Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can use systemd to keep a long-running encoder process running and restart it after certain failures. That is only one part of a 24/7 YouTube stream: first validate the encoder and source, then verify the actual moving video and audio in YouTube Live Control Room. A service showing active does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
This guide covers the deployment pattern for Ubuntu, not a tested, copy-and-paste FFmpeg command. The correct encoder command and unit details depend on the source, installed FFmpeg build, Ubuntu release and systemd version. Check the documentation installed on your server before relying on version-sensitive options.
Choose the source and streaming path
Decide what the encoder will send before creating a service. A video file played in a loop, a camera, a desktop capture and an incoming relay have different input and recovery requirements; systemd manages a process, not the media pipeline.
- Prerecorded file or relay: FFmpeg may suit a deterministic, headless process. Plan what should happen if the file ends, the relay disappears or the input changes.
- Camera or desktop capture: confirm the capture device or display session is available to the service account at startup and after reboot. OBS on Linux requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland; meeting its baseline requirements does not guarantee adequate encoding performance. See the OBS Project’s System Requirements.
The steps below assume you already have an encoder invocation that works when run manually under the same user and with the same source access the service will have. They do not prescribe a universal FFmpeg command.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the broadcast
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements say the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current eligibility rules before configuring the server: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and configure its title, visibility and other broadcast details.
- Open the stream settings for the broadcast and obtain its stream key and ingest URL. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with no more than four seconds. Its guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for the documented protocols, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the supported combination for your encoder and stream in the current YouTube encoder settings and protocol guidance.
- Match the bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm the server’s sustained upload capacity has headroom. YouTube’s current H.264 table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 1080p at 60 fps it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. Those are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain them.
- For stereo audio, follow YouTube’s current audio guidance, including its AAC or MP3 and 44.1 kHz recommendations. Use the current table for exact bitrate recommendations rather than a stale preset.
Test with representative movement and sound. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A static test image or silent input can conceal problems that only appear with real content.

Validate the encoder before systemd
Run the encoder manually as the intended service account, using the chosen source, codec, protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. Confirm the input remains available and the encoder does not exit when a file reaches its end or a relay briefly drops. Do not assume that systemd can fix a command that exits normally at end-of-file or cannot access its source.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported by the chosen encoder and YouTube ingest settings.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, ensuring the interval does not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s current codec- and resolution-specific table and test against the actual uplink.
- Check audio is present and configured for the intended channel layout and sample rate.
- Confirm the command works after a reboot-like environment change: no interactive shell state, unavailable mounted media, user-only files or GUI session should be required unless deliberately provided.
Once the manual process produces a healthy stream in YouTube Live Control Room, use that validated invocation as the service’s ExecStart. No single FFmpeg command is suitable for every source, and the examples here are not an end-to-end tested FFmpeg recipe.

Create a dedicated account and service
Run the encoder as an unprivileged service account rather than root. Give it only the read access it needs for media and configuration, and write access only to directories it must use for temporary files or logs. Use absolute paths so the service does not depend on a shell’s current directory or a user’s interactive environment.
- Create a dedicated account using the Ubuntu account-management tools appropriate to your release. Do not grant it an interactive login unless you need one for administration.
- Place the validated command in an executable wrapper or write it directly in the unit. If using a wrapper, set explicit input, output and working paths, and make it readable and executable only as intended.
- Create a system unit under
/etc/systemd/system/, for example/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. SetUser=andGroup=to the dedicated account, use an explicitWorkingDirectory=if needed, and makeExecStart=invoke the encoder directly or the wrapper by absolute path. - Add
Restart=on-failureand a sensibleRestartSec=delay for a process expected to run continuously. This policy restarts certain unclean exits; it does not restart a process that exits successfully, nor does it detect a frozen picture or silent audio. - Validate the unit against the installed systemd version and inspect its local manual before enabling it. Directive availability and credential features vary by release. Upstream’s moving
systemd.execdocumentation is available at freedesktop.org.
Keep the stream key out of the unit
Do not put a real key in a world-readable unit file, shell history, screenshots or routine logs. The systemd manual warns that environment variables are not suitable for passing secrets to service processes. On a systemd release that supports credential directives, consider a systemd credential mechanism and verify the exact syntax and permissions against that release’s manual.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If credentials are unavailable, use a deliberately secured alternative, such as a separate file owned by root with restrictive permissions and a narrowly scoped method for the service to read it. Check how the encoder receives the key: placing it in a command-line URL can expose it through process inspection or diagnostic output. Avoid logging the expanded URL, and test the chosen method as the service account before deployment.
Enable the unit and verify the live stream
- After saving the unit, tell systemd to reload its definitions with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it now with
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. - Inspect the service with
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceand its recent logs withjournalctl -u youtube-stream.service. Check timestamps and exit messages; do not print or paste secrets while diagnosing. - Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the stream is received and that the preview shows moving video with audible, correctly routed audio. Review the stream-health indicators and messages.
- Keep both service state and YouTube health under observation. systemd can report a running process while the input is frozen, audio is absent, the network path is broken or YouTube is not accepting a usable stream.
Test recovery rather than assuming it
Before depending on the setup, test the failure cases safely with a non-public or scheduled test broadcast where possible. Confirm recovery at both layers: the process manager and YouTube’s ingest/preview state.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Process failure: stop the encoder process in a controlled test and verify that the unit restarts it after the configured delay. Confirm a new healthy preview appears.
- Network interruption: briefly interrupt connectivity in a controlled window, restore it, and observe whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube resumes receiving the stream. A systemd restart policy alone does not guarantee this behavior.
- Repeated failures: systemd limits repeated starts. Inspect the installed systemd documentation for the configured start-rate limit and recovery procedure; repeated bad credentials or a missing source can exhaust the limit until the underlying issue is fixed and the unit is reset or restarted.
- Source exhaustion: decide what should happen when a file ends, a camera disappears or a relay stops. Handle that in the media pipeline or a deliberate wrapper/monitoring design; a successful process exit is not covered by
Restart=on-failure.
For longer-term monitoring, check more than whether the unit is active: verify incoming stream health, moving video, audio, and whether the source is still progressing. A process-level watchdog cannot establish that viewers receive valid content unless it has a meaningful way to test those conditions.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unit fails immediately | Invalid executable path, permissions, missing input, or a command that depends on interactive shell state | Read systemctl status and journalctl -u youtube-stream.service; run the same command as the service user with absolute paths. |
| Unit is active but YouTube has no healthy preview | Process is alive while ingest is rejected, the network path is broken, or media output is invalid | Check YouTube Live Control Room messages and health, the ingest URL/protocol, encoder output and connectivity. |
| Video appears frozen or audio is missing | Source stalled, capture device unavailable, or audio/video configuration mismatch | Inspect the actual preview and source progression; test representative motion and sound, not just process status. |
| Repeated restarts stop | systemd start-rate limiting, persistent source failure or invalid credentials | Fix the underlying error, inspect the installed systemd rate-limit settings, then reset/restart the unit as appropriate for that release. |
| Service cannot read the stream key | Credential directive unsupported or file permissions/ownership do not match the service account | Check the installed systemd credential documentation and file access without exposing the key in logs or command output. |
| Service restarts but the stream does not recover | Encoder reconnect behavior, YouTube broadcast state or source/network state requires more than a process restart | Observe YouTube’s stream health after restart; design additional source/network handling if the process alone cannot restore a valid feed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video or playlist that stays live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an Ubuntu host and systemd unit. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
