A PS5 that cannot connect to online services is usually affected by a PSN outage, a game-server problem, a local network failure, router or ISP restrictions, or an account issue. Start with three checks: view the official PSN status page, run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, then try another game or a wired connection. Do not begin with DNS changes, port forwarding, or a factory reset.
Use this three-minute diagnostic path first
- Check whether PlayStation Network is reporting an incident or maintenance.
- Run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection and record the result, NAT type, speeds, and any error code.
- Try Ethernet if you normally use Wi-Fi.
- Open another online game. If practical, test the PS5 on a phone hotspot.
These comparisons quickly identify whether the problem is PSN-wide, limited to one game, caused by your home network, or tied to the console or account.
1. Check PSN and the individual game
Visit the live PlayStation Network status page. It separates account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. Do not assume PSN is down based only on the message on your screen; service status changes continuously.
If PSN is operating normally but one game will not connect, check that publisher’s server-status page and maintenance announcements. PSN can be working while a game’s authentication service is offline, under maintenance, or requiring a separate publisher account.

If a confirmed outage is affecting the service you need, wait and monitor it rather than changing router settings. PlayStation also recommends checking both PSN status and the game’s own website for relevant errors.
2. Interpret the PS5 connection test
Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Record:
- Internet connection: successful or failed
- PlayStation Network sign-in: successful or failed
- NAT type
- Download and upload speeds
- The exact error code

Download speed is not the same as latency, packet loss, or NAT compatibility. A fast connection can still be unsuitable for some multiplayer functions.
3. Apply the low-risk fixes
Restart everything properly
Turn off the PS5 completely rather than relying only on Rest Mode. Then turn off the modem and router, wait at least five minutes, and restart them. PlayStation recommends this interval for several server-connection errors. Run the connection test again after the equipment is back online.
Check Wi-Fi or use Ethernet
For Wi-Fi, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the saved or available network, and re-enter its SSID password if necessary. Move the PS5 closer to the router, remove obstructions, and test both available Wi-Fi bands when the router exposes separate networks.
Connect a LAN cable if possible. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails, the likely cause is signal strength, interference, band steering, mesh placement, or wireless configuration. An Ethernet cable is also the simplest low-cost test before buying networking hardware.

Test another device
Check a phone, computer, or another console on the same network. If several devices cannot reach the internet, focus on the modem, router, or ISP. If only the PS5 fails, continue with the console, account, and connection-specific checks.
4. Use a hotspot to isolate the fault
If practical, connect the PS5 to a phone hotspot temporarily. This is a diagnostic comparison, not necessarily a good permanent multiplayer connection.

- Hotspot works: the home router, ISP, DNS, NAT, or filtering is the likely cause.
- Hotspot also fails: investigate PSN, the account, PS5 software, or a console fault.
Mobile hotspots can use carrier-grade NAT and may have high latency or data limits, so success on a hotspot does not prove it is suitable for regular gaming.
5. Update the PS5 and game
Update the console at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Select the available update if one is shown. Do not rely on a fixed version number: system software changes over time.
Also verify that the affected game is fully installed and updated. Check that any required publisher account is signed in and that the console’s date and time are set automatically where applicable. Reinstalling the game should be a late step, not the first response.
6. Reconfigure the internet connection carefully
Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. For wired networking, connect the LAN cable, choose Set Up Wired LAN, select Connect, and test the connection. For Wi-Fi, select the network, enter its password, and test it.

Menu wording can vary slightly by system-software release, language, and PS5 model. PlayStation supports IPv6, but the PS5 does not support an IPv6-only network. The router must provide IPv4 as well.
7. Treat DNS, MTU, proxy, and IP settings as advanced troubleshooting
In the connection setup, advanced settings may include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, Proxy, and, on supported PS5 Pro configurations, Multi-Link Operation (MLO). PlayStation cautions that users unfamiliar with these settings should consult their ISP or network administrator.
DNS
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. If DNS resolution fails, the PS5 may have internet access but still be unable to find a service. First return DNS to Automatic, reconnect, and test again. A reputable public DNS provider can be tested afterward, but it is not a guaranteed speed or latency improvement and is not required by PlayStation.
MTU
MTU controls the maximum packet size. Leave it on Automatic unless a specific diagnosis points to an MTU problem. If you change it, record the original value and restore it if connectivity worsens. Arbitrary MTU numbers are not a reliable first-line fix.

Leave Proxy set to Do Not Use unless the network administrator requires one. A proxy can interfere with authentication and game traffic.
A static IP can help a port-forwarding rule consistently target the PS5, but it will not repair an outage or poor ISP connection. Incorrect IP, gateway, subnet, or DNS values can disconnect the console entirely. A DHCP reservation configured on the router is usually safer and easier than manually entering network values on the PS5.

On supported PS5 Pro setups, try the connection with MLO enabled and disabled if that option is available. Mesh systems can also benefit from testing the PS5 near the primary router rather than a distant node.
8. Understand NAT, double NAT, and port forwarding
NAT Type 3 can interfere with some multiplayer or peer-to-peer functions, but it is not proof that NAT is the root cause. Two routers in series can create double NAT—for example, an ISP gateway connected to a personal router or mesh system. Cellular and fixed-wireless gateways can also place users behind carrier-grade NAT, which may prevent inbound port forwarding entirely.
Possible remedies include putting the ISP gateway in bridge mode, switching a second router or mesh system to access-point mode, or asking the ISP about its NAT configuration. The correct option depends on the equipment and service.
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance lists these ports:
- TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
- UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
Port forwarding is not a first step. If you use it, forward only to the correct PS5 local IP and do not forward the same ports to multiple consoles without understanding your router’s limitations. UPnP may negotiate NAT automatically, but its security and reliability depend on the router. Do not place the PS5 in a DMZ as a casual substitute for troubleshooting; it exposes the console more broadly and may not solve the underlying problem.

- Incorrect sign-in credentials
- Account or console suspension
- Age or family-control restrictions
- License or entitlement verification failure
- Temporary account-management problems
- A missing PlayStation Plus entitlement
- A game-specific publisher-account problem
Do not buy PlayStation Plus merely because the PS5 cannot connect to PSN. Subscription status matters when PSN sign-in works but multiplayer access is denied. Paid online multiplayer generally requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription, subject to the game and current PlayStation rules; many free-to-play titles are treated differently. Check the specific game rather than assuming.
10. Search the exact error code
Use the exact code on PlayStation’s PS5 error-code database before changing advanced router settings. Prefixes can offer a rough clue—NW or WV often relate to network problems, WS to service or sign-in access, NP to network services or subscriptions, and CE to console software or content—but this is not a universal rule. The individual code page controls.

Special networks can block online services
Dorm, hotel, apartment, school, office, and public Wi-Fi may require browser-based sign-in, isolate devices, or block gaming traffic. Guest networks may prevent peer-to-peer communication. Ask the network administrator rather than attempting to bypass restrictions.
Who should you contact?
Contact your ISP when
- Other devices also lose internet access.
- The modem or router repeatedly drops service.
- The PS5 works on a hotspot but not at home.
- You need bridge mode, port-forwarding help, or a public IPv4 address.
- The gateway’s firmware or settings are inaccessible.
Contact PlayStation Support when
- PSN appears normal but the PS5 cannot sign in after network tests.
- The code indicates suspension, account access, or license verification.
- The PS5 fails across multiple networks, including a hotspot.
- The console cannot update or repeatedly disconnects on a known-good wired network.
Use PlayStation Support and Repairs after the normal troubleshooting path is exhausted.

PSN sign-in and the PS5 internet test succeed, but one game still fails—especially when the publisher reports maintenance or the game uses a separate authentication service.
Before escalating, collect these details
- The exact error code and when it appeared
- NAT type and whether the connection is wired or wireless
- Whether other devices work on the same network
- Whether a hotspot works
- PSN status at the time of the failure
- Router model and ISP
- Recent changes to the router, account, console, or game
Reserve a factory reset for final escalation after backing up data and following official support guidance. It can remove settings and require authentication again; it will not fix a PSN outage, ISP failure, or game-server maintenance.
