To remove ReShade from a Windows game, run the official ReShade Setup program against the game’s actual executable and choose its uninstall or removal option. If that is unavailable, remove the ReShade-owned rendering-wrapper DLL, configuration files, shader folder, and optional add-ons from the correct installation directory. Then verify the game’s files if it still will not launch.
This normally removes ReShade without reinstalling the game. Vulkan, DXVK, OpenXR, Proton, mod-manager, and third-party preset installations can use different locations and require extra checks.
Before removing ReShade
- Close the game completely, along with its launcher.
- Back up any presets you may want to keep. Presets are usually
.inifiles and are separate from the injector itself. - Determine whether ReShade was installed with the official setup tool, a mod manager, or a graphics-mod package.
- Check the game’s current multiplayer and anti-cheat rules. Policies vary by game; for example, Facepunch says ReShade has been prohibited in Rust since January 13, 2025.
For Steam games, open Library → right-click the game → Manage or Properties → Installed Files → Browse. The correct folder is the one containing the executable that actually launches the game—not necessarily the launcher executable.
Rust’s official support instructions use this Steam path before removing ReShade and verifying the installation.

The safest method: use ReShade Setup
- Open the official ReShade Setup executable. Use the same installer where possible, or obtain the current setup program from the official ReShade website.
- Browse to the game’s actual executable.
- Select the rendering API ReShade was installed for if the program asks you to choose one.
- Select the uninstall or removal option.
- Complete the wizard.
The exact button text can differ between releases. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the setup program for automatic removal, and the current setup source includes an uninstall operation. The 6.7-series release notes also document changes to setup-tool behavior, so do not rely on screenshots from an older guide.
Using the setup tool is preferable to guessing which DLL to delete because it can identify the target executable and rendering API. It may not remove every preset, third-party shader pack, or add-on, so inspect the directory afterward.
Manual removal checklist
Manual cleanup is appropriate when the original installer is unavailable, but first confirm that each file belongs to ReShade. In the game directory—and relevant subfolders such as bin, Binaries, Win64, Win32, or x64—look for:

The core file is the rendering wrapper. Deleting only ReShade.ini resets or removes settings but does not necessarily stop the overlay. A minimal uninstall removes the injector and keeps presets for possible future use. A complete cleanup also removes the configuration, shader, log, and add-on files.

Common wrapper DLL names
Depending on the game and rendering API, ReShade may use one of these names:
d3d8.dlld3d9.dlld3d10.dlld3d11.dlld3d12.dlldxgi.dllddraw.dllopengl32.dll
Do not delete a DLL solely because its name appears on this list. These names can belong to the game, Windows, or another graphics mod. Right-click the candidate file, choose Properties → Details, and check its Product name, Company, and File description. Delete it only when the metadata identifies it as ReShade or the official setup tool confirms it.
As a safe inventory aid, PowerShell can list candidates without deleting anything:

Vulkan, DXVK, OpenXR, and unusual installations
The traditional “delete dxgi.dll” advice is incomplete. ReShade’s setup tool handles Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10/11/12 or DXGI, DirectDraw, OpenGL, Vulkan, and OpenXR-related targets. It can also detect DXVK and redirect handling toward Vulkan. Older Direct3D 8 games may use a separate d3d8to9 wrapper.
For Vulkan installations, the current setup source uses shared modules named ReShade32.dll and ReShade64.dll under a shared Windows common-application-data location. Removing a game-local dxgi.dll therefore may not remove Vulkan ReShade.
Prefer rerunning ReShade Setup against the same executable. If you must clean up manually, inspect the shared ReShade directory only after confirming that it belongs to ReShade and that no other ReShade installation still uses it. Do not delete an entire shared application-data folder indiscriminately.
OpenXR, DXVK, launcher-specific installations, and community mod packages may place files in nonstandard paths. Follow the package’s removal instructions and check the executable and subdirectories used by the game.

If ReShade still appears
- Exit everything. Make sure the game process is not still running.
- Check the actual executable. A launcher may start a second executable, a test build, or a different architecture.
- Inspect subfolders. Look in
bin,Binaries,Win64,Win32, and similar folders. - Search the game directory. Look for ReShade configuration files,
reshade-shaders, logs, and verified ReShade-owned wrapper DLLs. - Check mod managers. A preset installer or graphics-mod package may reinstall ReShade when the game launches.
- Check alternate rendering modes. DirectX, Vulkan, DXVK, and OpenXR can use different files.
An overlay disappearing while the folder remains does not necessarily indicate failure. It may mean the injector was removed successfully while presets, shaders, or logs were left behind.
If the game will not launch afterward
- Restore any accidentally deleted file from the Recycle Bin.
- Use the game launcher’s file-verification or repair feature.
- Reinstall only the damaged wrapper or mod if the game requires it.
- Review the game developer’s support documentation.
Do not delete Windows DirectX files or arbitrary system copies of opengl32.dll, dxgi.dll, or other API libraries. A crash after removal may also be caused by another mod, overlay, anti-cheat component, graphics-driver issue, or launcher problem. For Rust, the official procedure specifically calls for removing ReShade files and then verifying the game through Steam.
Verification restores missing or modified official game files, but it may not remove user-created presets, shader repositories, add-ons, or shared Vulkan files. If ReShade returns after verification, remove or disable the mod package that supplied it first.

A typical Direct3D or OpenGL installation places the wrapper beside the target game executable or in an API-specific game subdirectory. It normally does not require deleting Windows system files, DirectX components, or registry entries; ReShade’s official forum guidance describes the standard setup this way.

That is not universal for every target. Current setup-tool source shows shared application-data handling for Vulkan-related installations, while third-party installers and Proton scripts may use their own paths. Do not search the entire Windows drive and delete every file named dxgi.dll or opengl32.dll.
Linux and Steam Proton
Proton installations are not the same as the standard Windows procedure. ReShade-related files may be inside the game’s Proton prefix, linked through symlinks, or controlled by environment variables such as WINEDLLOVERRIDES. Community tooling, including the reshade-steam-proton script, documents those arrangements. Remove the files, links, and environment-variable settings created by the specific community method you used; do not apply the Windows DLL checklist blindly.
Minimal uninstall or complete cleanup?
- Keep presets: Remove the ReShade injector but retain preset
.inifiles and shader folders for a later reinstall. - Remove ReShade completely: Delete the verified wrapper, ReShade configuration and preset files,
reshade-shaders, logs, add-ons, and add-on data. - Preserve other mods: Keep any DLL, shader, or configuration file whose ownership is not clearly ReShade.
Reinstalling the entire game is a last resort. It takes longer, may remove unrelated mods, and may still leave external mod-manager or shared Vulkan files behind.
Final verification
- ReShade’s startup banner or overlay no longer appears.
- The game launches using its normal rendering path.
- No ReShade-owned wrapper or configuration files remain in the relevant game directories.
- Any shared Vulkan installation has been removed only after confirming that it is not needed elsewhere.
- The launcher’s file verification completes successfully.
- The game’s current anti-cheat policy has been checked before reinstalling ReShade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to reinstall DirectX to remove ReShade?
No. A normal ReShade installation does not require replacing Windows DirectX or registry entries. Remove the game-specific ReShade installation instead.
Does Steam file verification remove ReShade?
Not reliably. Verification can restore damaged official files, but presets, shader folders, add-ons, and external or shared ReShade files may remain.
Does uninstalling ReShade undo an anti-cheat ban?
No. Removing the files may resolve a launch requirement, but it cannot reverse an account action. Follow the individual game’s current support and appeal procedures.
Why is ReShade still present after deleting dxgi.dll?
The game may use another wrapper name, a different executable or subdirectory, Vulkan, DXVK, OpenXR, or a mod package that reinstalls ReShade.
