Find Squint at the Old Mill

Speak with the Gaffer in Zalissya. He directs Skif to look for Squint, who may know something about Solder.

Leave Zalissya by the northern road and head east toward the warehouse area. Look for the radiation-hazard signs mentioned in the mission objective; the search leads to the Old Mill.

Check the stairs as you approach Squint. Traps are set on the ascent, so disarm them before continuing.

Choose whether to help or kill Squint
How you handle Squint determines whether you can pursue the optional artifact branch. Decide before attacking: killing him before speaking closes the “Piece of Cake” path, according to Prima Games.
Help Squint and retrieve the Mold artifact

Talk to Squint and agree to help him escape. This starts “Piece of Cake” and sends you to a nearby cave.

Be ready for an invisible Bloodsucker in the cave. Use the Echo Scanner around the acid puddles to locate the Mold artifact.

Return the Mold to Squint. He gives you the Ward Sensors.

Prima Games also reports that retrieving the artifact first and then killing Squint can leave you with both the Mold and the sensors. Treat this as a guide-reported option rather than a guaranteed outcome.
Kill Squint for the sensors immediately
If you do not want to complete the cave objective, kill Squint and loot the Ward Sensors from him. This gets the mission item without the artifact detour, but ends access to the optional “Piece of Cake” branch.

Choose where to take the Ward Sensors
Return to Zalissya and give the sensors to Richter or Captain Zotov. The main reward is reported as the same either way, but the choice changes later route or mission details.

| Richter | Game8 reports a stalker-aligned outcome in which the Wardens do not crack down on stalkers in Zalissya. |
Game8 also says the recipient affects whether you leave by the North or Western Checkpoint. These are guide-reported consequences; later quest state may depend on broader progression.

Mission rewards
Game8 lists a Debut Suit, an Optician Gas Mask, and 2,000 Coupons on Stalker difficulty. The 2,000-Coupon figure is specifically tied to that difficulty in Game8’s 2024 guide; it should not be assumed to apply on every difficulty. Gamer Guides also lists the suit and gas mask and reports that the reward is the same whichever NPC receives the sensors.
If the quest does not progress
Official patch notes document fixes for mission-related issues: Patch 1.0.1 resolved a Zotov dialogue loop, and Update 1.7 fixed a problem that could make Squint’s body inaccessible after killing him without starting dialogue. These fixes do not establish that every platform or installed build is free of quest bugs. If you hit a blocker, check the installed game version and the journal’s current objective before retrying a branch.
