Compiling NGINX on a Linux VPS is a seven-stage operation: install a compiler and feature dependencies, download and verify an official release, unpack it, configure the build, compile with make, install with sudo make install, and then validate and supervise the resulting binary. A source build is worthwhile when you need a module, a non-default compile option, a patched dependency, or reproducible build inputs. If you do not need that control, a distribution package usually creates less update and rollback work.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Decide whether a source build is justified
A package-managed NGINX installation is normally the lower-maintenance choice. Distribution repositories handle file ownership, service integration, dependency updates, and routine replacement of vulnerable builds. Compiling yourself trades that convenience for control over modules, compiler options, installation paths, and the exact source and dependency versions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Choose a source build when at least one of these requirements is real:
- You need an official or third-party module that is absent from the distribution package.
- You need a specific configure option, connection-processing choice, or filesystem layout.
- You must build against a controlled or patched dependency.
- You need a reproducible build whose inputs and compiler settings can be audited.
Do not assume compilation automatically improves throughput. The available official guidance does not publish a universal performance gain, compile-time figure, CPU/RAM recommendation, or benchmark for source-built NGINX. Treat the build as an operational change, not as a guaranteed speed upgrade.

Prepare the VPS and choose a maintenance policy
Use a supported Linux image with a working package manager, sudo access, enough free disk for the archive, extracted source, object files, and logs, and a plan for security updates. Build in a non-production directory such as /usr/local/src and install into a dedicated prefix so the result is distinguishable from a distribution package.
Before downloading anything, write down:
- The NGINX release you intend to install.
- The reason for compiling instead of using the official package route.
- The intended prefix, executable path, configuration path, PID path, log locations, document root, and listening ports.
- The modules and protocol features the workload actually needs.
- Who will own future patching, rebuilds, testing, and rollback.
A source installation creates an update responsibility. Keep the previous working build until the replacement has passed configuration and smoke tests, and make sure your service supervisor can be pointed back to it.

Install the compiler and feature dependencies
The build requires a GNU C compiler and Make. NGINX also needs development headers or source trees for the features you enable. PCRE or PCRE2 provides regular-expression support; zlib is used for compression-related integration; and OpenSSL is required when you enable HTTPS support with --with-http_ssl_module.
Package names differ between releases, so check the target VPS release before running an install command. Typical package-manager commands are:
# Debian or Ubuntu family (confirm names on the target release)
sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essential libpcre2-dev zlib1g-dev libssl-dev
# RHEL, Rocky, Alma, Fedora or another RHEL-family system
sudo dnf group install "Development Tools"
sudo dnf install pcre2-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel
Some systems provide PCRE compatibility packages rather than PCRE2 development packages. Match the development package to the NGINX release and the configure options you will use. If you plan to compile a dependency from its own source tree, keep that source directory and its version in your build record instead of relying on an untracked copy.
Install only what the selected modules require. A minimal HTTP build may not need the same dependency set as a build with TLS, compression, stream, mail, debug, or third-party modules.
Download and verify an official NGINX release
Obtain the exact release archive from the official NGINX distribution site. Pin the version rather than using an untracked “latest” download in production. Keep the archive, its checksum or signature, and the verification output with the build notes.

A typical verification sequence, after downloading the release’s published verification material, is:
cd /usr/local/src
sha256sum nginx-<version>.tar.gz
# Compare the printed digest with the value published for that release.
# If a signature is supplied, verify it with the corresponding trusted key.
Replace the version token with the release you selected; do not copy an example token into a production command. Record the exact NGINX version and the versions of PCRE/PCRE2, zlib, OpenSSL, the compiler, and Make. Verification proves that the archive you received matches the release material; it does not by itself prove that every dependency or build tool is trustworthy.
Unpack the source and inspect available options
Extract the verified archive and enter the resulting directory:

./configure --help
The ./configure script selects installation paths, compiler settings, connection-processing choices, and enabled modules. It finishes by generating the Makefile that make will use. Read the help output for the exact release you downloaded; option availability can change between releases.
Build an explicit configure command
Keep the complete configure command in version control or in the same build record as the archive checksum. Explicit paths prevent a service file or automation from silently targeting a different NGINX installation.
| Option | What it controls | Value or example |
|---|---|---|
--prefix |
Base installation directory | Defaults to /usr/local/nginx |
--sbin-path |
Installed NGINX executable | Choose the exact path your supervisor will execute |
--conf-path |
Main configuration file | Choose the path your tests and service unit will use |
--pid-path |
PID file location | For example, a path under /run managed by the operating system |
--with-http_ssl_module |
HTTPS support | Enable when serving TLS; requires OpenSSL integration |
--with-http_v2_module |
HTTP/2 support in releases that provide this option | Enable only when the installed release and workload require it |
--with-stream |
Stream proxying | Enable for TCP/UDP stream workloads |
--with-pcre |
Build with a specified PCRE source tree | Point to the dependency source directory when embedding it |
--with-zlib |
Build with a specified zlib source tree | Point to the dependency source directory when embedding it |
--add-dynamic-module |
Compile a dynamic module outside the NGINX source tree | Use the module’s absolute source path |
For example, this pattern gives the binary, configuration, and PID file deliberate locations while enabling common web features:
./configure
--prefix=/usr/local/nginx
--sbin-path=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx
--conf-path=/usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
--pid-path=/run/nginx.pid
--with-http_ssl_module
--with-http_v2_module
The example deliberately omits dependency-source paths and optional modules. Add --with-pcre=/absolute/path/to/the/pcre-source or --with-zlib=/absolute/path/to/the/zlib-source only when you have chosen to build those dependencies from source. Add stream, mail, debug, or third-party module options only after checking that the release supports them and that the application needs them. Do not copy an example path or version literally.

When the script reports a missing header or library, read the diagnostic, install the matching development package for the target distribution, and rerun configure. Do not proceed to make after an unsuccessful configure step.
Compile and install without mixing privilege levels
Run the compilation as the normal build user where possible, then elevate only for the filesystem write:
make -j$(getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN)
sudo make install
The parallel-job expression is a convenience, not an NGINX requirement. A small VPS may run out of memory when too many compiler jobs run at once; reduce the number after -j or omit parallelism if the machine is constrained.
Preserve the build log, the configure summary, and the generated Makefile. If installation fails because a destination is not writable, stop and correct the prefix or permissions rather than running the entire build as root. Installing under a dedicated prefix makes it easier to distinguish this build from a package-managed copy and to retain an older prefix for rollback.

Confirm the installed binary and configuration paths
Never create automation from memory of the configure command. Ask the installed binary what it was built with:
/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -V 2>&1
Check the printed configure arguments, especially --prefix, --sbin-path, --conf-path, --pid-path, and module flags. If a different nginx appears first in $PATH, use the absolute path until you have deliberately configured the system-wide command.

sudo /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -t -c /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
The test must reference the same configuration path your service supervisor will use. Confirm that the PID directory, log directories, document root, certificate and key paths, temporary directories, and included configuration files exist and have suitable ownership and permissions. A syntax pass does not guarantee that a certificate is valid, an upstream is reachable, or a firewall allows the intended port, so perform a small local request after startup.
Start NGINX under explicit service supervision
The basic official start command is sudo nginx, but a VPS should normally use its distribution’s service manager or another supervisor so that stop, reload, restart, boot activation, and failure handling are explicit. Unit syntax and default hardening differ by distribution; adapt the following systemd pattern to the paths reported by nginx -V.
[Unit]
Description=NGINX built from source
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=forking
ExecStartPre=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -t -c /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
ExecStart=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -c /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
ExecReload=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -s reload
ExecStop=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -s quit
PIDFile=/run/nginx.pid
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Save the unit in the location used by the target distribution, reload the service-manager configuration, start it, and inspect its status and journal. Enable it at boot only after a successful manual start and local request. If your build uses a different PID or configuration path, change every corresponding directive together; a mismatch is a common reason for a service that appears to start but cannot be reloaded or stopped.
Use a graceful reload after configuration changes so existing connections can finish:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate, update, and roll back a custom build
For each build, retain a record containing:
- The archive filename, release version, checksum or signature result, and download date.
- The full configure command and the output of
nginx -V. - Compiler, Make, OpenSSL, PCRE/PCRE2, and zlib versions.
- The installation prefix, executable path, configuration path, PID path, module list, and service-unit revision.
- Configuration-test output and a basic request or health-check result.
For an upgrade, compile into a new staging prefix rather than overwriting the running tree. Run the new binary’s configuration test against a copied or explicitly selected configuration, check dynamic-module compatibility, and perform a local smoke test. Switch the service target to the new binary only after those checks pass. Keep the old prefix and its recorded command until the replacement has survived your normal observation period.
To roll back, stop or reload through the supervisor, point its executable and PID/configuration paths back to the previous known-good build, run that build’s configuration test, and start it. A rollback is much safer when each build has an immutable directory and the service file does not rely on an ambiguous $PATH.

Track NGINX and OpenSSL security advisories and schedule rebuilds when either requires an update. A source build can incorporate current patches and selected modules, but it does not deliver updates automatically; the owner of the build must repeat the verification, configure, compile, test, and deployment cycle.
Source compilation versus an official package
| Decision area | Source compilation | Official package |
|---|---|---|
| Module and compile customization | Choose official or third-party modules, paths, and compiler options at build time. | Use the modules and options selected by the distributor or repository maintainer. |
| Updates | You must monitor advisories, rebuild, test, and deploy each update. | Repository tools provide a simpler update path and package metadata. |
| Rollback | Requires retained prefixes, recorded inputs, and deliberate service switching. | Package-manager versions and service integration generally reduce manual work. |
| Reproducibility and auditability | Strong when source archives, configure arguments, toolchain versions, and dependency versions are recorded. | Relies on the distributor’s build and repository history. |
| Filesystem and service integration | You select paths and must create or adapt supervision, permissions, log handling, and boot activation. | Distribution conventions and service files are normally supplied. |
| Dependency maintenance | You are responsible for the libraries and headers selected at build time, including OpenSSL security updates. | The package ecosystem tracks dependencies through its normal update process. |
| Best fit | Custom modules, non-default features, patched dependencies, or controlled builds. | Deployments where predictable maintenance and repository updates matter more than customisation. |
Official NGINX guidance describes source compilation as more flexible because it can add specific modules and apply current security patches, while package installation reduces maintenance effort through repository-based updates. Make the choice per workload and change-control policy, not from an assumed performance benefit.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
Configure stops on a missing library or header
Read the final diagnostic and identify the feature that triggered it. Install that feature’s development package for the exact Linux release, or provide the absolute source-tree path required by the configure option. Re-run ./configure from the source directory and keep the successful summary. Do not hide the problem by removing a module that the application requires.
The wrong NGINX binary is running
Use the absolute executable path and compare its -V output with the process and service unit. Multiple package and source installations can coexist; a shell alias or an earlier directory in $PATH can select the wrong one. Correct the service’s ExecStart, the configuration path, and the operator documentation together.
Configuration testing succeeds but startup fails
Check the service journal and verify the PID directory, log directories, certificate permissions, included files, and listening ports. A syntax test cannot reserve a port or prove that a runtime directory exists after reboot. Make the service create or receive required runtime directories according to the target distribution’s conventions.

Compare the PID path in nginx -V, the configuration file, and the service unit. Sending a signal through -s reload or -s quit only works when the command resolves the same PID file as the running master process.
The VPS runs out of memory during compilation
Lower the make job count, close other memory-heavy workloads, or compile during a maintenance window. Parallel compilation is optional; a slower serial build is preferable to an unstable VPS.
A third-party dynamic module fails after an upgrade
Rebuild the module against the new NGINX source and review the new binary’s configure arguments. Keep the old module and NGINX prefix available until the replacement has passed a configuration test and smoke test.
Build checklist
- Confirm sudo access, disk space, a supported Linux release, and a reason to compile.
- Install GNU C, Make, and development dependencies for the selected modules.
- Download a pinned official release and verify its checksum or signature.
- Record NGINX and dependency versions before extracting the archive.
- Run
./configure --helpand select only required paths and modules. - Save the complete configure command and successful summary.
- Compile as the normal user with a VPS-appropriate job count.
- Install with
sudo make installinto the dedicated prefix. - Use the installed binary’s
-Voutput to confirm paths and modules. - Run
nginx -tagainst the exact configuration used by the supervisor. - Verify runtime directories, ownership, certificates, logs, document root, and ports.
- Start under an explicit service supervisor and perform a local request.
- Record all inputs, retain the previous build, and plan advisory-driven rebuilds.
The Bottom Line
Compile NGINX from source only when the control over modules, options, dependencies, or reproducibility justifies owning the entire update and rollback process. A pinned archive, explicit configure command, verified install paths, pre-start configuration test, and deliberate service supervision turn the build into a repeatable deployment instead of an unmanaged custom binary.
