On the manufacturers’ published peak-throughput figures, Xbox Series X is rated at 12 TFLOPS and PlayStation 5 at 10.3 TFLOPS; Xbox Series S is rated at 4 TFLOPS. That makes the Series X figure about 17% higher than PS5’s, but it is arithmetic on rounded specifications—not evidence that Xbox runs every game faster or produces better graphics.
What do GPU teraflops mean on Xbox and PlayStation?
A teraflop is one trillion floating-point operations per second. In console specifications, a GPU’s TFLOPS figure refers to theoretical peak throughput: a compact way to describe how many floating-point operations the graphics hardware could perform under specified conditions. It is useful for comparing headline specifications, but it is not a direct measurement of a game’s frame rate, resolution, or image quality.
How do the published GPU specifications compare?
| Console | GPU description | Compute units | Clock specification | Published peak figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Custom AMD RDNA 2 GPU | 52 | 1.825 GHz | 12 TFLOPS |
| PlayStation 5 | AMD RDNA 2-based graphics engine | 36 | Variable frequency, up to 2.23 GHz | 10.3 TFLOPS |
| Xbox Series S | Custom AMD RDNA 2 GPU | 20 | 1.565 GHz | 4 TFLOPS |
Microsoft lists the Xbox figures on its Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S specification pages. Sony gave the PS5 figure in its September 2020 launch announcement. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a shared independent test.
Is Xbox Series X more powerful than PS5?
For the narrow comparison of published peak GPU TFLOPS, Series X has the higher figure. Dividing 12 by 10.3 and subtracting one gives roughly 16.5%, commonly rounded to about 17%. Because the manufacturer figures are rounded, that percentage should also be treated as approximate—not as a measured gameplay advantage.

- UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
The configurations reach their headline totals differently: Series X lists more compute units at a lower clock, while PS5 lists fewer compute units and a higher maximum clock. A single peak-throughput figure compresses those inputs into one number; it does not establish how either GPU performs across all game workloads.
How is the theoretical TFLOPS figure calculated?
A common theoretical FP32 peak-throughput calculation is:

- Xbox Series X: 52 × 64 × 2 × 1.825 GHz = 12.14 TFLOPS, marketed as 12 TFLOPS.
- Xbox Series S: 20 × 64 × 2 × 1.565 GHz = 4.006 TFLOPS, marketed as 4 TFLOPS.
- PS5: 36 × 64 × 2 × 2.23 GHz = 10.28 TFLOPS at the stated maximum clock, marketed as 10.3 TFLOPS. Sony describes that frequency as variable and up to 2.23 GHz.
This arithmetic explains how the published theoretical figures relate to compute-unit counts and clock speeds. It is not an independent benchmark, and it does not predict the performance of a particular game.
Does a higher teraflop count mean better graphics or faster games?
No—not by itself. A game’s frame rate, resolution, and image quality depend on more than peak FP32 throughput, including how its workload uses the hardware and how the game is built for each console. The RDNA 2 labels and TFLOPS totals alone do not quantify architectural efficiency or prove a universal winner.

To compare actual results, look for evidence about the same game on both consoles and check what is being measured: resolution, frame rate, visual settings, and whether those results are measured or targeted. Without game-specific evidence, the defensible conclusion is limited to the specification comparison, not a blanket ranking of gameplay performance.

Series S provides useful context for the Xbox lineup: Microsoft lists it at 4 TFLOPS, with 20 compute units at 1.565 GHz, compared with Series X at 12 TFLOPS, 52 compute units, and 1.825 GHz. Those figures show a substantial difference in listed peak GPU throughput, but they do not by themselves describe every difference in games or predict a specific title’s performance.

Microsoft’s technical overview also uses a broader metaphor for its console design. Andrew Goossen, Technical Fellow on Xbox Series X at Microsoft, said: “The CPU is the brain of our new console and the GPU is the heart, but the Xbox Velocity Architecture is the soul.” That is a description of Microsoft’s design priorities, not a comparative benchmark.
