Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare two franchises by the games you would actually play—not by their logos or genre labels. Start with your platform, preferred play style, solo or multiplayer needs, content boundaries, budget and available time. Then choose a representative entry from each series, check story order and edition details, compare equivalent time and difficulty measures, and verify the current regional price before you buy. The better choice is the series that fits your constraints and priorities, not a universal winner.
1. Write down your buying constraints first
A franchise comparison becomes useful only after you define what “fits.” A series can have an excellent reputation and still be a poor purchase if its current entries do not run on your hardware, require a mode you do not want, exceed your budget or demand more time than you have.

Platform and hardware
- List the hardware you actually own: console generation, PC, handheld or cloud service.
- Check whether the specific entry—not merely the franchise—runs on that platform.
- Confirm whether a modern remaster, remake or backward-compatible edition is being sold instead of the original release.
- Note storage, peripheral and account requirements when the store listing specifies them.
Preferred play style
Record the activities you want to repeat for hours: tactical planning, exploration, shooting, driving, building, dialogue choices, puzzle solving, character progression or something else. A genre tag is only a filter; games carrying the same label can have very different pacing, controls and priorities. The practical checklist approach summarized by iTechGuides recommends using videos, reviews and the specific game listing to test that fit rather than trusting the genre name alone (iTechGuides’ game-choice checklist).

Modes and social requirements
- Decide whether you need a complete solo campaign, local co-op, online co-op, competitive multiplayer or a mixture.
- Check whether the desired mode is included in the edition you are considering.
- Verify any platform subscription or persistent internet requirement on the current store page.
Content boundaries
Write down content you want to avoid or seek, such as graphic violence, horror, gambling-like mechanics, intense language or mature themes. Use the rating and content descriptors shown for the exact regional listing. A franchise’s reputation cannot substitute for checking the particular game and edition.

Budget and time
Set a maximum price and a realistic weekly or monthly time commitment. Include paid expansions, a required online subscription and any separate release you would need to understand the story. A low sticker price is not necessarily the lower-cost choice if the complete experience requires several purchases.
2. Choose representative games instead of comparing logos
Do not compare “Series A” and “Series B” as abstract brands. Select one plausible starting game from each and inspect the experience you would receive after paying for it.
How to select an entry
- Choose the newest accessible mainline entry if you value current controls, visuals and active online features.
- Choose the first release if understanding the original design or story foundation matters.
- Choose a self-contained entry if you want to minimize required background knowledge.
- If the obvious entry is a remake or remaster, record that version separately; mechanics, performance and included content may differ from the original.
Inspect the repeated play loop
Watch representative gameplay and read detailed coverage of the exact version you could buy. Focus on what happens repeatedly after the opening hour:
- What is the minute-to-minute action?
- How often does the game interrupt play with dialogue, cutscenes, menus or travel?
- Does progression come from equipment, skill trees, narrative choices, puzzle mastery, exploration or team composition?
- How much freedom exists to approach objectives in different ways?
- Are optional activities meaningful or mainly collectible cleanup?
This direct inspection follows the guidance attributed to iTechGuides and ESRB-oriented game-selection advice: use the specific game’s video, review coverage and content information rather than assuming that a franchise label describes every installment (source guidance).
Compare like with like
Compare a campaign-focused entry with another campaign-focused entry, or a competitive multiplayer title with another competitive multiplayer title. Comparing a single-player spin-off against a sprawling mainline RPG can make one franchise appear slower or shorter for reasons unrelated to the series as a whole.

3. Map the series structure and decide where to start
Entry order matters most when stories, characters or mechanics build on earlier games. Before buying, identify the series’ numbered mainline titles, spin-offs, remasters, remakes and alternate timelines.
Release order versus chronological order
Release order is the sequence in which players received the games. It usually reflects how the developers introduced mechanics, characters and reveals. Chronological order follows the fictional world’s timeline and can place a later-developed prequel first. PlatPrices distinguishes these two orders on applicable franchise pages and notes that its catalogue covers tracked PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games only (PlatPrices’ PlayStation series listings).
| Start with release order when… | Start chronologically when… | Choose a standalone entry when… |
|---|---|---|
| You want reveals and mechanics to arrive as their creators designed them. | You care more about in-world cause and effect and can accept that later-developed games may assume modern-series conventions. | You are testing the franchise, dislike homework or have limited time. |
| You want to see technical and design evolution. | You are comfortable checking a spoiler-free guide to avoid confusion. | The series contains multiple timelines, reboots or disconnected protagonists. |
Answering “best game first?”
There is no single correct order. Starting with the highest-rated game can give you the strongest first impression, but it may spoil earlier revelations or make older mechanics feel unnecessarily rough. Starting with the first game preserves the series’ development path but can require patience. A practical compromise is to begin with the most accessible self-contained entry, then use release order for the connected games that follow.
When to skip weak entries
You do not have to complete every installment. If a game is nonessential to the story, technically unavailable on your platform or clearly outside your preferences, mark it as optional. Keep a simple list of “required for story,” “useful context” and “safe to skip,” based on spoiler-conscious guides for the exact franchise. Do not assume that a numbered sequel is automatically required; some series reset their cast or setting.
4. Compare gameplay, pace and genre precisely
Use observable characteristics rather than broad labels. “Action,” “RPG” or “strategy” does not tell a buyer whether the game is deliberate or frantic, linear or open-ended, forgiving or punishing.

| Representative game and entry point | Specific title, release or remake version, platform and edition. Franchise-specific values are not stated until the two series are named. | You want a clear, low-risk first purchase. |
| Core gameplay loop | Repeated actions, progression system, mission structure and how much optional content supports the loop. | You enjoy the activities you will perform most often. |
| Story dependence and order | Whether entries are self-contained, serialized, rebooted or split into timelines; release and chronological orders. | You care about continuity, character arcs or avoiding spoilers. |
| Genre and pace | Actual tempo, exploration density, combat frequency, downtime and learning curve—not just the store genre. | The rhythm matches your available attention and preferred intensity. |
| Solo, co-op and competitive modes | Included modes, player-count limits and any online or subscription requirement. | Your preferred way to play is available without buying an extra edition. |
| Difficulty and accessibility | Difficulty options, assist settings, checkpointing, remappable controls, subtitle and visual options, and whether these vary by version. | You need flexible challenge or specific accessibility support. |
| Estimated time using equivalent measures | Campaign-to-campaign or completionist-to-completionist estimates, with the source and method identified. | The commitment matches your schedule. |

| Current regional price and included content | Store currency, sale end date if shown, base game, expansions, online access and physical or digital format. | The complete package fits your budget today. |
5. Measure difficulty and time without misleading yourself
“Longer” and “harder” are meaningful only when the underlying measures match. Compare the main campaign of one entry with the main campaign of the other, or compare completionist estimates with completionist estimates. Do not compare a trophy-hunting route with an ordinary first playthrough.

PlatPrices reports trophy difficulty and time-to-platinum ranges for games in its tracked catalogue. Those figures describe the work required for that trophy target, not the universal difficulty of the game or the number of hours an ordinary player will spend enjoying it. They also apply to the service’s tracked PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 catalogue, not every platform or franchise (PlatPrices catalogue and series data).
Use a consistent time worksheet
- Campaign: record the estimate for reaching the ending without major optional content.
- Completionist: record the estimate for the same completion target in both games.
- Repeatable or online content: note whether the end point is open-ended rather than a fixed number of hours.
- Your pace: adjust for whether you usually explore, replay missions, use guides or play on a higher difficulty.
Treat any published range as a planning aid, not a promise. Reviews and player reports can differ because they use different goals, patches and skill levels.
6. Verify platform, edition, region and price at checkout
A comparison can change on the day you buy. Confirm the exact listing rather than relying on an old article, a trailer or a price tracker.
- Open the official storefront or retailer for your platform and region.
- Match the title, platform generation and edition to the representative game you evaluated.
- Read the included-content section: base game, season pass, expansions, bonus missions and upgrade entitlement.
- Check whether multiplayer requires a platform subscription or a persistent internet connection.
- Record the displayed currency, sale price and any stated sale end date.
- For a physical copy, verify disc region, used-condition details and whether downloadable content codes are expired.
- Compare the final package cost, not only the headline price, and buy only after the listing matches your needs.
Price trackers are useful for spotting a candidate deal, but an independent tracker warns that prices may be outdated; confirm the amount on the PlayStation Store before purchasing (PlatPrices pricing information and limitations). Prices, editions and availability can differ by country and change without notice.

7. Use reviews and gameplay evidence intelligently
Reviews answer different questions from store pages. A store listing can establish platform, edition, rating and included content; a detailed review or gameplay video can reveal pacing, repetition, controls and technical behavior.
Questions to ask while watching or reading
- Is the footage from the same platform and edition you plan to buy?
- Does the reviewer describe the opening only, or the full progression and endgame?
- Are complaints about launch conditions, or about the current patched version?
- Does the reviewer’s taste match yours, especially on difficulty, story and multiplayer?
- Are performance observations tied to a stated platform and mode?
Use several perspectives to identify consistent patterns, but do not average scores as if they were a scientific measurement. A lower-scored game can still be the better fit when its loop, length or story structure matches your constraints.
8. Turn the evidence into a preference-based decision
There is no established universal weighting that can declare one unspecified franchise better than another. Make the weighting explicit so the final choice reflects your priorities.
A simple weighted score
- Choose five to seven criteria from the comparison table, such as gameplay fit, story accessibility, time, multiplayer, platform fit and total cost.
- Assign each criterion an importance from 1 (minor) to 5 (decisive).
- Rate each representative game from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (excellent fit), using only evidence you recorded.
- Multiply importance by fit, add the results for each franchise and inspect the individual scores before looking at the total.
- Reject any series that fails a non-negotiable constraint, even if its weighted total is higher.
This is a decision aid, not an objective review score. If two totals are close, choose the cheaper low-risk entry, the one with a clearer return policy or the one whose gameplay video leaves you more eager to play.
Match the result to your priority
- Story continuity: prefer the series with a documented order and an affordable, available starting point.
- Shorter commitment: prefer the entry with the shorter equivalent campaign estimate, not a trophy-platinum estimate.
- Specific gameplay: choose the franchise whose representative loop you would willingly repeat.
- Multiplayer: confirm the exact mode, population and online requirement before paying.
- Lower current cost: compare the complete edition in your region at the time of purchase.
- Accessible entry: choose the title with the settings, difficulty options and standalone structure you need.
9. Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Choosing by franchise reputation
Problem: a famous series may contain experimental spin-offs or entries built for a different audience.
Fix: anchor the decision to one representative game and its repeated actions.
Best Value
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Comparing incompatible games
Problem: a short co-op spin-off is judged against a long single-player mainline game.
Fix: compare equivalent roles, modes and completion targets.
Ignoring order and spoilers
Problem: a prequel or late entry reveals information intended to land after earlier games.
Fix: record both release and chronological order, then select deliberately.
Treating tracker numbers as universal
Problem: trophy difficulty, time-to-platinum or a catalogue count is presented as a statement about every platform or player.
Fix: keep the source scope attached to each number. PlatPrices’ 2026 catalogue figure of 226 PlayStation franchises covers its tracked PS4 and PS5 listings, not the entire games market (PlatPrices series catalogue).
Trusting an old price
Problem: a sale has ended, the region differs or a bundle no longer includes the advertised expansion.
Fix: verify the live regional listing immediately before checkout.
Confusing “difficult” with “long”
Problem: a game can be short but demanding, or long but forgiving.
Fix: score challenge and time as separate criteria and identify the measurement used.
10. A printable pre-purchase checklist
- Constraints: platform, region, budget, available time, solo/co-op/competitive preference and content boundaries recorded.
- Representative entries: one specific game and edition selected for each franchise.
- Gameplay: core loop, pace, progression and optional content checked through current gameplay or detailed reviews.
- Story: release order, chronological order, reboots and required versus optional entries identified.
- Time and challenge: equivalent campaign or completionist estimates compared, with source limitations noted.
- Access: platform support, performance mode, accessibility settings and online requirements verified.
- Content: regional rating and descriptors checked for the exact title.
- Price: live store or retailer listing checked for currency, edition, included content and sale conditions.
- Decision: the chosen series passes every non-negotiable constraint and wins on the priorities you explicitly weighted.
When the two franchises remain close after this process, buy the representative entry with the clearest fit and the lowest commitment. You can then reassess the wider series after playing it; a franchise purchase does not require committing to every installment.
