To complete “What Lurks Beyond the Pines,” finish “The Beast Within,” speak with Eli at Town Hall, then retrieve the Cave Spare Key from William’s cabin in the National Park. Inside the cave, reconnect four explosives, repairing the broken third cable, then follow the underwater bubbles out and report back to Eli. The reported rewards are William’s Knife, two Beginner Manual pages and 10,000 XP.
How to start the side quest
- Complete the main mission “The Beast Within.”
- Go to the Town Hall safe zone in Old Town and speak with Eli in the meeting room. He directs you to his family cabin in the National Park.
- At the cabin, interact with the map on the table to collect the Cave Spare Key. Optional notes are also inside.
- Follow the uphill route from the cabin to the cave gate and use the key. Continue through the cave until you find William.
How to reconnect the four explosives
William asks you to reconnect four charges. Take the cable spool near him, then follow the cable routes through the cave. The third cable is damaged and must be repaired before you can finish connecting the charges.
First charge
Carry the cable across the platforms on the cave wall to the first charge and connect it.
Second charge
Climb the white-marked holds and jump to the opposite wall where the route requires it. Continue along the cable to the second charge.

Third charge: repair the broken cable
Trace the third cable to its damaged section and repair it. Then continue following the line to its spool. Crouch and limit flashlight use in the dangerous stretch, where dormant Infected and Volatiles may be nearby.
Fourth charge
Continue toward the final charge. Take the higher route using the white-marked holds and ladder, then attach the cable to the fourth charge.
How to escape the cave
- Return to the overlook and speak with William.
- Follow the forward route as the cave collapses.
- In the underwater tunnels, use rising bubbles to choose the way through junctions. Surface at the indicated breathing area, then continue to the exit.
How to finish the quest and collect rewards
Return to Town Hall and report to Eli. Walkthroughs report the completion rewards as William’s Knife, two Beginner Manual pages and 10,000 XP. The concluding dialogue choice with Eli does not change the outcome or the listed rewards.
