When OBS reports “Encoding overloaded,” first check whether the problem is encoding lag, rendering lag, or dropped network frames. The message alone does not identify the cause, and it is not proof that your internet connection is slow or that you need a new GPU. Use OBS Stats and the session log to identify the failing stage, then change one thing at a time and test before relying on the stream for continuous broadcasting.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is losing
Open View > Stats in OBS while the problem is happening. Keep the figures separate: skipped frames due to encoding lag point to the encoding workload; frames missed due to rendering lag point to scene composition or GPU pressure; network-dropped frames point to the connection or delivery path. A single “encoding overloaded” alert is not enough to distinguish these causes.
After the session, inspect the OBS log as well. Record your operating system, OBS version, CPU and GPU, selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene sources and filters, stream destination, and the relevant Stats figures. Those details are needed for a machine-specific diagnosis; without them, no one can identify the root cause reliably.
Reduce scene and rendering workload
OBS must composite and render scenes as well as encode video, so GPU or system bottlenecks can affect its ability to keep up. OBS explains this in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Remove sources and filters that do not contribute to the broadcast, and simplify scene collections where possible.
- Avoid rendering or scaling at a higher resolution than the stream needs. Test changes to base or output resolution rather than lowering them blindly.
- Close only background programs you recognize that are competing for GPU resources.
- On Windows, try launching OBS as administrator. OBS recommends this as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guaranteed fix.
For a cartoon stream, first determine whether the image is a pre-rendered loop, an animated scene, or a live composition. A mostly static cartoon may work at a lower frame rate, but that is a production choice, not a universal repair. Test any resolution or frame-rate reduction privately or in a controlled session before changing a public 24/7 stream.
Choose an encoder based on the overloaded resource
If Stats and the log indicate that CPU-based x264 encoding is the constraint, and your computer has a compatible hardware encoder, compare that option in OBS. Hardware encoding can shift video encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance, while noting that older hardware may trade image quality for lower performance impact; see its Hardware Encoding guidance.

Do not assume a hardware encoder will fix rendering lag: scene composition may already be using the GPU heavily, and encoder behavior varies by hardware. Compare stability and picture quality at your target bitrate under the intended continuous load. Consider an upgrade such as a GPU with an OBS-supported hardware encoder only if the evidence shows CPU encoding is the bottleneck and the replacement is compatible with your computer. The machine’s existing components, power supply, case, cooling, and operating system all matter; no particular GPU model can be recommended from the alert alone.
Set YouTube output and upload capacity separately
Encoder capacity and platform requirements are different questions. If your destination is YouTube Live, use its current live encoder settings and match the recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select. For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended bitrates:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee of quality. The same YouTube page also provides AV1 and H.265 recommendations, so do not apply the H.264 figures to a different codec.
- Use CBR and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS as the stream protocol when configuring a YouTube encoder.
- Run a test with movement and audio, then check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
Your sustained upload capacity must support the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom, accounting for primary and backup streams where applicable. Measure upload rather than download, and test at times representative of actual use; a single speed test does not establish continuous stability. Shared home or office networks can reduce the upload available to OBS. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Prepare the stream for continuous operation
For a YouTube stream intended to run around the clock, prepare and test the workflow before depending on it. YouTube’s live-stream preparation guidance recommends advance setup, preview, failover testing, and continuous monitoring; it does not promise automatic recovery.
- Set up the encoder ahead of the broadcast and preview the feed in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, following YouTube’s instructions. Confirm that the stream behaves as expected.
- Check that the broadcast appears on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Monitor audio and video continuously. If you record a local archive as part of your workflow, verify that the file is being written and is usable.
These steps do not establish that your site needs a UPS, spare PC, or paid monitoring tool. Consider such measures only after identifying a specific continuity risk, such as known power interruptions or a requirement that the stream continue through local equipment failure.

Account for YouTube’s Made for Kids setting
If the stream is on YouTube and is designated Made for Kids, YouTube says live chat and chat replay are disabled, and personalized ads are disabled on live streams (contextual ads may still appear). The channel owner must set the audience designation appropriately; describing a stream as a kids’ cartoon is not, by itself, enough to determine its classification. See YouTube’s guidance about Made for Kids content.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | Encoding workload or a system bottleneck | Review the encoder and system load; simplify output demands or test a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the constraint. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag | Scene composition or GPU pressure | Simplify scenes and filters, reduce unnecessary scaling, and check recognized GPU-heavy applications. |
| Network-dropped frames | Upload capacity, network sharing, or delivery path | Check sustained upload and stream health; preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom rather than replacing the encoder without evidence. |
| Overload continues after one setting change | The change may not address the failing stage, or more than one bottleneck may exist | Recheck Stats and the log, revert changes that worsen the picture, and test one variable at a time. |
