There is no universal winner: compare your channel’s actual YouTube Shopping commissions with the actual ad revenue reported for the same stream and the same period. Shopping earnings depend on qualifying purchases and the commission rate in effect when each purchase happens; livestream ad earnings depend on eligible ad opportunities that YouTube actually serves. Neither a product tag nor an ad slot guarantees income.

India is listed among the countries where eligible creators may access the YouTube Shopping affiliate program. That availability does not mean every channel qualifies. YouTube’s monetization overview also describes separate requirements for advertising revenue and other monetization features. Check your channel’s Earn or Shopping area in Studio and the current program terms; eligibility can depend on channel status, audience, and other restrictions.
How to compare your actual earnings
- Choose a matched period. Use the same dates for Shopping and stream ad revenue, and compare the same stream or a consistent set of streams. Keep the reporting windows and attribution periods aligned where the available analytics permit.
- Calculate Shopping earnings from eligible attributed purchases. Group purchase value by item or merchant, then apply the commission rate applicable on each purchase date. Include other eligible items from a merchant when YouTube attributes those purchases to a viewer following your product tag. Do not treat the rate currently displayed in Studio as a guaranteed rate for future purchases: YouTube says the displayed rate is an estimate and that the payout reflects the rate on the purchase date.
- Use reported ad revenue, not an assumed fill rate. Record the stream’s actual ad revenue for that period. Note whether monetization was enabled and whether mid-rolls were automatic or manual. Do not multiply 24 hours by a supposed universal hourly ad rate: YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.
- Compare net observed amounts and comparable time units. If your analytics support it, compare both totals and revenue per comparable hour or day. This is a practical way to make your own comparison, not a YouTube-published earnings formula.
- Separate the result from a forecast. A strong sales period, a particular merchant rate, or a change to mid-roll settings does not guarantee the same future result. Recheck rates and performance over more than one comparable period before relying on a projection.
Why Shopping commissions change
Shopping is purchase-based, not view-based. A tagged product can earn a commission when a viewer makes an eligible purchase, and YouTube says the creator may also receive commission on other eligible products from that merchant after the viewer follows the tag. The commission varies by item and brand, and rates can change. Review eligible offers and the current rate in YouTube Studio before you tag a product in your YouTube livestream.
For a live stream, YouTube’s guidance also asks creators to tell viewers when they earn commission and to recommend products they genuinely believe in. A product that fits the stream’s subject is more useful to viewers than a tag added solely in pursuit of a commission.

How livestream ads are delivered
On monetized livestreams with monetization enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-rolls can be inserted automatically or manually. These controls create opportunities for ads, but not a promise that every opportunity will fill.
YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour.” That is a platform-reported average, not a forecast for an individual channel, an India-specific result, or a result established for 24/7 streams. Treat it as context when considering automatic mid-rolls, not as a number to use in your earnings calculation.

Which earns more: YouTube Shopping commissions or livestream ads?
Your matched Studio data is the only sound basis for answering this for your channel. The official information cited here does not establish an India-specific expected RPM, ad fill rate, Shopping conversion rate, or guaranteed earnings per hour for a 24/7 stream. It also does not establish that running 24/7, by itself, increases either revenue source.
Shopping may contribute more in a period with qualifying attributed purchases and favorable applicable rates; ads may contribute more when YouTube serves ads and the reported revenue is higher. Those are possible outcomes, not general rules. Compare observed revenue across equivalent periods rather than assuming that longer airtime automatically improves either side.
