In Chapter 2, find Man-in-Stone near Squall Hideout, defeat Mother of Stones for the Stone Essence, then return and defeat Man-in-Stone to earn the Azure Dust transformation. Rest afterward and speak to him again to unlock his shop.
Find Man-in-Stone at Squall Hideout
The quest takes place in Chapter 2, in Yellow Wind Ridge’s Fright Cliff area. At the Squall Hideout Keeper’s Shrine, follow the ravine route to the right to find Man-in-Stone. He asks you to deal with nearby rock creatures and directs you toward a cave. The quest does not provide a conventional waypoint trail, so use the shrine and cave landmarks to navigate. Find and defeat Mother of Stones
From Squall Hideout, enter the nearby cave network and continue toward the Rockrest Flat area. Follow the deeper passage until you reach a crystal-bearing rock formation, then strike it to reveal Mother of Stones. The turn-by-turn descriptions in guides vary, so follow the cave passages and look for the crystal formation rather than relying on a precise sequence of turns. Mother of Stones is stationary, but other rock guai can interfere with your attacks. Clear or manage those enemies before settling into a sustained attack on the boss. Defeating Mother of Stones gives you the Stone Essence key item.

Return the Stone Essence and defeat Man-in-Stone
- Return to Man-in-Stone at the ravine near Squall Hideout.
- Talk to him and hand over the Stone Essence.
- When he turns hostile, attack and defeat him to finish the quest sequence.
The reward is Azure Dust, a transformation that lets the Destined One take a rock-guai form. GameSpot describes the form as immune to negative status effects and able to ram enemies; that does not establish it as the best choice for every fight.

After defeating him, rest once, then return and speak to Man-in-Stone again to access his merchant inventory. GameSpot and PC Gamer report stock that includes Blood of the Iron Bull, Gold Ridge Beast, Iron Pellet, Goldflora Hairpin, and Sobering Stone. Exact inventory and prices may depend on game version, so check the shop in your game for current values.

Sobering Stone is associated with the separate Yellow-Robed Squire quest. Buying it from Man-in-Stone is not required to complete this quest’s fight sequence.
