To shrink a wedding video for a YouTube playlist, lower the video bitrate in your export settings while keeping the audio track at a suitable quality, then listen to the exported file before uploading. YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, and the same frame rate as the original. Its upload guidance recommends 48 kHz audio and 384 kbps for stereo. These are recommendations, not a promise that a compressed copy will be indistinguishable from the original. A YouTube playlist of uploaded videos does not require a live encoder.
Choose upload settings for the wedding video
Video and audio are separate export settings. Reducing video bitrate is usually the direct way to reduce file size; it does not require you to reduce audio bitrate. YouTube explicitly says audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution in its recommended upload encoding settings.
Use a compatible video format
- Container: MP4.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Scan: progressive.
- Frame rate: match the recording rather than changing it solely to reduce file size.
- Bitrate mode: variable bitrate (VBR), where available.
YouTube’s SDR bitrate figures below are reference recommendations for uploads, not mandatory minimums or quality guarantees. Select the row that matches the exported resolution and frame rate. Wedding footage with fast movement, detailed décor, confetti, or busy dance-floor scenes may need more bitrate than a static shot to retain detail.
| Resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current, undated SDR upload recommendations, retrieved in 2026 from its encoding settings guidance. If you need a smaller file, test a short representative export at a lower video bitrate and inspect fine detail, motion, and transitions before applying that setting to the full film. There is no single lower bitrate that is right for every source.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep audio settings independent
- Use an audio format YouTube recommends for uploads: AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, at a 48 kHz sample rate.
- For stereo audio uploads, YouTube recommends 384 kbps. Preserve the source audio track where your editor allows it, and avoid repeatedly exporting a lossy track to another lossy format.
- Do not lower audio bitrate just because you lower video resolution or bitrate. The video and audio settings affect different streams.
YouTube’s separate upload troubleshooting guidance suggests checking AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and a 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate when diagnosing audio problems. That is troubleshooting advice, not the same context as the upload page’s 384 kbps stereo recommendation; use it as a diagnostic checklist rather than treating the two figures as one rule.
Check the audio mix before uploading
Wedding films may combine a camera microphone, a ceremony recording, a DJ or venue feed, and separately recorded vows. Listen to the exported file with headphones, especially speech, music, and transitions. Check that dialogue is clear and that music does not overwhelm vows or speeches.

YouTube warns that poor mono compatibility can reduce audio quality or mute audio during mono conversion. Its troubleshooting page notes this can happen when several audio recordings are used and advises checking that the audio is in phase. If the mix sounds thin or disappears when summed to mono, ask your editor or audio engineer to check phase and routing before upload; it is not a problem that applies to every wedding video.
YouTube’s music-video encoding specifications say lossless audio is preferable to re-compressing lossy audio for YouTube Content ID music-video partner delivery. That guidance is written for that partner-delivery context, not as a general requirement for ordinary wedding uploads.

Export, upload, and add the video to a playlist
- Export a short sample first. Include representative speech, music, movement, and a transition. Use the target resolution and frame rate, then review picture detail and listen through the sample.
- Adjust video bitrate if needed. If the file is too large, lower video bitrate in a small step and export another sample. Keep audio settings separate; do not trade away audio quality automatically to meet a video file-size target.
- Export the full film and check the file. Confirm playback, picture, audio sync, and stereo/mono behavior before uploading. Keep the original export as a fallback if you need to revise the compressed copy.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s computer upload steps. During upload, choose an existing playlist or create one in the upload flow; YouTube supports linking uploaded videos, Shorts, and Live content to playlists.
- Wait for processing before judging the final version. Higher resolutions can take several hours to process, according to YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. Check the processed video and its audio before sharing it.
If you are unsure how a setting will look after YouTube processing, YouTube’s formatting specifications recommend testing with an upload. The result can vary with source quality and export settings.
If you mean an actual live wedding broadcast
A playlist of uploaded wedding films and a live broadcast are different workflows. For a live ceremony, the encoder sends a continuous stream to YouTube; use YouTube’s separate live encoder settings, not the upload bitrate table above.

- Match stream quality to stable available upload bandwidth; YouTube recommends a speed test and a representative test stream.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, without exceeding four seconds.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, with AAC or MP3 audio and up to 60 fps.
- For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps ingestion bitrate for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are live ingestion recommendations, not file upload settings.
- In the Live context, YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo audio or 384 kbps for 5.1 surround audio.
Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the ceremony and monitor stream health. YouTube specifically recommends a test that includes representative audio and video movement; a static test screen alone will not expose every issue.
