the west door before the bell and watch for a prompt.” The point is to preserve the difference between what happened and what you inferred from it.

Record connections, not just clues

A clue may point toward another location, character, event, or clue. Note the relationship: “symbol on wall matches the mark near the reservoir” is more useful than writing down both marks with no link. If the connection is uncertain, use a question mark or label it as a hypothesis.

Mobius Digital’s 2015 account of developing Outer Wilds describes clues scattered across planets, with clues leading to other clues and hidden locations. During playtests, players wrote discoveries on notepads, which helped motivate the in-game ship computer’s discovery-tracking role. The developers’ account is in their Game Developer article. Use a game’s built-in tracking when available, but personal notes can still capture your reasoning and planned tests.

Check what resets and what persists

Do not assume that a loop erases everything or that knowledge alone is enough to advance. Early on, check which parts of the game state carry over. Look at the journal, map, computer, inventory, character behavior, and any completed-task markers before and after a reset.

  • Information: Does the game record discoveries, or must you remember them?
  • Access: Do doors, routes, or shortcuts stay open?
  • Items and tasks: Are objects retained, or are completed tasks recognized in another way?
  • People and events: Do characters remember you, repeat the same schedule, or react differently?

Use the answers to plan. If access resets but your knowledge remains, plan the route needed to reach the next test. If a character forgets you, note what must be repeated and look for dialogue or shortcuts that avoid replaying unrelated steps.

These details vary by game. In The Forgotten City, creator Nick Pearce described loops as a way to learn about inhabitants and influence the day’s outcome. A Game Developer design interview reports that characters can forget the player while the player remembers them, and that dialogue shortcuts and delegation can help bypass some completed tasks. Those are specific mechanics, not a genre-wide promise. Xbox Wire’s November 8, 2021 interview describes the game as a mystery adventure built around exploration, deduction, questioning characters, and using the loop wisely to solve puzzles.

Turn a theory into a test

When you have an interpretation, write down what would count as evidence for or against it. Then choose a route and action that could distinguish between competing explanations.

Number Slide Puzzle Brain Teaser IQ Game - Pack of 1 (15 Number 1Pcs)
  • 15 Number Slide Puzzle.
  • Classic puzzle for the whole family.
  • Goal is to get all the numbers to be in order.
  • To start, scramble the 15 numbered tiles in the tray then solve the puzzle by sliding the tiles back to the correct numerical order.
  • Compact size makes it great for travel or as a stocking stuffer.
  1. State the theory: “The bell makes the guard move west.”
  2. Name another possibility: “The guard moves west at a set time, whether or not the bell rings.”
  3. Pick a discriminating observation: Watch the guard before the bell, or compare the timing on another run if the game allows it.
  4. Record the result: Note what you observed, not just whether your theory felt right.

If a run produces no new information, avoid repeating the same route by habit. Change the question, test a different explanation, or follow a clue that might connect to the problem. In a loop-based investigation, planning matters because the useful action may have to happen at a particular time. The Forgotten City creator Nick Pearce put the game-specific point plainly: “To advance the investigation, you will have to use the time loop wisely and solve puzzles,” in his Xbox Wire interview.

Close the loop with a compact update

Before starting another cycle, spend a moment updating your notes. Mark the original question as answered, unresolved, or replaced; revise any hypothesis that the evidence changed; and write one next test. A simple status key helps: “confirmed” for a directly established fact, “likely” for a supported interpretation, and “unknown” for an open question.

For complicated mysteries, keep a short timeline or a list of people and events alongside the loop notes. Organizing events can help when they are encountered out of order, and recording why you reached a conclusion makes it easier to spot gaps. In an interview about the non-time-loop mystery Return of the Obra Dinn, creator Lucas Pope described the in-game book as a way to organize the sequence of events and the logical rationale for assigning fates. His comments are in a Game Developer interview published March 15, 2019. It is an adjacent example of structured mystery tracking, not evidence that the game uses a time loop.

A reusable loop note

  • Loop / location:
  • Question:
  • What I observed (where/when):
  • What may explain it:
  • What resets / persists:
  • Next test:
  • Status: answered / unresolved / revise

Keep it flexible. If the game’s journal already records events, use your own space mainly for hypotheses and next steps. If the game has no log, add enough context to recognize where and when a clue appeared.
