Season 15, Season of Hell’s Legacy, has a five-quest introductory storyline in Diablo IV game. Start in Tarsarak, follow the investigation to the Imperial Library, complete three Waking Nightmare branches tied to Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, then finish Legacy of Hope. The finale lets you place the last Splinter and choose one of the three Prime Evil Powers.
The complete order is Refuge From The Memories, The Horadrim’s Fate, The Burning Shepherd, The Brother’s Keeper, and Legacy of Hope. The route awards the Splinters of Destruction, Hatred, and Terror, plus experience and gold, and opens the reputation and War Plans progression that continues after the story.

Season 15 questline at a glance
Season of Hell’s Legacy is built around Waking Nightmares, Soul Splinters, and Prime Evil powers. The introductory line teaches the Nightmare activities while sending you through three themed branches. You must complete each branch before the final quest becomes available.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Refuge From The Memories | Tarsarak, Kuhuthi’s Tavern, then the Imperial Library | Introduces the season’s mystery and brings you to Deckard Cain |
| 2 | The Horadrim’s Fate | Fractured Peaks and the Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare | Defeat Echo of Baal and claim the Splinter of Destruction |
| 3 | The Burning Shepherd | Hawezar, Travincal, and the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare | Defeat Echo of Mephisto and claim the Splinter of Hatred |

What you need before starting
Use a character participating in Season 15 content and travel to Tarsarak, where the first quest begins. The published quest information does not state a separate level threshold or a required World Tier, so do not assume a level number that is not shown in your quest log. If the seasonal introduction is not appearing, confirm that you are on the intended seasonal character and that you have entered Tarsarak rather than another town.
Keep enough inventory space for quest items and the Splinters you collect. The objectives move between regions and Nightmare instances, so read the active quest text after every major hand-in instead of travelling to the previous location by habit.
Quest 1: Refuge From The Memories
Enter Kuhuthi’s Tavern
- Travel to Tarsarak and enter Kuhuthi’s Tavern.
- Investigate the cloaked stranger inside. The investigation triggers a demon encounter.
- Defeat the demons that appear.
Meet Deckard Cain
- Speak with Deckard Cain after the tavern fight.
- Travel to the Imperial Library and meet Cain there.
- Use the next objective in the Imperial Library to begin The Horadrim’s Fate.
This opening quest is a short setup rather than a farming activity. Its practical purpose is to establish the Imperial Library as your seasonal hub and point you toward the first Nightmare branch.

Quest 2: The Horadrim’s Fate
Find Tal Rasha in Fractured Peaks
- Meet Cain at the Imperial Library if you have not already done so.
- Travel to Fractured Peaks and search for Tal Rasha.
- Defeat Tal Rasha to open the next objective.
Clear the Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare
- Enter the Diablo II Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare.
- Fight through the instance and defeat the Ancients.
- Pursue the Echo of Baal and defeat it.
- Claim the Splinter of Destruction when the encounter is complete.
The Baal branch is the first of the three major routes. Its destination is Worldstone Keep, and its reward is the Destruction Splinter. Keep the Splinter in your inventory or follow the quest marker immediately; the next story hand-in returns you to Cain before the second branch.

Quest 3: The Burning Shepherd
Reach Sankekur in Hawezar
- Return to the Imperial Library and speak with Cain.
- Travel to Hawezar to find Sankekur.
- Defeat Sankekur. This encounter opens the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare.
Assemble Khalim’s Will
- Enter Travincal and collect all four components of Khalim’s Will.
- Combine or use the components as the objective directs to open the Durance entrance.
- Enter the Durance of Hate and reach Level 3.
Defeat Echo of Mephisto
- Fight through Durance of Hate Level 3.
- Defeat Echo of Mephisto.
- Return to Sankekur and collect the Splinter of Hatred.
The four Khalim’s Will components are a progression gate, not optional loot. If the Durance entrance is unavailable, check that all four components have been collected and that the objective has updated before attempting to enter. Hatred is the Mephisto branch’s major Splinter and carries the story forward to Scosglen.
Quest 4: The Brother’s Keeper
Find Aidan on the Strand
- Travel to the Strand in Scosglen.
- Find Aidan and defeat him.
- Enter the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare that opens after the encounter.
Handle Diablo’s invulnerability
- Fight through the Diablo Labyrinth until you reach the Diablo encounter.
- When Diablo becomes invulnerable, locate and destroy the Portals of Darkness.
- Return to the boss after the portals are destroyed and continue the fight.
- Defeat Echo of Diablo.
Collect the final major Splinter
- Speak with Aidan after the Echo of Diablo encounter.
- Collect the Splinter of Terror.
- Return to the Imperial Library to begin Legacy of Hope.
The Portal of Darkness mechanic is the important encounter check in this branch. Attacking an invulnerable Diablo without removing the portals will not advance the fight, so use the period of immunity to search the arena rather than spending resources on ineffective attacks.
How the three Nightmare branches differ
All three branches are required for the introductory storyline, but each sends you to a different classic location and awards a different Splinter. This table is useful when checking which branch remains in your journal.
| Branch | Starting region | Waking Nightmare | Boss echo | Splinter | Progression it opens |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baal | Fractured Peaks | Diablo II Worldstone Keep | Echo of Baal | Destruction | Destruction-linked reputation and War Plan activities |
| Mephisto | Hawezar | Durance of Hate | Echo of Mephisto | Hatred | Hatred-linked reputation and War Plan activities |
| Diablo | Scosglen’s Strand | Diablo Labyrinth | Echo of Diablo | Terror | Terror-linked reputation and War Plan activities |
The post-quest reputation and War Plan paths are tied to the Splinter theme you pursue. The table identifies the association; it does not mean the introductory story awards three separate Prime Evil powers immediately.

Quest 5: Legacy of Hope and the Prime Evil Power choice
Place the final Splinter
- Return to the Imperial Library after collecting Terror.
- Place the final Splinter beside the other two Splinters.
- Speak with Deckard Cain.
Choose one power
- Use the choice presented by the completed Splinter arrangement.
- Select one Splinter: Destruction, Hatred, or Terror.
- Confirm the selection to complete Legacy of Hope and unlock the associated Prime Evil Power.
This is the point at which the seasonal system opens. The storyline has shown you all three Splinter themes, but the finale asks you to bear one chosen Splinter’s associated power. The available evidence establishes the choice and unlock, but does not state that the selection can be changed later; treat the confirmation screen as a meaningful decision and read its description before accepting.
What rewards the questline gives you
Direct quest rewards
- Experience and gold from completing the quests and their combat objectives.
- Splinter of Destruction from the Baal branch.
- Splinter of Hatred from the Mephisto branch.
- Splinter of Terror from the Diablo branch.
- Access to the Prime Evil Powers system after Legacy of Hope.
Seasonal-system rewards
The three major Splinters are the named storyline rewards. Season 15 also uses Soul Splinters as ability-like effects with advantages and drawbacks, so the power you select is part of a wider build and progression system rather than a conventional equipment drop. Blizzard’s overview ties seasonal progression rewards to the Season of Hell’s Legacy Reliquary. The questline unlocks the system; it does not by itself grant every Reliquary reward.

Build reputation with your chosen Splinter
After the finale, continue with activities associated with the Splinter you selected. These activities advance Splinter reputation, which is the next layer of seasonal progression after the introductory quests. Follow the activity descriptions in the seasonal interface so that your time is spent on the reputation track you actually want to develop.

Use War Plans for modifiers and upgrades
War Plans provide additional modifiers and upgrades as your seasonal progression continues. They are not a replacement for the three introductory branches: they are the system that extends progression after the Imperial Library finale. Review the available War Plans before committing resources, especially when a modifier changes how your chosen Prime Evil Power functions.

Plan around benefits and drawbacks
Soul Splinters and Prime Evil powers are designed around trade-offs. Compare the benefit shown in the power description with its drawback and with the role your character already fills. A power that looks stronger in isolation may be less useful if its drawback conflicts with your defenses, resource generation, or preferred combat range.
Troubleshooting the questline
The next quest is not appearing
- Return to the Imperial Library and speak with Deckard Cain after every major branch.
- Check that the previous boss was defeated and that its Splinter was collected.
- Read the active objective for the required region; the story alternates between the library and remote zones.
- Make sure you are using the seasonal character and seasonal game context intended for Season 15.
The Waking Nightmare entrance is unavailable
- For Durance of Hate, verify that Sankekur was defeated and all four Khalim’s Will components were collected in Travincal.
- For Worldstone Keep, confirm that Tal Rasha’s encounter was completed before travelling to the Nightmare.
- For the Diablo Labyrinth, confirm that Aidan was defeated on the Strand.
A boss cannot be damaged
During the Diablo encounter, invulnerability is resolved by destroying the Portals of Darkness. The published walkthrough does not identify an equivalent portal mechanic for Echo of Baal or Echo of Mephisto, so follow the objective text and arena prompts in those fights rather than applying Diablo’s mechanic to every boss.
You do not know which Splinter to choose
Use the choice screen to compare the three descriptions. Destruction represents Baal, Hatred represents Mephisto, and Terror represents Diablo. Select the effect that best fits the character and activities you intend to play, then continue its associated reputation and War Plan path.
Completion checklist
- Complete Refuge From The Memories in Tarsarak.
- Complete The Horadrim’s Fate, clear Worldstone Keep, defeat Echo of Baal, and claim Destruction.
- Complete The Burning Shepherd, assemble Khalim’s Will, clear Durance of Hate, defeat Echo of Mephisto, and claim Hatred.
- Complete The Brother’s Keeper, clear the Diablo Labyrinth, destroy Portals of Darkness during Diablo’s immunity, defeat Echo of Diablo, and claim Terror.
- Complete Legacy of Hope in the Imperial Library.
- Choose one Prime Evil Power.
- Continue with the chosen Splinter’s reputation activities and War Plans.
ProGameTalk’s September 17, 2026 walkthrough identifies these five quests as the complete introductory line. Blizzard’s 2026 overview places the line within Season of Hell’s Legacy and describes the Soul Splinter and Reliquary systems that follow it.
